Hunan Wok is a typical American-style Chinese restaurant that offers table service and take out. Despite the name there seems to be no focus on traditional Hunan dishes on the menu. It’s simply a mishmash of Americanized dishes. I ordered off of the lunch menu which comes with your choice of soup or egg roll. I had the hot and sour soup which was quite good and went with the Hunan Chicken. When the entrée came out, I almost laughed at the insanely large portion. Honestly, it was enough chicken, rice and vegetables for 2 – 3 people. The chicken was undercooked for my tastes, just past pink but not enough to allow the protein to firm up. I’m not inferring that it wasn’t safe to eat, it just wasn’t done enough for me so I focused on the vegetables and sauce and only a few bites of the chicken. The service was good and the lady running the store couldn’t have been nicer. Honestly, though, it’s just not my kind of place. I enjoy the authentic menu of Great Wall or Red Pearl which are just a few blocks away. However, If you like monster sized portions of americanized food, this will fit the bill. :)

It’s a decent place for some Chinese Take-Out. Now I can be a bit bias and particular as my father can cooks some great Asian cuisine. The egg rolls are definitely not for me. I am particular about the skin used and this is the same kind you see at practically all of these Chinese spots — bubbly, ultra greasy, and thick. No thank you! However, it does have a better taste than most. The skin is more of a personal preference. The won ton soup was fantastic! They gave me some soy sauce mixture in a cup which I put some into my soup. Tasted fresh and refreshing. Got it initially bc I was catching a cold or something and wanted something to help with my sinuses. The wontons also tasted fresh. Definitely will be getting again! I got the egg foo yung(vegetable) with steamed rice. New to egg foo yung but I would say it’s alright. Not anything I’ll order again. Way too much broccoli. The rice tasted like it does at any other Chinese spot.(If you’re looking for«sticky rice» you have a better chance getting it and cooking it yourself). The egg foo yung was good too. They gave me three giant parties which I thought was a lot but hey, better to get more than less right? My other half got the beef and broccoli and the shrimp lo mein. He stated that he was disappointed with the amount of shrimp he got in the lo mein. However he enjoyed the beef and broccoli. I tried both. I enjoyed the lo mein. It doesn’t bother me as much that there wasn’t a lot of shrimp. And the beef and broccoli was good for be most part. Meat was cut a little thick making it harder to chew but not a deal breaker. I think my other half liked the thicker cuts. The broccoli tasted fresh and wasn’t soggy which is good. The sauce was sorta creamy thick vs the brothy liquid sauce. A little pricey for portions based on my other half but to me I felt like I got my money’s worth for the items I ordered for myself. Depends on what you get or what meat etc. I will say I have eaten a lot worse and do not consider this spot to be as bad as some of those places. It’s definitely not anything special either… like its not bad but it won’t blow you away either. I can see us making repeat visits in the future since it’s not far from us which makes it convenient. Recommend others to check it out if your looking for some Chinese Take-Out. Everyone can have their own preference when it comes to Chinese Take out.

Amazingly fresh and affordably priced. I love egg rolls with fresh(non mushy) cabbage… They deliver every single time. I have yet to leave disappointed from this location… and I’m a fat boy.

Definitely not a good place to sit and eat but the portions are big, the food is cheap, and the service is fast. They deliver to dorms too.

I ordered the shrimp and broccoli with the sauce on side with steamed rice. It was an overall good experience! The broccoli was firm and very green, not mushy. For a lunch menu, I didn’t expect a lot of shrimp, but I was pleasantly surprised about the portion! I didn’t count but there were about 6 medium/large shrimp on the plate. My only complaint about the food was the rice wasn’t as fluffy as I prefer, but it was cooked through… Just didn’t taste fresh like everything else was. The service was fast and the waitress handled the large group I was with. I’ll be back!

It was hard for me to decide between 3 and 4 stars. 3 stars because it wasn’t mind blowing. I had the Kung pao chicken with white rice and was very happy about my choice. It didn’t blow me away, and didn’t make me want to pull my tongue out(haha). The employees were super awesome and very friendly. What makes this place worth it, the lunch menu price. $ 5.80 for rice, chicken, veggies and soup. Great deal! If you’re in the area and don’t want to spend more than 7 $ on lunch, go for HUNAN!

