Kudos to the owner for contacting me about the discrepancy in price between the original estimate and the ultimate fee charged. The owner also gave me a gift certificate for the misunderstanding. Most businesses care little about customer satisfaction, but I had to give Storey Framing another star here for its commitment to making it right.

Three of my Marin-based clients have me drive their art to Berkeley for framing. Storey is that good. I quickly learned, It is well worth the drive to Berkeley to use Storey Framing. Jim and Larry are consummate professionals. The quality of their work greatly outshines two local purveyors I’ve used in the past I would equate their attention to detail and execution to true craftsmen. Old school. Their selection of frames dazzles.

I have used several frame shops in the area and Jim Storey is the best. I previously used the Framer’s Workshop, but they botched a job by getting a dirt smudge on an expensive Goines lithograph that they could not remove and they did not offer to replace it. They fixed it as best they could and passed it off at that. Another time an employee scratched a photograph and claimed the scratch was present before it was brought in. I believe Jim may have trained one or more people who operate Framer’s years ago, but in this case the teacher was always better. Jim is slightly more expensive than most places, but he is the most skilled and can be trusted. Jim’s mats are well cut and he is very careful. If you have anything valuable and want your job done right this is where to come.

Jim and Larry do incredible work and I love patronizing their small shop whenever I have artwork to frame. Their pricing may be a bit higher than some competitors, but I think that reflects their attention to detail and personal touch. As long as I live nearby, I wouldn’t imagine taking framing work to anyone else.

I had a special piece of artwork framed at Storey Framing and was very pleased with the results — they were able to frame it quickly and took a lot of care helping me pick out a frame. In the end they did not have the frame I wanted in stock, but a good alternative was available. I did have some sticker-shock, but it was worth it to me to have a quality product. Before I came in I was very nervous about leaving the piece with strangers, but after talking with one of the owners I realized they are true artists and felt completely confident they would take care of everything. And they did! Would highly recommend Storey Framing.

The only negative about Storey’s is the price of framing. It’s not exorbitant. Just somewhat higher than other local framers. Having said that, the quality of work is excellent. A lot of time and skill is devoted to the pictures they frame. Service is also exemplary. They are genuinely kind and thoughtful. I will definitely use Storey’s again.

They can frame anything! And they know what they’re doing. If it’s worth framing, it’s worth coming here. They might be more expensive than a place like Aaron Brothers or Michael’s, but they will do an excellent job, and they will help you find something within your budget that you’ll be thrilled with. When I was on a young bride’s budget, they helped me get a wedding sampler framed archivally within my budget and it’s still gorgeous. Since then, I’ve had them frame maps, prints, a piece of antique lace, photographs, and children’s artwork, and it’s always turned out even better than I’d expected. Your treasures will be safe with them. Their selection of frame moldings is beautiful, too. If you want to take a little extra care to get something special and unusual, come here.

I have had many many items framed by Jim Storey of Storey Framing. He was originally suggested to me by artist Tom Killion and came highly recommended. In fact, nearly everything in my home has been framed by Jim Storey. And for good reason. The quality of the work is exceptional. Storey has a wide range of frame and mat options and I have always been able to find something that works for my purposes. Not only do Jim and Larry provide a friendly and comfortable setting, without rushing the decision-making process, but they have helped me time and time again to make the right decisions about selecting frames and mat. In addition, he has built some tricky custom frames to accommodate some of my more off-beat needs(such as framing a small book). They always give excellent estimates for the time it would take to frame my piece. And they have always delivered on time, if not early. In addition he carries a nice assortment of prints at very good prices including Tom Killion. I whole-heartedly recommend Storey Framing. I especially like to support excellent small local businesses and Storey is just that.

I’ve used these folks just once, but I am impressed that they have a small-business attitude about good customer service. Larry, the owner takes personal care of his customers, so you know the buck stops there. Most of the businesses in the Hopkins Monterey neighborhood are mom and pop joints… and there’s no parking meters, so it’s a popular spot on the weekends.

This quaint little store in Berkeley does a beautiful job of custom framing of pictures, paintings and prints. The BEST thing about them, aside from their tasteful framing, is that they carry gorgeous Tom Killion woodcut prints. Tom Killion has done some amazing prints of California classic views like Yosemite’s Half Dome, or Muir Woods, or Big Sur. They also carry Yoshiko Yamamoto. Truly, these prints are gorgeous and reasonably priced.
