AAMCO Transmissions & Total Car Care

Word to the wise consumer, always get a second opinion on repair options. Recently my all wheel drive SUV broke down on the side of the road. Engine ran great but the wheels refused to drive the truck. Had my SUV towed into the nearby Aamco. Technician diagnosed drivetrain and reported to me that the transmission is bad, most likely a broken part inside. I was given an estimate of $ 3000 and a time frame of about a week to get a rebuilt transmission shipped in. I was never asked to sign the estimate. First sign of problem. To my best guess, the tech installed the new transmission and the problem of no drive to tires was still there. Service writer called me and informed me that the transfer case was also broken and I would need to come up with an extra $ 800 to get that replaced. At this point I called a GM tech I knew and he informed me that this is highly irregular to have both drivetrain components brake at the same time. I told the service writer something was not right. I agreed to pay the amount of the orginal, but unsigned estimate. Long story short, within our conversation and to avoid further issues, my SUV was put back together the way it came into the Aamco shop AT NO CHARGE TO ME. Which was the right way to go. Took the SUV into GM Tech, and found the problem was NOT the transmission, it was NOT the transfer case but rather a broken shaft in the front drive axle assembly. Should Aamco have moved forward with the transmission and transfer case replacement, I would have been out nearly $ 4000 and still not have a working truck. This is why I am suggesting shoppers always get a second opinion to make sure to protect your money and rights as a consumer.

My son’s Durango had transmission trouble around Christmas. We ended up having them rebuild the whole thing. They have since worked on it a few times for other things. They always do a great job.
I have had them work on my Baby, I mean my truck, And I don’t let just anybody work on him…
I now have a «new» used Durango also and am bring it to them to work on that one also. I’m almost an hour away but the drive is worth it, Steve and his crew are top notch.

I would be last person to recommend you to Aamco, I created a Unilocal just to caution others to not use their services. I had some transmission work done with them and my car ended up working fine. However, when I had other car issues, I brought it in for a diagnosis. They wanted to completely replace my radiator. Because it’s such an expensive fix, I wanted a second opinion. I took my car to Ron’s Autobody and it simply needed a new cap, replaced free of charge. The shop was confused why Aamco wanted to replace the whole system, so they called and asked for the notes taken on my vehicle; they had NOTHING.
Besides trying to waste my money on a false diagnosis, I was on warrantee for an oil change because of my new transmission. You’d think it would be a simple task; however, 2 months after I got it «changed», my oil was leaking out because the oil filter was horrible and the oil itself needed to be changed. Unbelievable. There is no way my car needed another oil change after 2 months. I will never return to Aamco, they try and scam you with the most expensive fix, and by not changing my oil and then returning my car to me saying they did, I could of have some serious mechanical issues. Again, probably thinking they would be the ones to fix it.
Horrible service, it would be worth searching for other shops or going out of town if you need some work done.
