Maplegate Country Club

Overall poor condition. Greens are nice but everything else is in pretty bad condition. Range is a joke; it’s like hitting on concrete. Club house is a trailer with hotdogs.

I was looking for a course that was challenging, but not impossible. I got that and at a very reasonable price. Nice to have a driving range too. Target golf on some holes is a good challenge. Forces you to play smart. You’ll need your driver as well. Maplegate is just what I was looking for and with a nice crew at the club house as well.

Played this course for the first time this weekend. Great layout and you need to be able to manage your way around the course well.
Cons:
The greens were too long and ran slow. It took 5 ½ hours for a round which is way too long. If you decide to play here bring plenty of food and camping gear because it’s going to be a while to finish. Had an issue with a member there who thought my friends and I took his range finder that he lost on one of the holes (we were playing behind him). They then let us play through but would purposely catch up to look in our carts. They drove by three times asking if we had seen it and two of my buddies didn’t even know what a range finder was. We had told them multiple times we hadn’t seen it and asked where they thought they left it but they weren’t sure. After finishing we were then met by clubhouse staff and asked to search our bags and cart. We were told this is because he was a member and threatened to call the police. We all left feeling like we had been singled out for no reason. Most likely not coming back to this place. Thanks for making this an uncomfortable experience and allowing members to treat the paying public with such little disregard.

All around a good experiance, had a minor issue with a trio behind us being rude and pushing me and my group to drive into the fairway while people were trying to play the hole, addressed it with the guy at the counter and he handled the situation very well, had a stern talking to them and comped us, I’m looking forward to playing here again on hopefully a better day.

This place is improving again. It still needs some work, but it is a nice track and they are working on it. You can play pretty fast here most of the time too, usually moves at a good pace. Greens are a bit slow, but getting better. I find the people/​staff to be pretty friendly here too!

Played the back nine here this afternoon and can honestly say it was one of the best layouts I have played in a long time. Greens rolled true and we enjoyed a beautiful day on the golf course. I expect the course conditions will improve as the season continues due to late snow and fallen branches, but the course was in good shape all around. Friendly staff in the proshop as well, I’ll be back!

Mike S. Nailed it. My friends and I played here 4 – 5 time over the last 2 years primarily due to some cheap pricing on golf web sites and the hope that the course conditions would improve — no such luck. Firstly the course design isn’t bad with a mix of straightforward and challenging holes, it has potential. The issue is the condition — the course maintenance gives the impression that it is a day or two from bankruptcy. The fact that a clubhouse was never built and the temporary shack is deteriorating adds to the impression. Don’t use the driving range unless you don’t mind hitting off concrete. Hopefully someone with some cash and a lawnmower will buy the place and make it playable.

Easily the worst golf course in eastern Massachusetts. As someone who never writes a review, I feel compelled to tell people so that they can learn from my mistake. The greens are a joke (they must use the same mower setting for the greens that they do for the first cut of rough). The driving range has mats and balls from the ’60’s, and if that isn’t enough, every time you play, there is invariably someone soliciting from one charity or another on the third tee box. How about ‘Let’s raise some money so we can hire a grounds crew’? Trust me when I tell you, that you’re better off going to a range, or even playing tennis before you play at this dump. Just shameful the way the place is run, and it’s been this way for years. Until they get some type of new management, do yourself a favor and stay away…

Not a course for walkers. This is another local course that uses the «pace of play» excuse to nickel and dime patrons into paying for a cart when they’d prefer to be walking (and would play far more quickly if they could walk directly to their shots).
It may be fine for beginners or weekend golfers, but the upkeep and overall condition of the course falls far short of acceptable for seasoned players who play the ball down and expect better.
I would not recommend this place when there are plenty of better alternatives nearby.

Played here a few years ago and was not impressed.
I was invited to play with a client and was disappointed to
hear it was at Maplegate. By the 3^rd hole I was pleasantly surprised.
The fairways were in good shape, greens were nice, but a little slow.
Over all great lay out and much better maintained than I remember.
I’ve been playing here twice a week with my son and recommend it to
all my friends. If you have not been in a while give it try. You won’t be disappointed.

A nice mature course and overall layout for the price paid. This course just needs better irrigation all around and special treatment of tee boxes. Clubhouse is a double trailer but had a decent washroom and snack bar so I’m not lowering my rating because of it. I view this place a having the potential to be a four star but this is currently not being realized with the dry and hard condition of the course, including the greens.

Played 9 today… and for 25+cart was happy with the choice. The course offers risk/​reward and an opportunity to hit a lot of different shots. My four year old and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will give the course another shot down the road.

