Berkeley Heights Post Office

This is a small post office located in a strip mall across the street from the Walgreens. I’ve only used it a handful of times, but each time the person behind the counter was very friendly and helpful.
Items I’ve mailed from here all arrived on time.

I’ve lived in Berkeley Heights for 15 years. Most of the time people who work in the post office are okay, on good days they could be nice, on bad days, you just drop off your package and get out of there and don’t expect them to be friendly. But one of the guys who works there, Ziggy (I think that’s his name-​big guy with white hair and mustache. There’s only one, you can’t miss him) is a racist-he’s been there forever, I guess that’s what makes him believe he owns the place. If you’re white, and a man, he’ll be super chill with you, he’ll call you «brother» and «captain» and talk spots with you and he’ll actually smile when he takes your packages and give you the shipping service you ask for. But if you’re an asian woman, particularly a young one. Forget about it. He’s rude and dismissive to me every time I go. And I only go there like once every six months anyway. And I’m as easy going a customer as they come, I drop off the package, pay the overpriced postage without complaints and I leave. I went in there a few days ago and asked him to look up a tracking number for me for a package I sent out 3 months ago, I explained to him that for some reason when I type in the tracking number in the website it says that the package’s tracking number can’t be found in the system. I asked him if he’d have better luck looking it up from me from his official post office computer. He refused to look it up for me. Just simply couldn’t be bothered. A few days later the package I sent out 3 MONTHS ago, was sent back to me-​dropped off on my front steps completely undelivered. I went in today to reship it, collectively paying more to ship that package than I spent on the thing I’m shipping itself. I got Ziggy again. I asked to ship priority and he wouldn’t let me! SERIOUSLY? I’m paying for it, dude, all you have to do is punch in the numbers and take my money! No reason not to give me what I asked for. But nope, dude gives me first class. I guess The Asian can’t have priority, cause that’s too high end a postal service for a second class citizen, huh? I told him I asked for priority, (nicely, like in a, «Oh, sorry, I asked for priority, would you mind fixating that for me?» and he snaps at me, «What do you want me to do!?» I tried to explain to him my problems shipping with first class last time, and he wouldn’t listen to me. He kept cutting me off, talking down to me like I was an idiot. He kept trying to point out that the customs forms (it’s an international package I’m shipping) has a tracking number on it. I told him at least 3 times, that I was aware of that, but when I shipped with first class last time the tracking on the customs label never worked, AND it was undelivered. But he couldn’t hear me over his racism. Eventually I walked out of their frustrated-​still didn’t get priority shipping for my package, and I have no clue if the thing will be delivered or if I just threw money down the drain trying to ship something that will be sent back to me again. It’s fine if he’s just a grumpy guy, some people are, what are you going to do about that? But it’s another thing entirely when he treats a specific type of people one way and another type of people another way. For the record I’ve had no beef with this guy or anybody else at that post office, I go there rarely enough and I’m polite enough when I do go that I doubt I’ve ever made much of an impression on anybody there, let alone a negative one to make someone have any grievances against me. There is absolutely no reason for him to be so rude and dismissive of me every time I go in there, only to turn around and treat the white guy who comes in after me with the respect he couldn’t be bothered to show me. It’s 2015 Ziggy, Racism is so 50 years ago! Some people are asian, there’s nothing wrong with that. GET OVER IT!

The Berkeley heights post office is on Springfield ave. It is a small post office with two staff members on shift. This place can really busy on a Saturday morning. The staff is friendly, but they can be really slow at times. The only thing that bothers me is if you show up near closing time, make sure your in the office before 1pm on a Saturday. They will close the doors on you and you have to come back the next day. I showed up exactly at 12:59p and they wouldn’t let me in even though there were other people in the office… bad policy. This post office does a good job of getting your packages where they need to go. They are located in a strip mall. They share the parking lot with many stores. There is plenty of free parking. They are open Monday thru Friday from 8:00am to 4:30p. On Saturdays 9:00a thru 1:00p Sundays they are closed. I guess since the mail does arrive to me daily I would use them.
