After getting a sewing machine as a wedding present, I decided to take a refresher class, and Stitch was well-reviewed and nearby. They didn’t have any Sewing 101 classes scheduled the week I wanted, so I dashed off an email asking if I could get a lesson. «How about today? Sunday night? Or next week?» came the reply. I dashed right over, new machine in hand. Sage was juggling multiple students to accommodate me, each with her own totally different project. Luckily, Sage is a natural teacher and discerned through some kind of sorcery the things I didn’t even realize I wanted to learn, while avoiding a boring rehash of what I already knew. So my refresher ran me through how to thread a machine, but then I got to make a skirt from a pattern and use the serger to put it together – neither of which I had even done before. She only taught me what I NEEDED to know, and kept me moving to finish the skirt before I left. No, I didn’t pin the seams to sew it perfectly, but I know how to pin. I sure didn’t know how to read a pattern! It was the best kind of refresher class: one that quickly reminded you, then moves you onto new skills to learn as you practice the old. I will unquestionably come back, and the warm, friendly vibe of the lab makes you want to just hang out and craft like the sewing circles of old.

STITCH is a fabulous resource for people who sew and those who don’t. Sage is a creative and patient teacher, and I enjoy seeking her ideas on my projects. My daughter — now nine — had her birthday party at STITCH and she and her friends have a fantastic time… AND they went home with adorable flannel pajama pants they actually wear! She’s also looking forward to another week of summer camp with Sage. I am so grateful we have a place like STITCH where my daughter can enjoy learning to create beautiful and useful things!

I just got back from my first«Sew-cial» at Stitch Sewing Lab & Creative Lounge and I’m so glad I found about this place! I ‘ve taken my daughters there for a drop-in after-school sewing lab and they were thrilled. One of the owners helped them make coin purses with cute owls embroidered on them and hair barrettes. They are begging to go back again. Stitch Sewing Lab & Creative Lounge is exactly what the name says it is — a place where you can sew, create and learn while hanging out with other creative people. It’s housed in the Tannery Building on Gilman, with tall windows letting in lots of natural light, a large cutting and work table, sewing library including patterns, and many sewing machines ranging from standard machines to sergers, a coverhem machine, and some pretty fancy but easy to use embroidery machines. Stitch has classes and events for children, teens and adults, and camps when schools are closed, as well as drop-in studio time where you can use everything(thread included!) for only $ 10/hour. Every other Thursday night they have a free«sew-cial“night where you can bring a project to work on and hang out with some really nice people. Not only did I get my sewing done but I also enjoyed seeing what other people at the sew-cial were working on and sharing ideas. Check it out!
