Smallish café with a little different twist on the usual breakfast menu. Service was friendly and reasonably timed — an extra was we were told we could go to the adjoining bookstore to wait until the food was ready if we wanted(we did). I got the«Traditional Breakfast» with eggs, Sweet Potato Gratin, and pepper bacon. Sweet potato gratin was something I had never seen before(maybe it’s a southern thing) but very good! Everything else was fine, no complaints.

Best Brunch in Alabama, I always get the Hardy Breakfeast with fish or steak. Today I selected the steak(Ribeye) and also got two poached eggs with a fantastic side salad. You also get sweet potato casserole but I doubled down on the salad. THe salad is gourmet with onions, tomatoes, avocado and topped with sour cream and basmati dressing. My wife got the soup and half a sandwich. Tomatoe Bisque was the soup and for the half sandwich she requested one half chicken salad and one half pimento on wheat. This is actually one fourth for each. The folks at Crape Myrtle always make adjustments to prepare what ever your hearts desire .The soup and sandwich also come with fresh fruit. Jim and Chop always deliver get service and this is a special place.

This is a hidden treasure in Birmingham! I am always searching for unique spots to eat, that are local and friendly and that is exactly what you will find here! They offer a good selection of breakfast and lunch items, and they are open for Sunday brunch! There’s lots to choose from but you can pick and match to create just what you would like! I got cream of chicken and rice soup and half of a pimento cheese sandwich, both delicious! The atmosphere is quiet and quaint, love it!

We love this wonderful café for lunch. Every time I’m in my hometown of Birmingham I make sure to get a couple of meals here, plus it’s always great to catch up with Jim Muir, the friendly owner. The extensive menu is filled with great local dishes. You can go big or have a light salad and soup. I love the chicken salad sandwich but also am thrilled with a Southern vegetable plate and cornbread. Jim’s home made oatmeal cookies, as well the heath bar cookies, are INCREDIBLE. Great iced tea and love the ambiance as it’s attached to a bookstore. Highly Recommend!!!

Visited Crape Myrtle for Sunday Brunch today hoping to experience delicious food with the quaint atmosphere as portrayed. I entered to find an employee sweeping at my feet, no greeting and when I asked if we should seat ourselves, I guess so was the response. The huevos rancheros were presented with extremely al dente black beans over some white rice, lettuce with one very small sliver of avocado, two poached eggs and a tortilla shelled almost as hard as a chip. The salsa was very cold and tasted like none other than Pace. My daughter ordered a child’s burger and received a full bun with half a patty. Excuse me!!! I asked the waiter and he said the child’s burger is 3oz of meat and the adult burger is 6oz so you only get half a patty. I asked him to go ahead and make it an adult size, thinking he would take it to the kitchen and make it right, he brought out the other half of the patty on a small plate and LEFT. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Don’t think I will go back.

Brunched here this past weekend with the girls! I used to frequent this spot for lunch on the regular since I worked down the street from this place during college. I loved it back then and I still love it now! I love the charm of it! It’s attached to Little Professor’s and there’s dedicated parking in the back which is also a plus! There’s a cute outdoor patio that can be enjoyed on a good weather day. The interior is cute with a bar and tables available for seating. It’s normally a seat yourself place. I ordered the Traditonal B with the sweet potato au gratin, biscuits and chicken sausage. The combo was delicious! That au gratin was out of this world good! Combined with everything on the plate, the flavors went very well together! Great portion size as well. My friend got the french toast and cleaned her plate so it must’ve been good too! The service was great! Water refills were frequent and our waitor was very patient while taking our orders(we were indecisive lol). Overall great experience! Will try to make it to Homewood more often for this treat!

I went here for Sunday brunch. Once with my parents and another time with friends. I loved both times! I got the oatmeal brûlée for the table(you’ve gotta get it). Then I got the eggs Benedict. The bread was so incredibly fresh and the eggs were poached perfectly. The only negative(if I had to pick one) is that there is a $ 10 charge for using credit cards. Just bring cash and go to brunch and you won’t regret it!

Hidden behind the Little Professor book shop, Crape Myrtle offers a nice breakfast and lunch selection in a warm and casual atmosphere. Traveling through the city, they kindly let us order breakfast after lunch had started. I had the traditional breakfast with excellent scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. My knucklehead daughters had mashed potatoes and red beans and rice. My wife had a croissant with grilled peaches. A great find.

My family and I really enjoyed this place. Were from out of town and didnt want to eat at a chain. Kinda hard to find because it shares a building with a bookstore. A hidden gem for sure. Pork Loin awesome as well as the rice and beans and mashed potatoes I chose as sides.

The menu is really diverse for such a small place and they do a nice job with everything we’ve ever tried. Their vegetables aren’t cooked to death which is huge with me. Nice folks who serve good, fresh food.

A cozy café with classically good food. I used to go there nearly every week when I was growing up in Homewood. Now that I live across the country, I catch myself craving their food. On cold days in Portland, I crave their chicken and wild rice soup and a side of green beans stewed with tomatoes more than anything. Additionally, the owners(who are almost always there) couldn’t be sweeter people.

The food is gross and the short man that works the counter is rude to women. He informed one of my friends that she was«ordering too much food to eat». This particular friend has issues with food and is VERY skinny. He continued to roll his eyes and glance at the customers, winking. This only made this line behind us uneasy. When I reported this man to the management, they made excuses regarding his behavior due to his status as an immigrant. I don’t care where the dude is from — you do not treat women like crap in this country. The owners made sexist comments regarding women in general. The other patrons voiced their concern to us after witnessing the manner in which my friend was treated. Needless to say, the management gave me a half-ass apology, then continued to make excuses.

Let me start by saying this café is in the same building as the Little Professor. After circling the block several times, I finally pulled up their website on my phone and figured that out. There’s a small sign, but they could definitely benefit from some more visibility. Atmosphere is cute and cozy. A little noisy but not bad. I liked the paper their menus are on, and the coffee cups and saucers are adorbs. Service was fantastic. Friendly without being obtrusive, and my coffee cup was refilled like 9 times. My sweet potato gratin had one or two cold spots, and I’m sure they would have reheated it for me but it was so good I just dug in as is. One of my dining companions was bummed his huevos rancheros only came with one tortilla and only one slice of avocado, but on the other hand I was impressed that when a friend ordered a dish without meat, they said they would add a side of fruit to his meal. I love when I order«no bacon» or «no meat» and get offered something else without having to ask. I usually try to go somewhere more than once before reviewing, but since I was in from out of town I probably won’t make it back anytime in the near future, but I would definitely go back the next time I am in the neighborhood!
