The Safe Deposit Center

Caveat: I have decided not to do business with this company, so I’m not speaking as a customer. I’m speaking as a would-​be customer who did some digging into this business and found enough red flags to keep me away. I believe those flags should be readily available to other prospective customers — hence, this review.
In the wake of the ²⁴⁄₇ Private Vaults fiasco in Las Vegas (this is worth googling if you’re a safe-​deposit customer unfamiliar with the case), it’s obviously important to examine the integrity of non-​bank safe-​deposit facilities before entrusting one’s valuables to their care. Those of us suspicious of the banking system have, unfortunately, few options for this kind of storage. The Safe Deposit Center seems to have a reasonable reputation and good history. I’ve found no evidence — in my little bit of online digging — that the firm has experienced any robberies at all or in any way failed to live up to its representations to clients.
The firm claims to have operated continually since 1992. It’s true that its history extends back that far, but it has only been in business a few years under current ownership. (The company was previously known as National Security Centres [sic], in case you’d like to delve into all this.) The detail that concerns me is that one of the owners, Stanley Xu, is a convicted criminal. Xu was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2014 for violations of the Clean Air Act. He’s also involved in a real estate company (Longwell Company, which shares an address with the Safe Deposit Center), that, under his control, knowingly exposed residents of an apartment building to asbestos contamination. ) This illegal activity exposed human lives to potentially fatal dangers. For me, it’s a slam dunk not to trust the integrity of a person who would do something like that or of any company in which that person is involved. For this reason I won’t do business with Safe Deposit Centers and would implore other prospective customers to research these matters.