I play golf a lot in Boston area and played here today because of groupon and it is a great track but the shape it’s in is horrible! The tees are like hitting off dirt and greens are like putting off a fairway! Plus we had about 5 groups in front of us they don’t know how to play
was a 5 hour round and It wasn’t worth the 38 $ I payed! I shot a 79 with an 8.5 handicap but wouldn’t recommend this course to anybody that is passionate about the game. It has potential but needs SERIOUS maintenance.

This course gets 3 stars for value and potential.
First, as someone else put it, this is a working man’s course. There are few, cushy amenities at Maplegate. However, if you play at a discounted rate, it is a good value.
Here is a description:
Clubhouse — a converted trailerhouse with a wraparound deck. Is it beautiful? No. Is it functional — yes! I liked the deck overlooking the 18^th hole. A good place to have a post round beer or three. The parking lot is dirt/​gravel, which wasn’t all that great. I’m not into frilly aspects of golfing, but a paved lot should be a priority.
Staff — really friendly, all around and without exception. Perhaps, the best part of the experience. Whomever owns the place should make sure they stay there!
Range — yes, there is one. The mats are extremely worn and so are the balls. Many had little cover left and were warped. However, the range is well marked with many stalls.
Practice green — two-​tiered and in good shape, save for the long cut.
Course — The layout is probably the best feature of the course, short of the pars 3, which have little imagination. Plenty of dog lefts and rights. The course is well watered. There is plenty of inclination to the layout, which is well used in the format. However, the distance marking could be addressed better. The rough isn’t overly punitive.
Greens — The greens are the biggest disappointment. Long cut, well watered, bent grass made for some slow, uninteresting greens. For challenge, most of their shapes were cut so they were shallow. There is little grading in the greens, so once on, the putts were slow, straight shots right at the holes. The holes weren’t freshly cut and all had round, ragged edges. Hole placement was uninteresting, as well.
Overall, I would play there again! It’s not a dump, as some have claimed. In addition, with some improvements made to the greens to enhance challenge, this would be one of the better playing courses in the area.

I played here yesterday morning on a discounted rate of $ 39 for 18 and a cart. For that price, it’s a steal! The tee boxes are still a little rough and there are some burnt out spots in the fairways, but the greens were in good shape. I saw several workers throughout my round tending to various spots on the course. The effort to bring the course back to the level it was at a few years ago is very evident!

I played here on May 12^th. The course was in fine condition for this time of year with many maintenance workers swarming all over the course.
The greens were being rolled and are growing in with the recent warmth. There are a few greens with brown spots, but the course is recovering from what the pro shop said was a «crane fly» infestation that attacked the greens and fairways in 2013. The fairways are green and lush, except as noted above. The tee boxes need work, most especially the women’s boxes that are a little bit bare or unkept… I suppose the staff has a plan to get greens and fairways in order before working on the tee areas.
You need to think your way around this course. There is plenty of holes to use a driver and others where it’s best to use less club. There are lots of wetlands and ponds throughout the course that are best avoided.
I went into the pro shop and to say the course was fun. I was greeted by friendly smiles and «thank you’s». It looks like there are a few reviews here that deliberately want to sandbag the course. I’m not sure of the reasons, but comments such as «worst ever» are a damn joke. Having a crappy round is no reason to slam the golf course! I look forward to going back soon.

Yikes… Greens, tee boxes, and fairways all in terrible shape. Thankfully, I play in the rough a lot, so it wasn’t a total waste of a day… as for the fees… well, they got me this one time.

It’s a dump! Worst maintained golf course I’ve played in years! Play elsewhere; anywhere. Ponkapoag is probably in better shape.
This place has gone downhill fast. The layout has great potential, but the maintenance has been poor for the last few years and the course is in terrible shape. With so many options, play anywhere but here.

I would echo the comments of other reviewers. The layout is ok, probably a better back nine than front. I particularly disliked the short, silly par 4 second hole, and the par 5 fourth hole, which has a very dense, brush laden brook that obscures a look at the green or fairway on the second shot.
My biggest issue and the principle reason I gave this course two stars is the greens. They were the *worst* greens I have played on in several years. They were pockmarked, uncut disasters. I play quite frequently at many other courses and I can unequivocably say that these greens were relatively terrible. The problem to me isn’t the poa, it was the lack of maintenance.
On the plus side, I thought the pro was a nice guy and the tees/​fairways were in three star condition. I paid 39 bucks with a cart, which wasn’t too bad.

Please do not waste your time! I am playing in the US Pub Linx qualifier here in 2 weeks and played today to refresh my memory about the course. It is as bad as ever. They just aerated the greens this week and the once Bent grass greens are now covered in Poa. Played 10 years ago or so and was impressed, played 2 years ago and could not believe how it had fallen off. Nothing has changed since then. I don’t know how they duped the USGA into playing a tournament here. The other qualifying players are going to have a rude awakening. I wouldn’t pay $ 5 with cart to play here if I had the choice.
The owner has ruined this place and the superintendent should be embarrassed!!!
