My husband and I were house hunting in the area and after walking through what very well might be our next home we stopped at Tavern on 13 for dinner. As we were walking in, my husband said, «this could be our next neighborhood hang out.» After our meal there, I can say for sure that it will NOT be our next hang out. My husband and I both ordered sandwiches. He had a burger and I had salmon. I thought that for what we received at a place with plastic table cloths the food was seriously overpriced. You don’t even get chips with a $ 9 sandwich? I didn’t really enjoy my sandwich, because I felf that the flavors didn’t go well together, but someone else might enjoy it. What really annoyed me was the way the kitchen handled my husband’s burger. He had ordered a cheeseburger and they brought it out without the cheese. When the waiter set it down he explained that they were out of the type of cheese that he had ordered and offered to get him a different kind. My husband selected a different kind of cheese and the waiter left to get it. After he had taken a bite of the burger, the waiter then came back, took his burger back to the kitchen to get the cheese melted onto the burger. It seemed kinda gross that they would put a burger with a bite out of it back on their grill to melt the cheese and then bring us back the same burger & bun. I did really enjoy the fact that the dining room was full of families with kids and the adults were all drinking heavily. The grandmas beside us were drinking martinis while their grandkids colored their placemats. Maybe if we had been drinking we wouldn’t have minded the food and service so much.

Yummy pizza, and friendly customer service. This company also owns Deli Unique, and Shiraz among others. I had the thin crust pizza with pepperonis, onions, and mushrooms. They’re open until 11 which is great for an after theater meal.

Tavern on 13 holds a special place in my heart. I had the worst dining experience of my life there. It was a warm summer evening, a weeknight in June. I decided to treat two of my friends and my GF to a decent meal. We chose Tavern on 13 because they have a decent variety of offerings and the locally famous Matt Prentice cant possibly own a ‘bad restaurant’. Wow. We could not have been more wrong! Here is a re-cap of what I experienced: The place was ¾ full. We were seated in the bar area at one of the high top tables. No one came with menus until I flagged down a waitress. Poof! 10 min wasted waiting for menus. We waited another 10 min. for our actual waitress to visit the table. When the waitress finally came she quickly took drink orders and rattled off specials(no apology for the wait). She must have been all of 15 years old. After another 15 min. our dinks showed up. But I watched them sit at the bar for 10 min. before she brought them to us. She took our order and the epic wait began. I ordered ribs, as did my friend. My other friend ordered a burger and the GF ordered a steak. The food arrived after 40 min. The Ribs were so-so at best. Not really all that hot either, they seemed like they had been sitting in a warming ‘vat’ for long enough for them to become tough and chewy like a baseball glove. The real surprise came when my girlfriend cut into her steak to find that her desired medium came out very rare on one end and well done on the other. Upon finding this I flagged down the waitress. My GF told the server that the steak was unevenly cooked: very rare at one end well done at the other. The young server decided to take a look at the rare end of the steak, and upon her ‘expert’ inspection she declared«nope… that is medium». I bit my tongue, hard. My friend set his burger down and explained that he is a professional chef(this is true) and that she must be retarded or blind and that she needed to send it back… I had them remove it from the bill instead. The waitress was rude, unintelligent and slow. The food was cold, old and undercooked. I spent $ 85 on that meal and I had never felt so ripped off in my entire life. Especially after the teenage server decided to give us all a lesson in beef temperature. I stiffed the tip and wiped BBQ sauce on the mirror in the bathroom. A nice expressionist piece of food art to reflect the quality of product they put out. I paid the bill and will never go back to ANY matt prentice restaurant again. PS. My chef friend sent Mr. Prentice an e-mail about the horrendous experience and his response was to ask my fiend to «give it a try again». No apology, no offer of compensation… no concern for how his business is being run. What a JOKE!

Great tuna sandwiches, great salads. Fresh warm bread served upon seating. Amazing soups, too! My favorite is the veggie chili! My brother used to work here, and the fact that he still eats there is a big deal.

