SpringHill Suites Birmingham Downtown at UAB

Was worried when I saw previous reviews, but chose to stay here anyway due to the convenience of the location. Fortunately had no major issues. No problems with check-​in, but when we got to the room, the card key wouldn’t work even after going down and having reprogrammed. Front desk folks were very apologetic and managed to get maintenance there in less than 5 minutes. Fixed and no further problems.
Staff was friendly. The gym was a good size (looks like someone swiped their 25 and 30 lb dumbbells as I’ve seen at a lot of places). My Little Dudes found plenty to eat at the free breakfast and were happy about the pool. Friendly staff.

The only good thing I can say is the hotel is nice and they validate the parking for the garage next door.
I don’t know what the maids do, but it definitely isn’t cleaning the rooms. They replaced the towels and emptied the trash… That’s it. No made beds (including the pull out, which I intentionally left open to get clean sheets), no counters, no mirrors or anything else wiped down (used package of sweetener left on the counter spilled, still there –left to see if they would clean it up), no vacuuming.
I used the public restroom of the lobby… It was horrible. Trash, towels and hangers on the floors (which looked like they had been sprayed with some oily substance) no toilet paper in the stalls, no soap in the dispensers.
I would expect WAY more from a Marriott hotel! Will not be staying there again

I stayed in this hotel with my family for a week in September. I decided to help out and put $ 100 towards the bill without telling anyone. I notice in November that the hotel charged an additional $ 551 to my credit card, without my consent. I call and talk to the general manager of the hotel and he lied to me saying that the Visa holder (my step-​dad) told them to charge it to my name. When I called and talked to my parents about it they still had no idea I even paid anything. And also that they don’t even have a Visa card. I just don’t understand how it’s ok for someone to charge an account $ 551 without the card holders consent? And for the GM to start lying to the hotel guest instead of trying fix the problem. Not to mention we were never given the military discount we were guaranteed.

I was in town only for one evening, so I’m not sure about location. It seemed like there were places nearby to eat, possibly within walking distance. The hotel was good about providing tokens for free parking in the adjacent deck. The room was clean, which is the most important thing to me. The furnishings were dated, and the bathroom was tiny. The staff were pleasant and helpful, and they had a good continental breakfast. For the price, this hotel is a good value.

This was my first stay at this location. I usually like the amenities that Springhill Suites offer, but this location just fell short.
Let’s start from my arrival. The online booking was fine, as usual. Upon arriving at the hotel, You parking in the parking garage next to the hotel. The signage is adequate. The hotel charges you $ 10 per day for self parking, though if you exit the garage on your own, it’s only $ 2 cash. The hotel up-​charges.
When my buddy and I walked in to the front desk, the front desk manager (so her nametag indicated) took a phone call and motioned with her fingers at me to, I assume, hand her my ID and credit card, without even making eye contact or saying hi to me. I stood there until she was done with the call so I could be properly greeted and not just shooed along like the number I apparently was. She quickly processed my check-​in. I had another friend checking-​in to another room and I asked her if I could pay for his room with my Marriott points. She cancelled his room and added another room under my reservation. It wasn’t until later that I found out she only booked his room for one night, not two. Glad I caught it and got it changed.
The room was pleasant and comfortable. That’s the 2 stars I gave. The location is near some good restaurants and night life.
The next day we enjoyed the continental breakfast, compete with eggs, sausage, bagels, juice, etc. It was a reasonably nice, but was a crowded breakfast. We then left for a football game and when we arrived back that night, we found one bed to be mostly made up and the other bed just messily thrown together. To add, the used towels were gone, but not replaced. I called guest services for more towels. I showed the sloppy beds to the representative that showed up with our towels.
Bonus addition: it wasn’t until the next morning that I realized they didn’t replace the soap or shampoo, either. Boo.
The morning of my checkout, I planned to sleep in a little late, but I was awakened with the housekeeper opening my door at 9am. With her getting such an early start, I can’t imagine how she didn’t have time to replace towels, soap, shampoo, or make a bed properly.
The checkout experience was done on my phone. I decided it wasn’t best for me to see the front desk staff in my level of anger. The initial attitude at check-​in and overall housekeeping poor experience makes me not only not want to stay here again, but tell others not too, as well.

This hotel was selected because it is close to the venue of the event that I was attending. Also, I am a Marriott Rewards member. The price was moderate for hotels in this area. The lobby and dining area were beautiful. Breakfast was good. The intake staff were less than friendly. In fairness to the 4 of them, they were in processing a large party, which should be business as usual. Upon getting to my room I was met by a door that appeared to have been broken into by the pry marks on the door. The ottoman was busted/​deflated on one side (picture attached). The temperature was either cold or hot, no in between. This property is badly in need of an upgrade. The parking deck which is adjacent but not attached to the hotel was a bit scary at night. I will not stay at this property upon my return to Birmingham.

