Cheapo is a serious misnomer. They are consistently priced higher than any other record shop I’ve visited. I regularly visit record stores in Chicago, Iowa City, Champaign-Urbana, and Minneapolis, and Cheapo is *always* at least a few dollars more expensive than anywhere else. Ugh. This week, I was record shopping in Minneapolis. I went to Treehouse Records, Electric Fetus, Down in the Valley, and Cheapo. Cheapo had everything priced between two and five dollars higher. Believe it or not, this applies to Chicago record stores too. Sure, they’re got a great selection, but so do Electric Fetus and Treehouse. I just don’t see any reason to shop at Cheapo. It’s not like I’m comparing them to Amazon or some huge retailer who can afford to sell at a steep discount. No. I’m comparing them to record stores in their own market.
