This was our first family vacation experience with Cruise America after 3 excellent experiences renting from El Monte over the years. This time El Monte didn’t have a rental location that was convenient(Connecticut), so we decided to try Cruise America. What a mistake. The rental agent was very pleasant and helpful, telling us that he was going to give us the newest, lowest-mileage unit he had(there were about a half dozen in the lot). The unit we got DID look like the best one he had, which means everything else was in even worse condition. Our vehicle was a 30′ cabover. It was dirty inside and out, the windshield had a large crack in it, it had over 70,000 miles on it, components were missing(hanging clothes bar in closet, racks in the refrigerator), broken(outlet hanging out of a wall, a/c vent diffuser non-functioning, shower door off its bottom track, septic and grey water valves leaked), the shower drain was clogged and it generally showed signs of heavy use and wear. Frankly, I wouldn’t have rented it if I had a choice, but we had nowhere else to go. Mechanically, it was excellent. The tires were nearly new, the engine oil had recently been changed and it drove well. And — as previously noted — the rental agent was easy to work with. Conceivably our experience was related to this specific dealer, or perhaps Cruise America keeps RV’s in their fleet longer than El Monte, but after renting very nice RV’s from El Monte on 3 occasions from 3 different locations with very consistent, pleasant outcomes, it would take a lot to convince me to try Cruise America again.
