I LOVE Himalayan Curry Café. The menu is simple, the food is delicious and reasonably priced, and the owners are extremely nice. I eat here all the time– it’s my favorite restaurant in Blacksburg. Eating here is as warm and inviting as eating a home-cooked meal.

A decent student type of place. The food was okay, but not great. The meat was okay but not great. Very much geared toward the students in the area.

I gave this place a very poor rating when I first visited, but I think this is the first time a restaurant has actually made me feel guilty enough to write a brand new review. I had the chicken curry my first visit, it was, and still is not very impressive. I immediately dismissed the place as bad and continued on with my life. The problem was that every week I had to pass the place in order to access the parking garage. Each time I passed my opinion of the place began to change. The aroma of the ginger and curry spices flowed out onto the sidewalk, the perfect balance of strong but not too overpowering. The restaurant itself was amazing well kept with beautiful authentic décor. And the owners, oh how awful I felt when the owners said hello to me every single time I passed. And thus I gave the place a second chance, and instead of looking at the restaurant as food critic, I looked at the feeling the place truly gave me, a feeling of home. I decided to try the beef and vegetable curry, the lentil soup, and finished with the kheer. While the food wasn’t perfect, it was genuine, it had all the elements that made good south asian food. Cheap, comforting and simple. This place IS one of the best spots in Blacksburg and has definitely made a loyal customer out of me

Oh the spicy pork curry… best thing to eat ever. Rainy day? Post break ups? Test stress? Hungry? You can eat them any time and they’ll taste like the essence of comfort. Ate here once a week all last year, though a little sour they raised the price up by a whole dollar… still too tasty and cheap to past up though, plus now they add more meat! Pretty much the best, freshly made dinner option in the b-burg

Large portions, really inexpensive, ready in a flashy. Absolutely delicious. This is Nepalese seasoning on NC vegetables. I wish they were closer to me.

The food here is pretty good! They serve really large quantities and the prices are really low! You do get the food in foam plates and take out boxes but you pay for what you get. The owners are always here and they’re really friendly!

Great food and the amount is good for the price you pay, especially if you do take out. The service is splendid-had the cashier ask me if I needed water while i was eating.

This place is phenomenal, for the price or otherwise. Each of the curries is tailored to the meat(or lack thereof). The sweet and spicy pork is probably my favorite, a medium-brown curry with loads of flavor, neither too sweet nor especially spicy(the spice can easily be increased). The chicken is similar, but not spicy. The beef is a darker curry, sometimes reminiscent of an especially good gravy. The veggie is probably the most distinctive of the four, although it reminds me of a basic(but excellent) Indian-style yellow curry. The kheer is also excellent, and very refreshing for something sweet. Couple of hints: each of the tables has an orange-pink sauce. He’s got a spicy version of this behind the counter, if you ask, which seems to be designed to go with the pork. It’s awesome, and I get it every time. Also, the portions are more than adequate(and totally fair for the price), but for those who might want more meat, he will gladly give you more for under $ 2. The service is informal(cafeteria-style), but the tables and floors are clean and look nice. This is a great place to take a date, so long as your date puts food above«ambience»(all the best dates will). This rapidly became my absolute favorite restaurant in Blacksburg, and given the price and quality, I eat here several times a week. Highly recommended.

You cannot find better food at this price. The place is quiet and neat. I will recommend their spicy pork curry.

Simple but incredibly bland. However, it’s inexpensive and prepared so you get your food immediately. If you want any spice, ask for a cup of extra spicy sauce. It definitely doesn’t deserve a 5-star rating, but it’s fast, cheap, and easy.

This restaurant is located almost right next to Panera. It must have been really nerve wrecking opening this place up right next to Panera, but it sure has paid off! This place is neat and serves delicious food… for only about $ 5 ~ $ 6! The clerks are friendly, and the place is always cleaned. I would definitely choose to eat here over Panera. The menu is pretty simple. It’s mainly curry with some other items that I never order. I’m sure the other items are pretty good too, but the curry is just unbelievably good for a $ 6 meal. They also give you lots of food. Make sure to go here with an empty stomach.

Well, add me to the long list of believers! While I can’t dispute west other reviewers have said(everyone has their own experience), I can say that this place is well deserving of 5 starts. This quaint little gem is located just behind Panera in the main shopping strip. Inside you’ll find a very simple menu, nicely decorated(although probably from what was here before), very clean restaurant. As others have said, the menu is basic — chicken, pork, beef, and veggie, with sides of lentil soup and keefer. The main courses are $ 5.50($ 6 for beef). I ordered the Pork Sweet Spicy Curry and was not disappointed. Huge serving, especially in r the price, lots of rice covered in a delicious sauce and about a dozen or so pieces of pork. Contrary to others experiences, my meal was very flavorful with a complex layering of spices. The owners are some of the most welcoming and friendly proprietors I’ve met and are quick to welcome and wish you well when you leave. Overall I can’t believe it took 6 months of living here to find this place. I’ll definitely be back soon!