HORRIBLE! Not courteous too small for all what’s going on at the front desk/​bar/​dining/​check out/​jazz club! Skip this spot if your hotel experience matters. It’s like going back 430 years when visiting here.

I’ve never been to Birmingham before but this place wasn’t the way to start it off. Got into the airport and called for the shuttle. I was told that it wouldn’t be more than 10 minutes. I thought that was pretty good, so I went out and waited where I was told too. 20 minutes goes by and no shuttle, so I decide to call the hotel again. I was told it was on its way and should be there soon. 30 minutes goes by and I call again and get the same story. 40 minutes goes by and I’m told it’ll be pulling up any minute. Finally after 50 minutes of waiting while I’m getting into the cab the shuttle pulls up. I get in thinking it might have been busy out or a lot further to the hotel then I expected but after about an 8 minute ride I’m there. I mention the waiting problem to the guy at the front desk and tell him I would have gladly taken a cab if I knew I was going to have to wait and he said the airport is about 25 minutes away so it takes a while. Not sure what airport he was talking about because I just came from there and it wasn’t anymore than 8. So I get checked in and go to my room and there are 2 full size beds instead of a king. I call down to the he desk and request what had been reserved and am told that this is all they had but they did me a favor by not increasing my rate. Last time I checked you don’t generally get a rate increase after you’ve made a reservation and they don’t give you what you requested. So much for tonight. I hope Birmingham has a lot better to offer than this or I won’t be back. On a separate note I called Jimmy Johns to try and order food because it was the only place still open and got hung up on twice. So much for Southern Hospitality.
As far as the rooms go, they are pretty descent. Hopefully this place was just having an off night.

The hotel is nice and the room is clean. My issue is that I reserved a king bed and was given two double beds even though I only need one bed. The front desk person simply said we don’t have any king bed left.
Wifi at this hotel is terrible. Very slow.
I don’t even know why there are different statuses at Marriott properties for you don’t get anything special or different.

Very nice hotel — rooms are big enough, staff is very friendly and free wifi. Best thing about the hotel is the shuttle service that will take you anywhere (including to and from the airport) nearby. We had to grab a suit for a wedding and they took us, waited for us to buy the recommended an amazing BBQ restaurant.
Only negative I have is the bathroom is too small in my room.

Where to begin…
This place looks nice on the outside. However, my room is a sh1th0le.
I asked for a high floor… I got the second floor by the road.
The walls are paper thin, I can hear the old woman in the room next door.
I am pretty sure the carpet in this room has never been cleaned.
The couch is absolutely nasty.
If I had not arrived so late, I would be checking out and going somewhere else.
The management of this location should be ashamed.
Follow up after checking out.
Don’t tell them you have a car.
These jokers charge you 10.00 to use the parking deck next to their building.
It is a public parking deck… 2.00!
You do the math. It is your money.

Such sub par service that the room being decent doesn’t even make up for it.
We were going to be in town for a wedding, and without a car. I called a week ahead of time to make sure that we didn’t need to schedule an airport shuttle. The woman said, «Nope! Just call us when you land.» Okay. I know that the hotel is only about a 15 – 20 minute drive so that sounds about right.
Fast forward to that Saturday. We only had a few hours to explore Birmingham due to the wedding and our flight home on Sunday. We land and as we head to get the luggage, I call the hotel. It rings and rings and rings. And eventually the system hangs up on me. Uh… okay. I call again. It rings and rings and rings. No answer. For minutes on end. We now have our bag…
I try calling and choosing reservations, just to get a live body on the phone. He puts me on hold for minutes on end. He comes back and says that he’s in a different location (no problem) but he can’t get them to answer either. We now head outside to see if the shuttle is around, picking other people up. Nothing is there and after a few minutes I go back inside to ask for help from the concierge.
I explain to her what’s going on and she immediately picks up the phone to call. Same thing happens to her. Ring Ring Ring. no answer. She hangs up, searches for an alternate number and tries calling again. Old number. Meantime, I’m calling, my boyfriend is calling and concierge is now trying.
FINALLY. Concierge gets through and gives me the phone. I state that we need a shuttle, like 45 minutes ago. meanwhile, I get a text from my boyfriend that he got through and the shuttle is coming. She immediately puts me on hold. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Even the woman working concierge is tsking. She comes back on and states that the driver is picking up someone else so it’ll be longer to get to me. I inform her that the «other» is my boyfriend because we’ve been calling and calling with no response.
You’d think you’d get a sincere apology, right? Nope. No apology at all. It was, «Oh. Well it’s coming now.» HAH.
Now we wait. The shuttle finally arrives, helps load one bag, drives like he’s terrified of driving the entire way to the hotel… We get there and it’s early. I had requested early check in. The answer I got was, «Well the cleaning crew just got here so you can’t check in yet.»
So we check the bags. After she checks the bags I asked why the phone wasn’t answered for almost an hour earlier in the morning. The look I received was, «Are you seriously asking that?» as if I didn’t have the right to an explanation. The response I received was, «Well we had a large check out and I can only deal with the people in front of me and those who make it through the phone.» OH. So what you’re really saying is that my patronage is not worth your time. The fact that I almost exclusively stay in Marriott properties means jack to you. That I am not a valued guest.
Had we been staying in Birmingham longer than one night I would cancelled and found a different hotel.
When we checked in, the woman taking care of us was nice and pleasant. We received a gift bag, which I expected. When we got up to the room, we realized that the bag wasn’t for us. It was the wrong wedding. My boyfriend went back downstairs to get the right one. The right one had our names in BIG lettering on the side. Attention to detail is lacking in this hotel.
While getting ready we called down for more towels… They never arrived. At this point, this is the type of service we expect. The next day when we went to check out we purposely left tons of time to make sure that they got the shuttle for us in time to make our flight.
I will never again stay in this hotel and will not recommend it to anyone going to Birmingham. Overhaul needed along with proper and rigorous training.

