I have been going to House of Curries for over a decade, when it used to be Naan and Curry. It is your classic inexpensive, good restaurant that’s hard to recommend to out of towners but the kind of place that I get take out from time and time again. I like all the tandoori meats and the chicken tikka masala, even though it is a little light on the protein. The channa is a little mushy though and the biryani could be more flavorful. While there are better Pakistani places in the Bay Area, House of Curries is definitely better than most.

This is possible the worst prepared Indian food and service I have received in the east bay. Do not recommend to anyone. I had their chicken tikka masala and the chicken was dry and cold… I ordered a spinach dish that had 3 different colored human hairs in it and the stag just watches you eat. No go for sure.

I went in the other night and the owner gave me my dinner for free because he said he wanted to me have a good night! I have been a customer for years and years and their food is incredible! Try the Aloo Naan and Chicken Tikka Masala!!!

Mediocre. The Palak Paneer only had one piece of paneer in it and the Chicken Tikka was watery and lacked flavor. Naan was doughy and bland. I probably won’t eat here again.

Besides the chai, excellent curries, the enormous(and delicious) naan, and option of sweet or salty lassis, House of Curries is a great casual Indian place to grab dinner. To start, you begin by placing your order at the counter by the entrance. Note that curries do not come with naan or rice, so plan on ordering one of the two if you’d like them with your meal. Next, I’d recommend a hot glass of chai(with however much sugar you’d like to add from the bowl next to the ever-filled samovar.) Endless chai is a side benefit of eating in at the restaurant, though chai can also be purchased to go. There are a variety of vegetarian, lamb, chicken, and seafood dishes, biryanis, and tandoori dishes. The papad is quite good, as are the naan(the garlic is a favorite) and the roti(which seem to be made with some whole wheat flour.)

We went here for dinner by the good reviews. We ordered malai kofta, vegetable Korma, paneer tikka Masala and Naan. Everything was totally bland with no difference in taste between them. They had no spices and no flavor. We said to make it hot and they basically added chunks of chili powder without even mixing it well. The naan tasted like pizza dough and lacked flavor of an authentic naan. Worst indian food I have ever eaten and will never go back again. This place is not an authentic indian cuisine by any means. Highly recommend to skip this place if you want authentic indian food.

Really enjoyed our meal with a relaxed(though somewhat oddly decorated) environment. We had veggie korma and prawn vindaloo which I found had a good spice. We also enjoyed the chicken naan, garlic and onion but the chicken was my favorite.

Try the Indian fried rice it’s delicious. The lamb meals are also very yummy and the staff is great. Always ask for their reco. Centrally located in berkeley next to the theater and great coffee shops. Prices are very affordable and the veggie samosas are also very good.

My first time here and I like this place. Ide like to start off by saying that the service was great and was greeted right away and offered recommendations. I ordered the lamb tikka masala and naan with side order of pakawra which tasted great! The tea was complimentary and the place looked very ethnic. Yes I would recommend this place and come back.

Relax. You’re at House of Curries. Just grab a menu, fill up a mug of their complementary chai, and seat yourself. Checkout the menu(palak, tikka masala, korma — no worries — it’s all good!), and when your ready walk up and order. And don’t worry about taking out your wallet till after you eat. Food comes first. Always. When the food comes, and it will come fast, you’ll be blown away by the portions. The naan is huge! Go for the garlic or aloo. If you dig samosas theirs are fantastic and, once again, generous. It’s easy to over order, and at the price you won’t want to hold back. If you come at lunch they also have a great lunch combo. Two curries, half naan, rice.7.99! And as always… Free chai. Now close Unilocal and dig into some house of curries!

I went here for the first time for lunch, and I am glad I checked this place out. Food was good and not too expensive. This is one of those places where you order at the counter and then pick up your own silverware. You can also grab some tea, or if you prefer, a pitcher of water from the refrigerator. I ordered the chicken aloo palak curry combo, which came with plenty of naan bread. The chicken was slightly dry, but still very good. The spinach and potatoes were good, and the curry itself had enough spice to it. There are other curries that I would like to try here, so it looks like I’ll have to come back!

Open late. Affordable. Great food. This place is a must try in Berkeley. Their naan is amazing and they give you so much bread. It’s a super casual place and they have self served chai tea(which is excellent). I honestly have tried everything off the menu And recommend the bitter melon dish or the chicken masala or lentil. The décor and music really takes you in the Indian culture.

DISCLAIMER: I’ve only been here once so my review may change. I came here last night with my girlfriend to try something new in the area(we recently moved to North Oakland). We ordered paneer tiki masala, aloo gobi, and of course a side of garlic naan. Indian food is my favorite dish so I could be more picky than others, but each dish seemed to lack flavor. The masala was a little too creamy and lacked spiciness. The aloo gobi was fine at first bite, but it seemed like the flavor disappeared mid chew. The garlic naan was delicious and I don’t have any complaints. The food was not terrible by any means and I do see myself coming back here for a second chance. I may ask to make my food spicier to see if it changes my opinion. All other comments aside, the service was nice and quick. We were able to take our order and be seated within 5 minutes of entering the restaurant. Plates and utensils are self serve, which is fine with me.