One of the best places to eat in Town now. I eat here at least once a week. In the 6 months it’s been open, I have NEVER had a bad experience. Can’t speak for the kheer or lentil soup, but all of the curries are great. Good food, friendly owners and staff, inexpensive pricing. Can’t ask for much more! If you like it hot, ask for the spicy sauce.

Pretty good inexpensive hole in the wall with fancy sauce with pickled hot peppers. Google fancy sauce for the recipe.

Disclaimer: I am of south-Asian descent so I am rather acclimated to eating curry dishes. I might have higher standards than most of the customers at this place, hence why I found it bland. This place is perhaps good for a person who is attempting to dip their toes into the world of curry dishes. I ordered the pork curry dish to-go and was disappointed. For $ 6.12 after tax, I received only 6 – 7 small pieces of pork and a whole box-full of rice with the sauce. The sauce was a bit bland, flavor-wise. Another huge suggestion I have for the establishment is to switch their take-out styrofoam boxes to plastic ones, similar to Chinese take-out containers. The sauce leaked a little bit out of the box and into the plastic bag which resulted in an unwanted mess. 1 star off for the disappointing amount of meat and another for the inadequate take-out container. Not sure if I’ll be returning again, maybe to try other dishes because it is pretty affordable for a filling meal in Blacksburg.

I REALLY wanted to love this little restaurant and tried it because of the great Unilocal reviews. The food is good, but not great and certainly not worth a 5-star rating. Perhaps I was expecting too much, but after having really great curry in several Asian and Middle Eastern countries I know what I like and this wasn’t it. The food is simple, bland, and uninspired, but portions are generous and the price is low. I had the lentil soup and vegetable curry(Yes, I’m a crazy vegetarian) and both were ok – again, uninspired and bland. The restaurant is clean and the staff is friendly and efficient, but I won’t be returning.

My friends and I stopped by on our first night in town, and the Himalayan Curry Café is a true revelation and gem. It is modest in many ways — small storefront, simple menu, inexpensive prices, and a single proprietor. But once we tasted the curries, we were hooked for sure. We each tried a different selection(except the veggie), which was easy since there are only four different kinds to choose from. The pork was the best, in my opinion, but the chicken and beef were very tasty as well. They are all saucy and served with basmati rice on the side, and are made even better with hoisin or garlic hot sauce that is on the table. Even the lentil soup was amazingly delicious, and the next time I stop by I’ll have to try the cold Kheer(a sweet, chilled veggie mix). The best part is that everything was a straight $ 5.50, with the lentil soup and Kheer being $ 3.00. Did I mention this place was super cheap? I did about three times, but it’s worth another mention. We didn’t spend more than 8 bucks apiece and we were so full afterwards. I think this may become a go-to spot for us every time we head to Blacksburg.

Tried it for the first time today with the girlfriend and was pleasantly surprised! I got the Pork Sweet Spicy Curry and the Kheer while she got the Vegetable Curry and the Lentil Soup. The Staff was EXTREMELY friendly and kind enough to answer questions regarding the food(i.e. The vegetable curry, kheer, and lentil soup are indeed vegetarian friendly) For $ 5.50 a pop, they offer a generous helping of rice to curry ratio! I tried some of her vegetable curry and it was delicious. The Pork curry only had about 6 pieces of meat in my serving and the rest was just the curry itself, which was slightly disappointing. The meat was a little tough, but we went around 7:30pm(closes at 8:30pm) so that may be why? Like the other reviews have stated, this Tibetan curry is not as strong(aroma/spice wise) as a traditional Indian or Japanese curry, but still great none the less. My girlfriend really liked the soup, which had a very distinct taste of some seasoning(black mustard seeds?) that reminded me of tea. The Kheer was unexpectedly amazing! It is an Indian rice pudding that is just absolutely delicious. For only 3 dollars, you HAVE to give it a try at least once. Other notes to mention: The extra spicy sauce seems to be sriracha based, so we all know sriracha goes with everything. literally everything. So you can’t go wrong here. 4⁄5(for now at least due to the slightly dry pork/lack of pieces) but definitely will be back again(possibly at an earlier time of the day)

I’ve tried everything on the menu at Himalayan Curry Café. My advice is to go for the pork sweet spicy curry, try the lentil soup at least once, and don’t forget the kheer. Tibetan curry is less heavy than Indian curry(not as creamy) and spiced a bit differently. The chicken and beef curries here are rather bland, and the veggie curry is even more bland(and possibly made with just frozen vegetables). The lentil soup is great, but there is a sharp herbal flavor in the beginning that I still can’t figure out(perhaps it’s the black mustard seeds) and may not be to everyone’s taste. The kheer is always good, although some batches have more carrots than others(I prefer more cardamom). Something I learned by accident is that the curries taste better at night because(presumably) they’ve been simmering all day. It’s a working hypothesis anyway. The staff are super nice. They keep extra-spicy sauce behind the counter, if that’s your thing. I find the pork curry to have a perfect amount of ‘kick.’ It’s cheap, nutritious, and generously-portioned. Where else can you get a huge heap of fancy basmati rice as a part of a $ 5 meal?