First the bar is too close to the check in desk. I asked the bartender a question about finding a cart to bring bags into the hotel and she ignored me. Totally rude and lacks customer service. In addition, the carpet in our room was so filthy and needs to be steam cleaned. We were all wearing white socks around the room and I noticed all our socks looked like we have been walking in pure dirt. It was not all negative though while at this hotel. Our son was sick and the did come fast and change the sheets he threw up on the bed and checked a couple of times to make sure everything was good with us. It’s up in the air if I would ever come back to this hotel.

I visited Bham for the Steel City Jazz Fest and stayed at Springhill Suites by Marriott. My stay was quite nice. Check-​in was quick and easy even though it was busy (because of others in town for the festival). The staff was attentive & friendly. The rooms are large and I especially appreciate the fact that they had mini-​fridges & microwaves.
I plan to stay here every time I visit Bham.

Platinum marriott status. They don’t really do anything to acknowledge marriott status here (front desk doesn’t even acknowledge at check in for the last two weeks I’ve been here). That being said, room is great for a low rate. Location is great for downtown. Breakfast buffet gets a little crazy, but they offer some nice options I was pretty pumped that they had Nutella! Parking is in a separate garage, but they validate and it’s generally not an issue. Staff is pretty friendly. One flaw — I left something here in my first week and I tried speaking with the front desk about it. They said the only way I could check to see if it was found was if I personally called and talked to house keeping. They didn’t even offer to look into it for me. Personally, I found the fact that they couldn’t even take a message pretty sub-​par, especially for an guest with Marriott status. Overall, good value, location and room quality. Just lacking in certain service aspects I would of expected. Also, my room key stopped working some random Tuesday. Not a huge deal, but definitely an inconvenience.

This hotel was horrible. They never gave us towels, were understaffed, and there breakfast was terrible. Never stay here!

I reserved a couple of rooms for a business related trip. It was my first time to stay at this location, and will definitely be my new first choice when next staying in Birmingham. The room were spacious and well designed. Beds and bedding were wonderful and then the included breakfast in the morning was fantastic. I loved the way the dishes were in the cabinets and that there was long table seating available. Definitely a great stay.
Worth noting: If you Google map it, and get the street-​view, you’ll see the signage of the previous owners which threw me off. Google’s fault, not Marriott’s.

The first thing I thought as I entered my room was, «Wow, this room is spacious!»
I was not expecting a large room. It is bigger than some Manhattan apartments. :)
The staff was consistently helpful from getting directions to the airport, to tending to necessary maintenance in the room.
The staff was helpful in terms of giving more information on the local area.
The food was okay but the fact that the staff exercised good listening skills and were helpful goes a long way.

Overall the hotel was nice. One of the things I was not too happy about was the fact that it had a European style door to the shower. Which means that it was half of a glass door with the other half being open to the rest of the bathroom. I was getting water everywhere. Another thing was that there wasn’t a nightly reception during the evenings like other Springhill Suites I’ve stayed.
On a positive note, the rooms were very spacious and had what seemed to be 42 inch flat screens and digital channels. I would stay here again.

Large spacious rooms that are well-​decorated and clean. Modern furnishings, large pivoting flat screen TV, great water pressure in the shower, and surprisingly good color coordination for the painted walls in the room.
You have to grab tokens from the front desk in order to get out of the parking garage. The staff at the front desk were so genial and provided consistent service and great conversation! Had no issues with the Wi-​Fi. The hotel was nice and quiet and in a great location. We had a very pleasant stay.
They also had complimentary Chupa-​Chups lollipops in a bowl at the reception desk!
