Realizing Unilocal is not necessarily the best place to get a referral for a medical specialist, I am using it as one of the many sources of information in a city to which I recently moved from Bend. Thinking now it might be a good idea to post information about medical specialists on whom I relied for some part of my sixteen years of living in Bend, I offer this five star review for Dr. Laura Schaben, a neurologist who is part of the Bend Neurological Associates practice. Dr. Schaben sees all patients needing neurology care but she comes to Bend from OHSU in Portland where she was a post doctorate fellow in Multiple Sclerosis and while there worked with Dr. Dennis Bourdette, who is a leading specialist in MS and now head of OHSU’s Neurology center. I have had MS since I was 20 years of age(and trust me that was a long time ago) so I have had a fair amount of experience with neurology specialists across three states. Dr. Schaben is without a doubt one of the best for clinical care for a person with my disease. Not only is Dr. Schaben is a learned physician, she is approachable in that she does not, like so many neuros do, confuse herself with God. Although given how incredibly complex are neuro diseases one sees how neurologists might assume they are the Almighty. Truly. We who have malware brains and central nervous systems are not in to see Neurologists because we have bruised knees or sore throats. This brain and nervous system stuff is complicated enough for one disease. Imagine how unique are these doctors who are wired to be able to understand and provide clinical treatment for patients with many different neurological diseases. Not to mention be able to work with patients of many different personal styles from the«just tell me what to do» types to the«I want to understand the data so I can be a partner in the decision making on path forward» types. Amazing. Being among the latter population of patients and knowing others in the former population who are also patients of Dr. Schaben, I can say she makes her expertise apply for all of us to be equally comfortable. A Bend friend asked me yesterday for my recommendation for a neurologist and I said about the above. I then thought it might be worth posting on Unilocal too. THIS N THAT: 1) LOCATION: Office is on East side in a convenient location near but not in with other big medical complexes. An advantage. 2) PARKING: Ample amount in private lot. 3) ACCESSIBILITY: The accessible parking is underwater, that means has too few spaces to comply with Federal ADA Rules and Oregon Accessibility code, for scope(that means number of spaces required) for a medical treatment office. Go figure. Seems particularly important for this kind of practice to get correct. Otherwise, level in and throughout. 4) GOODSTAFF: Doctors’ staff people here are top notch for friendliness and keeping things humming with appointments, records and billing.
