Recent business has brought me to Nebraska several times over the past few months and I had only heard vaguely about Runza a few times in passing. I finally decided to see what people were talking about. What is this«Runza» thing they were talking about. It turns out that what Runza«is» is delicious. Man, what a treat. I don’t usually review chain restaurants but this one was a little different. They have several varieties. I tried two of the plain(or original) with onion rings. They serve hamburgers, chili(seasonal) and ice cream. It’s a nice menu for fast food. For the uninformed a «runza» is a meat, cabbage and cheese filled loaf of bread. It is jam packed with flavor. I don’t want to tell you everything about it but you MUST experience one for yourself. My business brought me to Blair for a couple of days and I ended up eating there twice. These are so good that I ended up buying six more and putting them in the cooler in the back seat of my Nissan and taking them back to Minnesota with me to share. The restaurant seemed new to me and I asked someone working there if this was a new location. They told me that it wasn’t but it was severely damaged during a massive hailstorm last summer and received a major overhaul. I guess they also said all of the restaurants are unique, meaning that the menu might change from Runza-to-Runza as well. Great concept! Forget about Cornhusker football — Runza is the best thing out of Nebraska!

Grew up in Nebraska, grew up eating Runzas. Cafeteria at school even served them sometimes. Been back to Runza Drive-Inn(I think we used to call it Runza Hut) twice in the past 20 years, both times in Blair. Still love ‘em and will likely stop there again when I’m back in town, but the quality seems to be a bit… less than what I remember. I suppose this is natural for any restaurant that has been around for so many years. Menu is not as simple as it used to be either. Many more items and different versions of Runzas available. I still go with the simple Runza and fries.

This is one thing I miss about Blair. Tom Comstock and Eric Siemer worked there when it first opened up. Eric got fired and Tom went on to be a lawyer but I still go back home, eat a Runza, and remember the good old days.

I had my first Runza experience here in Blair while on a househunting marathon with my realtor… Polish(?) or Russian(?) — inspired fast food! Kind of like a pierogi, the sandwich is filled with ground seasoned meat and served warm!!! I will never eat any other kind of fast food ever again, I swear. Yummy! I have only had the plain sandwich, so cannot testify to other menu items.