Not special but a nice place for a burger and a beer. Well maybe more for a beer and a burger. Food is ok. Bar is ok. Just a nice neighborhood place.

I could not have been more unimpressed with the Tavern on 13. While the waitress was polite, she wasn’t the best by far, but I could care less really about staff, my real issue was with the food. It was… awful. Not only was it awful, but it was extremely over-priced. My wife and I both ordered sandwiches, and our bill came to about $ 25. Lesson learned, I won’t waste more money at this place, I’d recommend everyone to go across the street to Brady’s Pub, the food is MUCH better there.

I used to patron Tavern on 13 back when I was in middle and high school and I remember the restaurant being very busy and delicious. I was a big fan of the spinach and artichoke dip and the vegetarian chili. There wasn’t a big change when the restaurant changed to Flying Fish, but over time I felt that the quality of food decreased and then the menu changed and the veggie chili was gone, so I stopped going. I heard a rumor that they changed back to Tavern on 13 and then someone recently told me that the vegetarian chili is back on the menu, so I ventured over there last weekend to find out. I came to Tavern on 13 around 9pm on a Saturday night and the place was not at all busy. We were seated right away and the hostess was very friendly. Our waitress came over right away and dropped off bread and was very nice. The bread is sooo delicious(it always has been!). We really liked the wheat bread a lot. I love the olive bread also, but they didn’t have any at the time. I ordered the veggie chili and a side salad and my mom and sister both got whitefish burgers(which they were super happy to see back on the menu). The waitress made a few mistakes on our order, but we were all really pleased with our meals. I think it would do the place well to get a makeover and a menu update. The veggie options are a little slim and I would love if there was an entrée version of the veggie chili. Ordering only a bowl doesn’t really fill me up on its own.

I walked into this place thinking it was going to be a Tavern type atmosphere but like another reviewer said it is a“family friendly” type of atmosphere. I was suprised to see that it was Matt Prentice restaurant. The food was alright but some of the entrée’s seemed a bit expensive. Isn’t $ 14.95 a little too much for fish and chips? I got one of the only vegetarian things on the menu, a portabella sandwich which annoys me as a vegetarain because portabellas are so watery they should not be on a sandwich. It’s like the default food besides a veggie burger or pasta and marinara that restaurants use as the vegetarian option. Still just that sanwich was around $ 8 no fries/soup/salad/cole slaw included. I might go again but no time soon.

Although I used to frequent this place when it was the Flying Fish, I would NEVER go to this place ever again. The hostess that sat us was so extremely rude to my girlfriend that we had to have a little talk with the manager and, ultimately, we ended up leaving without ever even having our meal there(went across Southfield Road to Matt Brady’s…much better!). The only highlight of the evening was the glass of wine the two of us received on the house. Hence, the one star. If you want to eat at a legitimate Prentice establishment, try the Coach Insignia at the top of the Ren Cen. They’ll treat you like Kings and Queens, not like poppers.

I attended a graduation dinner here and it was pretty nice. We had a party of about 22 so the wait staff was pretty busy but still efficient. Our food had been pre-ordered as this was a gift to the graduate and paid for by the family. I of course had the House Salad. I’m a true bread eater and had plenty, which was really good. Sourdough to be exact. I really enjoyed the environment. Since the party was large the restaurant did it’s best to accommodate us and to give us some privacy all at the same time. No complaints about this place at all.

Another Prentice joint. This place was originally Tavern on 13, followed by Flying Fish Tavern, and now is back to the original identity. The menu is eclectic in variety and unified in mediocrity. Tell me, for instance, why you’d get lasagna here when you could get a less expensive and tastier dish at even an unsavory Italian place? The ambiance is «family-friendly nauseating.» It seems that Matt is tailoring his restaurants to his core support group, made up of the tastebud-less 78 year old woman. It was a shame to have shelved the Flying Fish concept. In its heyday the place had one of the best selections of fresh fish in the area, and a booming bar scene with live music. The one worthwhile holdover is the sourdough bread. The place also has a great support staff and apparently a pretty clean kitchen(earning the place its 2nd star!)
