My wife and I have a Koi Pond that we had a water gardens place put in three years ago. Part of the package included two «Scarecrows» manufactured by Victoria BC based Contech Electronics Inc.; which, are an automatic motion/​heat sensing sprinkler that makes a noise and sends a hose-​force water jet at the intruder when the sensor picks it up. Neither raccoons nor herons or for that matter deer care to be squirted by a water cannon. This is a great and humane way to deal with outdoor pests whether they invade your pond or your garden and you can not only adjust the sensitivity, but also the spread.
Contech is about customer service. I just found out the other day if you have one of these scarecrows and it stops working like mine did, you can call them and they will give you a couple of things to try to fix the unit. That failing, they will send you ABSOLUTELY FREE, a simple repair kit that includes a solenoid (If the thing fails and it’s not a matter of cleaning the unit, this is usually what goes out). My scarecrow was going on three years in age and the warranty was for two years.
I replaced the solenoid unit with the free one Contech sent me (easy for anyone to do) and now it works like a charm. This saves me the $ 80.00 price tag for buying a brand new unit. I know for a fact Sky and other nurseries carry the Scarecrow. They use a 9V battery and hook up to your outdoor water spigot.
This is a great item and I’m going to sing Contech’s praises from now on.
