Full moon is local, that has become commercial. The portions are large(hence the price), the sides are good, they have great tea, they’re open on Sunday, and usually the dining room is clean. The meat tastes as though«liquid smoke» was used… yea, there are better; yea there are worse.

We chose Full Moon BBQ while in Birmingham since we like sauce on style of BBQ. We ordered two baby back rib dinners and one bbq chicken dinner for the three of us. Extremely disappointed in everything. The ribs were very over cooked and to call anything warm would be generous. Probably the worst $ 45 bbq meal we’ve ever had and we have had lots of good and bad bbq over the years. We do not recommend this place.

I just stopped by for their deserts with a friend. We had coconut and key lime pie. Both were tasty and about $ 4 each. Not a large slice. But, not small either. Just about the right size. The interior of the restaurant is nice. I don’t eat meat but the menu looked kind of expensive. There were plenty of places to sit. Seems like a good place to bring a family.

One of my favorite places to go for barbecue. Everyone wants to go to other places to eat. And I insist I must go to golden rule for a barbecue sandwich, ribs, and chowchow. Absolutely awesome.

I started eating Full Moon years ago as a member of a local teacher’s union. Every month at our membership meeting, we had Full Moon to cater the meal that we fed the lucky souls that showed up. Fast forward to today, and they are still on my favorite BBQ place list. I usually get the white meat chicken off the bone plate or the pulled pork sandwich with macaroni and cheese and baked beans. I’m never disappointed. The food is consistently yummy in my tummy, fresh and cooked to order piping hot. They have some of the best sweet tea you ever want to taste and the carrot cake is always a must. I truly love the food here. So why not 5 stars you ask? Full Moon, albeit tasty, is not that easy on your pockets. You get a decent amount of food, but for a casual dining experience– the prices are… well, not budget friendly. I spent $ 16 on just myself the last time I went. And it didn’t even include a drink. But would I spend it again? I sure would! When I want to treat myself to comfort food that makes me smile, I’ll eat here. Every time.

I visited this location a couple of times recently because I worked near it. Both times the place looked pretty clean and while it was busy, it wasn’t crowded. The food arrived quickly each time(though if you get one of the burgers, you’ll wait longer because they cook them to order). I’ve had the BBQ pork, which was pretty good. Comparable to Jim N Nicks or Golden Rule. Their sauce is typical of the south — pretty tangy. My favorite item on the menu though is the pimento cheese sandwich. Each time I got it, the bread was nicely toasted and the cheese gooey because of the heat. Yum! The mac and cheese side is pretty good as well. I don’t know if it’s «homemade» or not, but it didn’t taste like the processed kind. It actually had some seasoning. Definitely give it a shot if you haven’t already. The prices are great for the amount of food that you get and it’s good for a quick work lunch.

Great food and gate prices. Don’t skimp on the food. I worry when the are no customers at dinner time.

The food here is good. The décor is much better if your an Alabama Fan as the interior has college football everywhere. Very large TV’s. You do have to order at the counter and your food is brought out too you. Large portions are consistent. I love the chow chow.

Tried the brisket, fried green tomatoes & okra. All were very good. What was outstanding was the Chow Chow; hot & spicy relish. I will make the trip there again just for a jar of this.

The food in this place was amazing. I couldn’t decide what I wanted, so I got the two-meet platter with brisket and turkey. Great decision. Went with baked beans and mac-n-cheese for my two sides and both were good choices. The other three people at my table were equally satisfied with their orders. I also saw one of their $ 8.99 baked potatoes come out… the size of a football and loaded with toppings!!! I want to try one of them the next time. Oh, and make sure to get a piece of the carrot cake. Easily the best piece I’ve ever had. No frills at this place, but great eating. I highly recommend it. You won’t go away hungry either.

Solid BBQ, especially for a fast-food type of place.