I came here one evening for dinner in my quest for curry. House of Curries is not the best but it wasn’t bad either. You order at the counter and seat yourself done with your order number until your food arrived at your table. Very informal setting and it could be a bit confusing if you’re not used to this system. I had the Chicken Vindaloo and a side of garlic Naan bread. Dining by myself prevented me(or saved me) from a gastric disaster. The sauce of the Chicken Vindaloo was nicely seasoned and very flavorful. The chicken on the other hand, was on the dry side where chewing on the meat wasn’t all that pleasant. Dry stringy chicken was hard to chew and ingest. If the meat was a bit more juicy, it would have made a whole lot of difference. The garlic Naan was fair with minimal garlic flavor. The bread itself was huge and you’ll need a party of two(at least) to polish it off. I ate what I could and took home the rest. Overall the House of Curries was not bad but the dish I ordered could have been prepared better. I really like the Vindaloo sauce but wished there was a level of heat option. The sauce was a bit too mild for me taste but I’m a fire eater. Would I come here again… yes.

I was hoping to like this place since it’s so close by, but it’s just not very good. The naan is too crispy, the curries are underseasoned and have very small portions(and have lots of veggie filler, too) and overall just a disappointment. Delivery was really fast though. Also, note that the entrees don’t come with rice. Shouldn’t that be standard? If you want really consistently great Indian in the area, go with Mehak. For about the same price you get much better food at more generous postions.

Not the best, but not the worst. Here, you order at the counter and they bring you the food. We had the prawn masala, chicken vindaloo, chicken korma and the mixed vegetables. The dishes were not as flavorful as some other Indian restaurants. They were also not too spicy either which is ok by me. The best dish was probably the masala which had decent flavor and the worst was the vindaloo which was too sour. The others were ok but just needed more taste. The free chai tea was watered down so lacked flavor as well. At the chai station, they should really put the sugar in a pour bottle instead of a large open bowl. I have a feeling people are using the sugar spoon to mix their chai and then putting it back in the sugar bowl. This is causing large lumps of hard sugar in the bowl for everyone else. PS-The prices are not too accurate on their website. Some items are a little more expense at the restaurant.

Chicken tikka masala is solid and really filling. Make sure to order a side of rice if you like having that oh-so-delicious sauce over a little something extra. Their cheese naan is a super tasty alternative too. Also saw they have mango lassi for $ 2. Whaat? Best part is the free chai tea. It’s relatively mellow on the chai and pretty milky. Add sugar to taste!

+/- Curry was just meh. Also not very spicy, even at «medium» heat. - Didn’t bring rice with the curry… Every other place I’ve ever ordered from brings plain rice with the curries… Anyway, I was rice-less. Be sure to order a side if you want some. - No sauces with the samosas. :( - Moody delivery guy. Sorry, but it does make the experience less great when the guy basically grunts handing the food over. - Delivery time was not terrible(55min) but it was a full 15 min longer than the confirmed delivery time they quoted… Come on people — under promise, over deliver — that’s the key!

Yummy good food and good prices. We ordered many many dishes so we had plenty of leftovers to take home, also the food is easy to reheat and eat later. My favorite things were the samosas and the yogurt sauce, also the lamb kabob was delicious, but a bit dry. Chai tea was not spicy at all, tasted like plain tea with milk, but it was free so… Naan was good as well, especially the garlic naan. Yummy to dip in a daal or other dishes. Overall the food was tasty, also i was super extra hungry so everything tasted even better than normal. I give this place three stars because several things: * It was confusing when i entered, i wasn’t sure how to order, and then i didn’t realize i had to grab all my own stuff(forks, etc) and pour my own chai and grab my own plates. Wasn’t clear. Ambiance — meh. * Bathroom wasn’t the cleanest i’ve seen. No place to hang your purse and jacket, and i sure didn’t want to put them on that floor… * Food was good, but i expected more spices and more flavor. Chicken was ok. Lamb was too dry. * Chai lacked spices, i could make better at home. * Samosa was good, yogurt sauce was bland. * Rice was flavorful! * Staff was ok. * Cheap Overall: I am pretty sensitive to different flavors of food so i usually don’t need stuff to be too spicy, i actually like it more bland than most people. However this place, even i would spice up some of those dishes. Conclusion: Good spot to eat when on a budget and you want a bang for your buck and really crave those indian dishes. Food is pretty good, but if you absolutely must have that spice, i’d go elsewhere.

I always passed by this place but I never went in but I decided to take my mom here for dinner since she likes Indian/middle eastern food. * parking can be tedious: street parking. * outside and indoor seating. * prices of the dishes are a little on the expensive side($ 10+ per main dish) but the dishes are SHAREABLE! * when we entered in, the guy in front had a good sense that we were new so he handed us menu’s and told us to sit at «7», which was confusing because there was no table that had«7» on it. * after looking through the menu and finally decided, we waited but never saw a waiter. After awhile, a guy passed by and told us that we order at the front and we get our drinks/napkins/utensils ourselves(which are located on the left side of the restaurant) which confused me again because I wasn’t used to a place like this where it seemed like a waiter would do those kind of things for you: P * FREE chai tea when you dine in! $ 1 for to go. Chai was really good ! * I ordered their fish curry which was 2 big pieces of salmon with yellow curry. I don’t really eat much Indian food and I wasn’t expecting it to be so spicy :(their basmati rice was delicious and their plain naan was soft and hot($ 2.99 for a big piece) I couldn’t finish my salmon because of how spicy it was getting but I also couldn’t finish it because I didn’t realize how much they give you so I took it to go. TIP: if you let them know ahead of time that you don’t like your food too spicy, they’ll give you a side of yogurt to add into the curry so it won’t be too spicy(o: At the end, I was completely stuffed! It was a very good experience and ill be coming here more often, next time ill just share a main dish with someone: P
