There are better options for sushi. Don’t bother with this place. Bad service and average sushi. Completely messed up a take out order… I have a allergy so I was not able to eat it.

My recent lunch experience was not good and I’m taking this restaurant OFF my dining options list. First problem was a language barrier(lack of English understanding) with the two servers/hosts. My order was taken and served incorrectly and my guests request was not understood as she was served what she asked to now be served. Request for no seaweed and only tofu in miso soup was ignored or misunderstood. I asked for a two item bento box and changed my selection from nigiri to sashimi. I was given three item meal with nigiri and sashimi. I was trying to avoid rice. I was also billed for this. Here’s the yucky part. My guest had chicken teriyaki and asked for no salad and a second serving of rice. This was not understood. No extra rice. OK. Nothing yucky about that, but, wait for it, the very large serving of chicken teriyaki was a horrible consistency. We wondered if it was undercooked. It did not look undercooked as we picked a piece apart to get a closer look. It was mushy and a really unappealing texture, almost like not«real» chicken meat. It was not edible. NOTGOINGBACK. I shudder at the awfulness that this lunch experience was. Sushi from Safeway or Lunardis is better.

This place is solid. Hubby and I both got the dinner bento– miso chicken, miso Salmon and sashimi — all excellent/he got the tonkatsu, teriyaki chicken and cal roll– less exciting but good:) Staff were really nice and prompt And I love the sliced oranges at the end– a lovely and refreshing touch! We’d come back for sure

I took a take out order for 3 things. Despite charging me for miso soup $ 2.20(which most places give out for free), they did not include it in my order. Maybe more attention should be given to customers in a restaurant full of empty tables. I was the only customer and they still weren’t able to get my order right.

I like the convenient of it being so close to my work. I can get most item here with no complaint in taste or price. But I have to say that it is not by a Japanese cook. I think they are all Chinese. It does not change the flavor of the food but it does change the fact that you can see the quality of how they prepare it. The way the sashimi is cut is not as well as the Japanese chief would have knowledge of. The flavor of the sushi rice also not as good. Most real Japanese chief will use a bit more vinegar in their rice. It’s still good but not as good as others. You wonder what is up with 4 stars. I don’t think they are bad and the service is what got the high marks. I am all about politeness and common curtesy. So this place is better… like way better than most Japanese restaurant with Chinese chief.

I just came here for the first time — a place in walking distance from me. I got two things. Results: * Tonkatsu Donburi — Amazing! Lots of sauce, lots of onions. Delicious * Salmon Nigiri — Not as great. Not bad, but not flavorful. I think the main problem was something wasn’t great about the sushi rice. Along with those two orders came salad and miso. I liked the miso more than usual, and the salad was good too. Service was ok — they ran out when I forgot my jacket, so I can’t complain about that. So I won’t be coming here for fish, but I’ll be returning for the cooked items!

Have never not ordered sushi anywhere but this is my first time getting sushi outside of my favorite all you can eat spot in West Haven, CT so it was difficult adjusting to the astronomical prices when you actually are charged for every little thing i’d like to eat! I went with the grilled mackerel and was really pleasantly surprised! 2 large filets and a half and a bowl of rice that didn’t amaze until I juiced the lemon over it — really nice. Also came with soup and salad — a tuna roll on top and I’m full and spent no more than $ 20 — A successful dining out experience. My gf’s Seafood Udon soup was also quite delicious and considerable in quantity.

This place change hands after Narita probably a few times, every since than going down to hill. Thats so bad that this part of Belmont has not a good sushi restaurant. Down there Sushi Monster is the best just a little far but for sure best in Belmont. Sushi Kuu, nothing special, rude staff, pricey, not tasty, so waste of money. I just wish that we have a better sushi place that suits better upper part of Belmont area, good luck,

Great food at a reasonable price. I don’t usually order Bento Boxes at Japanese restaurants, but I do here. At lunch, the 3 item Bento is $ 11.95(2 item is $ 9.95). The beef short ribs are delicious. The mixed tempura is plentiful and tasty. The grilled calamari is yummy.

After a few more visit since my Unilocal review, I realize I have to downgrade a lot. I liked the sashimi omakase my first time there but somehow have not been impressed during subsequent visits. Also, the last time I came(to have dinner right before visiting my favorite Thai massage place a block away), I ordered the regular sashimi combo and found it unimpressive also. It’s more like 2+ stars for the sashimi(I haven’t tried ordering cooked food here), but I give another half star for the nice, pleasant service I feel I always get from the regular staff here(especially like the younger of the two ladies that are regular staff here during evenings). I may have to downgrade, but nevertheless to the restaurant’s defense I feel the criticism in the typical narrow-minded review from Nobu K. that was posted today(he’s notorious for these and surely must hold record for most-flagged-and-removed Unilocal reviews) was unwarranted.