Order at the counter, take a seat and your food is brought to the table. Today, I chose to go with the sliced beef brisket, with the day’s special(squash casserole) and mac & cheese. The squash was great, the mac & cheese was creamy and tasty. The brisket was meh. Not especially moist and the taste of the meat was overpowered by the sauce that they slathered over the top. I’ve had better. In Charlotte. In Asheville. In Texas. Heck, even in Washington DC. Warning: Watch out for the bump from the road into the lot!

Due to the proximity to my office I have eaten at this location more times than I can remember and they never let me down. They have a huge menu!!! You can get all the normal bbq sandwiches or plates but my suggestions is to venture beyond that. Some of the highlights for me are their BBQ Potatoes, Salads, Hot Wings, and Hamburgers. There are many other non-BBQ options to chose from as well. They also have crème pies and some of the best carrot cake I’ve ever have.

To be honest, BBQ joints are a dime a dozen in Birmingham. This place neither stands out, nor is it poor quality. It is right by my office, but I have only been here maybe 3 times in 6 years. This last visit I had the open face pork link sandwich, served on Texas toast, and which came with fries(very thick fries, maybe Texas fries?). The sausage was rather mild, but had decent flavor. Fries were okay. I’m not a fan of large fries because while the exterior is crisp, the interior is a little on the mushy side. They are better drenched in BBQ sauce. Service wasn’t really fast, but fast enough for lunch. Staff were friendly, and the store was clean(floors were not sticky and tables were clean). This is a solid BBQ restaurant to which I would feel comfortable bringing a someone who was a guest to Birmingham or to the south to let them try Alabama style BBQ. At some point I have to try their pie. Most BBQ places claim to have great pie, and maybe if I try the pie here they will get another star.

We had Full Moon brought in for a working lunch, and I must say I was pretty pleased. I chose the two meat combo, with smoked turkey(medium slices of juicy, smoky turkey breast) and smoked pork links(which were perfectly spiced). I subbed both of the sides that came with it for a loaded baked potato. Huge pile of food for $ 13! Others in my group had the chicken tenders, onion rings(neither of which I’d get because horrible things happen to breaded things in steamy to-go styrofoam containers), brisket and ribs. The last two looked good… but I think I made the best choices. The cookies. *sigh* Who’d have thought? We didn’t know when we ordered them that they were famous. Chocolate chip and pecan cookies, with one half dipped in chocolate. Goodness, I ate 2… and brought 2 back home to Michigan in my luggage. Those cookies are worth the price of admission!

Being a die-hard LSU Fan it was a little difficult walking in being surrounded by all of the Alabama pictures, but once I got over the initial shock of it, I was really able to enjoy the pulled porked sandwich topped with chow chow. It was quite tasty and delicious. I would go back for sure.

The name says it all, «Best Little Pork House in Alabama.» And it’s pretty darn good. I had the pulled pork sandwich with corn bread and greens and mac and cheese on the side. All very good, although the mac and cheese was not out of this world. What really made it was the sauce– perfectly spicy and sour and sweet. I will be back!

I’m not an expert on bbq but I do know that you can get better bbq in Birmingham than in NYC where I’m from. So with Unilocal’s help I hunted down this place while in town. I was staying downtown and there’s a Nick n’ Jim’s nearby but from the website it looks like a megachain and the menu looks a little gentrified so I took a ten minute drive to Full Moon. The original Full Moon is downtown but it’s not open for dinner. This is cafeteria style where you order the food at the counter then you go sit down and someone brings the food to you. Everything is plastic – plates and cutlery. The server behind the counter patiently described the difference between the types of bbq selections and I took what he told me is the best seller, the Classic Rib Plate which is 4 bones of spare ribs plus two sides and two slices of white bread for $ 11.99. I didn’t know if it would be enough for dinner but these are big bones. The sauce is tangy and sweet and there’s just a little too much on the plate but it didn’t hide the fact that the meat is tender enough to pull off the bone with a fork. I thoroughly enjoyed it and had no room for desert. I did grab a cookie from the counter – they sell cookies in packages but put the broken ones on a plate for customers to grab for free. Nice touch.
