I went to see Dr. Helen Chiao (she was Dr. Helen Youm at the time) at Washington Endodontics for a root canal last year on emergency basis after a deep filling at my dentist’s office that morning. My dentist warned me that because it was such a deep filling it might have gone into the nerve and would need a root canal but it might take a little time to tell. Well, not even an hour later I knew I would need one! The anesthetic from the filling wore off and I had this incredible shooting pain all along my jaw. Dr. Chiao agreed to see me right away, even though it would most likely cut into her lunch hour, because I was in so much pain.
I have never looked forward to a dental appointment more! After she gave me the anesthesia, I felt this huge sense of relief. I was able to relax for the first time in hours, as she and her assistant went to work. I put in my headphones and zoned out for most of the time, only being interrupted once when they needed to take an x-​ray. Towards the end, I even started to doze off! I never thought I would be saying that about having a root canal.
The whole experience was great, I was even able to go right back to work after the procedure despite having been in so much pain just a few hours before. It was mildly sore for a few days, which she had warned me about and said was completely normal for my situation, but after that I have had no problem whatsoever. I recently had my complimentary one-​year follow up with Dr. Chiao and she informed me that everything had healed properly. I really appreciate her thoroughness in explaining the procedure and what to expect, as well as the follow-​up to make sure everything is as it should be.

Wow, Dr Youm is a great endodontist. I wish she could do all my dental work. But when it comes to complicated root canals– as she did for me– i highly recommend her. My dentist suggested Dr Youm based on the treatment needed and my dental anxiety.
Her staff are kind and professional. Dr Youm made sure I was prepared in all ways possible so she could get the work done. It took two appointments and I was fine coming back for round 2 without any fear.

Dr. Helen Youm is wonderful. She is extremely thorough yet gentle. I have gone to see her a couple times for root canals, and both have been nothing less than exceptional. Dr. Youm and her staff are courteous and caring – she always calls afterwards to check up on you, and also provides her personal number in case of any emergencies. I wish all my doctors were as knowledgeable, caring, and kind as Dr. Youm. She is prompt with aftercare including contacting your dentist, and sending you a letter (documenting the procedure (s) performed along with xrays of your teeth).

Dr. Helen Youm is a REALLY GOOD endodontist. I needed my third root canal. Frankly, I only picked her because she seemed super highly credentialed and she was on my insurance plan. And, i got an appointment right away. I have no anxiety about my dentist visits despite highly complicated root canals in the past. However, I knew that I needed someone good because I did not want to spend 7 hours in a dentist chair again. Dr. Youm knows how to give anesthesia. She gives you enough without making you feel like your face has stroked out. Also, she is gentle. I know this because it is 7 hours after I have left her office and though she warned me my mouth would be sore, I don’t feel ike someone punched me in the face, which is how it felt after each of my past 2 root canals. She really understands teeth. I kind of don’t want to share her with other people. But, I know that there are people out there who are in dire need of a good root canal surgeon. She is smart. She is professional and thorough. Her office is tiny, but very up to date, neat and meticulously laid out.
I highly recommend this office for anyone in need of a root canal. Good luck!