We came to this restaurant 8 years ago and had not been back since because our experience was so bad. Tonight we decided to give it another chance, thinking after 8 years, some things may have improved. Sadly, tonight’s performance was just as bad if not worse. The service was poor from the moment we walked through the front door when right behind us another customer pushed her way through to get her order picked up. We were not sure if we were suppose to wait to be seated or seat ourselves. Noone said hello, we just stood there in that big open room with almost all the tables empty but two. Finally someone asked us very awkward if we were there to pick up, we responded with a no, «dinner for two» please. We were rushed over to a table right in the middle of the restaurant sandwhiched between the ontly other two tables being occupied. My boyfriend is tall and could barely fit in the chair since there was no room to move backwards. We waited for someone to come help us, and waited and waited and when we finally saw someone come our way, he was quickly given orders to go clean another table before waiting on us… only chinese being spoken at a Japanese restaurant? ok. Someone took our order and finally we were on our way to what we hoped would be a redeeming dinner. While waiting for our food, a few more guests began to stroll in. Unfortunately among them was a family with some very loud and what to us seemed like rude kids. The parents just did not seem to have any self awarenes of the kids being extremely loud, people were being polite around them and trying to make seem as if the kids were cute, but the honest truth is they were not cute, they were spoiled, loud and rude. Then while trying to settle into our dinner and trying to have a conversation, the waitress begins to reset the tables and drags every chair she can possibly find. You know the sound, the screeching of wood agains a floor is almost like nails on a chalk board… so rude! Lastly the food, The soup was to salty, the fish was over cooked and the portions served seperately in those awkward dishes made no sense. The vegetable tempura and the beer was good. The room is set up very poorly, maybe it is so loud in there because it is just a big open room. I am not sure what it is about this restaurant but we don’t feel welcomed. The kids started whailing and screaming and we quickly asked for the check and got the heck out of there. WEWILLNEVERGOBACK! We usually go to our favorite sushi restaurants in San Carlos on Laurel Avenue, where we always feel welcomed and experience a fantastic customer service and delicious food. We wanted to give our local restaurant one more chance, now we have and we don’t have to go there again.

Much better spots in the area First impression: walk in and there’s no AC. On my visit temp inside was warm and that’s not a good feeling for sushi where the fish also seemed warm. Menu had the typical offerings for Japanese. I ordered some sushi, a few rolls. Was expensive for the area. Spent $ 50 without trying. Yet was charged for a miso soup! Come on that’s rich Sushi was ok except for the uni that was not good and possibly spoiled. I suffered the Gi results as proof of that. Surprising as I’ve been eating sushi 20 years and I know the difference. This is the first time I’ve experienced bad uni. Too expensive. Not great quality. Sushi Monster a mile away vastly superior.

I have been here a few times. My last visit was a huge disappointment. Unlikely to come back. It was a weekend dinner. Understandably, it was crowded. Took us 15 minutes to sit down. No problem. A football game was shown on the TV. We ordered our food before the half time break. Guess what, well into the 3rd quarter, my whole family was still waiting for food. Meanwhile, everyone who was there for take-out got food right away. Apparently this is their business model. Once you sit down, they don’t care about you any more. Obviously, our dinner experience was spoiled. Two stars would be generous.

Stopped in for lunch a couple of weeks ago — complete waste of time and money. I ordered the Lunch Bento(2 items for $ 9.95, 3 items for $ 11.95), and was told I couldn’t choose sashimi twice(doesn’t say that anywhere on the menu), so I paid the extra $ 1.50. The waitress couldn’t tell me which type of sashimi I would get, even though there were only two other diners in the place, and the chef was standing five feet away from us(maybe ask?). Soon after my food arrived, the chef and the waitress disappeared. The cook was slurping something in the dining room with the two paying customers. No water refills. No tea refills(heck, no sweetener for my tea…). The rice was dry. The sashimi was minuscule, and the waitress was less attentive than a DMV clerk. I wouldn’t give Shiki five stars either, but it’s WAY better than this place, and worth the extra five minute drive.

OMG! This place is straight out bad! I came here years and years ago and it was pretty decent but something terrible has happened since then. Change of ownership perhaps? Why are all the staff speaking Chinese?! Ugly, out of proportion, overly saucy, unbalanced, ham handed… these are not the words one thinks when one thinks of Japanese food. And dirty! I literally watched the cockroaches running around between the glass at the end of the sushi cabinet and the fake wood cabinet that it was built into… really! As if that weren’t enough, the service was pushy, clumsy, and awkward. Every one of my senses was grossly offended by this place!

