Held usually on a Columbus Day weekend in October, this festival is next to the Berkeley Springs State Park. This has been going on annually since 1974. There’s a harvest festival that includes a hometown parade, games, contests, music, food, fine arts, and local crafts. I didn’t see any of the giant copper kettles in the middle of the square where you could stir some spicy apple butter — I’m thinking it was because it was a rainy weekend. There is no admission fee, and the vendors line up along Washington St. The festival seems to be a popular attraction to the locals and it seemed as if we were the only out-of-towners who trekked to partake in the festivities. I assumed there would be more variety in vendors of purchasing apple butter or more products containing apple butter, but it was mostly like a craft fair. In addition, the Apple Butter contest winner, the Open Fire Vittles company, was actually off on a side street, so if you didn’t look hard enough and started wandering around, you could have missed in purchasing a solid jar of apple butter. +held on Columbus Day weekend