I am sick with sinus/head cold nonsense and went to Hunan after my yoga class for the healing power of Hot and Sour soup. I also decided to get a spring roll as it was only less than two bucks. I was impressed that the spring roll wasn’t greasy. The mushrooms in the soup weren’t mushy and the broth wasn’t slimy. All of that to say, everything was better than what I’ve had elsewhere. The employees were all polite, efficient and in good spirits despite the fact it was late at night. Thanks for the service :)

I had a one night stay in Birmingham. I needed a quick bite… It was fast. The sesame chicken soggy and all the breading fell off once the fork touched it. The rice was bland. Lastly, the lady servicing me was rude. She ignored my request for additional duck sauce because the tray was empty. She proceeded to give me 2 packets and wanted to charge me for more. Sauce is cheap and needed for this bland food. An unhappy traveler, I should of went to Zaxby’s…

This is one of our favorite places to eat Chinese food. They have a large menu and really good food. It’s better as take out unless you can handle the really LOUD ding dong of the door opening and closing over and over and over. My family can’t enjoy dining in as everyone seems to hold their ears the entire meal… So we get take out :)

The food was terrible quality and had a bad taste. It’s pitiful, I had a chef special general tso’s chicken. The chicken was substituted for Pigeon or some funky ass dark meat substance, definitely not chicken. The shrimp eggroll was not tasty or flavorful just tasted like 12 day of oil. The fried rice was more like white rice cooked with a splash of soy sauce, the vegetables in the rice looked and tasted like astronaut food. Im new to the area and 1st Chinese joint i came across and I needed delivery. I felt like it was a safe choice for $ 14 I got my head busted on some bunk Chinese food, now 5 hours later my stomach is hurting like food posion. Also they only give plastic utensils to certain delivery locations so beware. I would eat road kill before I eat this garbage again. I almost forgot; the driver called me when he arrived and asked me to come out and get it he stated he didn’t know which door to go too. WTF really f*** you and my delivery charge plus my $ 2 cash tip. Oh and the pic is random Chinese food I saw sitting out for a week or two lol!

This place has great food! Although, last time I went there I got yelled at by one of the women that works there. I called in a pickup order from a menu I found online for this place(The online menu and actual menu are completely different– I’m guessing they re-did it) They didn’t ask for a name over the phone so when I got there I had to describe what I ordered. I think it was partially a language barrier that she wasn’t understanding what I had but she got very mad at me and raised her voice quite a bit. I would still eat there, it was just a little too reminiscent of the soup nazi on seinfeld.

I go here all the time because to me, it’s one of those old-standby comfort food places. Large extensive menu: Their Ma Po Tofu is unique. It uses a variation of black bean sauce instead of hot pepper sauce, but it’s pretty tasty. My favorite soup is the Bean Curd and Vegetable soup. Too lazy or hot out to boil your own veggie broth? They throw large chunks of stirfry veggies and tofu into a clear brine base and this brings out all the veggie flavors. It’s also the cheapest soup on the menu. The curry chicken is good too. It’s made with yellow curry powder(Singapore-style), onions, and green peppers; definitely clears out your sinuses. Short wait — most elsewhere if you call or stop in, they will quote an average 20min or longer wait time. At Hunan Wok, the average wait time is 10−15min, no joke. Since I live nearby I can phone in my order and by the time I get there it will be ready for pickup. Large portion sizes. If you order one of the Chow Mei Fun dishes, they really pack it into the plastic boxes resulting in literally 2 lbs of food. Even the small fried rice orders are overflowing out of the carton. And if you’re not a fatty like me, one of the main entrees should be good for two meals. The downside is you might need to order an extra side of rice or one of the small fried rices. Ok prices, especially considering the portion sizes. The prices have gone up in the past couple of years, but here’s the protip: Vegetables are the cheapest base, and Pork is the cheapest meat. Chicken is next up on prices, and the beef and seafood remain premium. The potsticker dumplings(you get 8 per order) are tasty but sort of a ripoff(just remember to take yourself to Costcos next time and buy a big bag of frozen ones). Hours: they close at 10pm on weekdays and 10:30pm on weekends. A lot of nearby places are done by 9pm, including the food places in the same shopping center(firehouse subs, the wing place, papa murphy’s pizza, camp taco). Location: It’s next to retail establishments I like to frequent. So while I’m waiting for my order, I can run over to Publix to pickup some drinks and dessert, or walk over to the Gamestop and chat to the staff there about videogames. If you have pets at home, there is also a Pet Supplies Plus two doors down. If you just want to wait, then you can hang out on the bench in the restaurant and read one of those free indie papers. I don’t ever use their delivery service since I live 10min away so I can’t offer feedback on that, but from what I hear, it gets subpar reviews(limited area, long waits).

Nearly flavorless, thin sauce. Portion size is ok, and it is relatively inexpensive, but unless you’re starving to death, go elsewhere. Hell, even if you are starving to death go to one of the other restaurants within a tenth of a mile.