Full disclosure, I’m a vegetarian with an egg allergy. Beyond that, Sushi Kuu seems to be pretty standard, and perhaps has a little less to offer a vegetarian than the standard sushi joint, although they do have a vegetarian Green Combo on the menu.(The«vegetable roll» they list is literally avocado and cucumber, just FYI.) Fellow food allergy sufferers beware, they don’t list all of their rolls’ ingredients on the menu. I was kind of suspicious to see a futo maki that didn’t have eggs in it(it always does to my recollection), but it spelled pretty much everything else out on the menu except for the eggs, so I thought maybe it was my lucky day – nope :/Thankfully, when it arrived and I told the waitress, they took it back and brought out another futo maki made without the egg, so they were pretty gracious about it, but I figure I should warn anyone who thinks maybe that’s a vegan roll based on the description that it isn’t. The sushi itself is just okay. I feel like the rice isn’t quite right compared to other sushi places(maybe on the dry side), but otherwise everything looked fine. They had cooked options for the person in our group that didn’t eat raw fish, and had plenty of selection for the rest. Service was fine, but the place was practically empty at 7pm on a Friday night, so when they accidentally brought my friend the wrong roll, it was odd that it took so long to get the right roll to her. Also, the table was oddly sticky on the pull-out leaf(we had a group of 5, so they pulled the leaves of the table up to make it round rather than square). All in all, not bad, but not great, either. I’m not opposed to returning, but I may opt to try another sushi place over this one in the future.

Always a solid performance. This is our go to sushi place and while you can find better sushi places on the peninsula, it’s hard to beat the quality and convenience of this well-managed spot in Carlmont Plaza. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, the fish is always fresh, and the prices are fairly reasonable. If you’re feeling adventurous try the Omakase for gorgeous presentation and some seafood you might not usually try. Be prepared for the sweet shrimp. I’d probably rate 3.5 if it was an option for being slightly pricey and for some hit or miss experiences with the non-sushi menu items, but all in all this is a great place that won’t disappoint.

Sushi Rolls — 2 stars Sashimi — 3 stars Cooked food — 3.5 stars Ambiance — 4 stars Service — 3 stars I really wanted to love this place as its so close to our home. Unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. While the servers are friendly, since they double up as the cleaning staff they often forget about providing all the proper plates, utensils, etc. While the rolls and sashimi portions were large, there was no care in making them. They were falling apart and in some cases not cut well enough and sticking next to one another. The grilled chicken wings were my favorite item as they were dry grilled and crispy. Would I come back? Probably not considering how many good Japanese restaurants there are in the area. Hope they read this review and step up their game.

Frequented Kuu over the years, but the last two lunch time experiences were very disappointing. With a business associate his order was not as requested, Hey, what’s the big deal about leaving out the rice and just doing a requested seaweed wrap? But it was the smug attitude of the waitress having a personality that of soggy tempura and the preparer who would not offer to revise the order stating, «That’s how I do sushi»! Whatever… But for a $ 60.00 lunch tab, I would have expected more even paying less… The other time the tuna wasn’t at it’s best and I see the portions are not what they were in the past. In all fairness, both occasions were at lunch. Too bad, but other places just as close in the area.

I really love this place! It’s tiny and cozy with nice décor. Also, I think the food is great. We typically order the Sake(Salmon) Sashimi and it’s always fresh and delicious. We also always order the Lion King Roll which is beyond amazing — it literally melts in your mouth. It is SO good. The service is really nice and I think this is one of the better sushi restaurants in the Belmont/San Carlos area.

My husband found this very fresh, very local place off the beaten track(well, Alameda de las Pulgas) in Belmont when I was ill, and brought home some great soba vegetarian soup that was just what I needed. We went back once I was feeling better, and found it just the sort of quiet and restorative place we like. Excellent noodle dishes, we will be back for sushi when we feel more adventuresome.

This is the first place I ate at when I moved to the little town of Belmont. Ordered the vegetable udon and shrimp tempura roll, both of which were very filling and delicious! I’ve ordered the udon to go on separate occasions and it can last me ~3 servings. The quality of the sushi is okay. Service and atmosphere were very welcoming. The only other thing I have to say is they’re a little pricey for sushi and udon compared to what I can get in LA for the same price and quality, but I highly recommended eating here nonetheless! :)
