Holding 3,500 square feet this center can be used for a number of events such as craft shows, weddings, receptions, reunions and my personal favorite… contra dancing! The center was originally built in the 1980’s by volunteers and many donors to help preserve the art of folk dancing in Appalachia. It is a nice spacious and clean facility great for doing any of these activities. You can often times find different activities going on as the ones mentioned above going on in this center. Contra dances are held every 4th Saturday in this center and let me tell you from experience they are loads of fun. It is definitely worth checking out! Contra Dancing at this facility is a great way to meet new people and build community within the area. Live folk music plays while you are partaking in the different dances. Now, if you are reading this and thinking because you may not be the most experienced dancer this is not the activity for you. Well, coming from a person that can’t move their hips to save their life and has no rhythm what so ever, trust me when I say anyone can participate in this event and still have a blast. There is an announcer who explains each step in depth before partaking in the actual dance. Contra Dancing is an event worth while to experience at the Folk Center and I highly recommend trying it out. Before you know it you will be hooked to the activity and find yourself visiting the Folk Center every month to Contra Dance!
