I’ll start this review by saying I’m being generous by giving two stars. The first time I tried to make an appointment I was told that they were booked for the days that I wanted. I tried to book an appointment for a month later and was told that I would have to call back closer to the date. The second time I called during business hours, no one answered the phone. I left a voicemail with my contact information and did not receive a call back. I called a few days later and was finally able to make an appointment. I scheduled my appointment for late Saturday morning. I arrived ten minutes late and apologized to the receptionist for my tardiness. She simply told me «Oh don’t worry, you’re not late». Feeling relieved, I took my seat at the color bar. After about 15 minutes I was introduced to my stylist, Nia. She asked what I was having done, which was a deep condition and press. Another girl washed my hair and sat me under the dryer with the deep conditioning treatment for, I kid you not, an hour and a half. I’ve had deep conditioners before and I know they do not take that long. Finally my hair was rinsed and back under the hooded dryer I went for another hour. They ran two cycles on the hair dryer because my stylist wasn’t ready as she was busy with other clients. I sat under the dryer while it was off for an additional 30 minutes before Nia came to get me. Once I was seated in her chair she proceeded to put even more heat on my hair by beginning to blow dry it. Half way through this process she decided my hair still wasn’t dry enough and again sat me under the hooded dryer. I believe she was doing this because she had other clients she deemed more important. At this point I had been at the salon for about 3 and a half hours, longer than ever before for getting a simple press done. I was left to wait while I saw client, after client come and go, most of which had entered the salon long after me. I sat for another 30 minutes waiting for my stylist to finish with her many clients before she came to get me. Once I was deemed dry enough(for the second time), Nia continued blow drying my hair using a round brush. After she was done with the blow drying, she began flat ironing my hair. I let her know that my hair is prone to frizz and requires additional product to keep it in check. After about an hour in her chair(and a total time of almost 5 hours in the salon), she lets me know that there is still one more step left. I told her that I really needed to go as I had a prior engagement, but she and the salon owner told me it was in my best interest to do this step as it would make my hair less prone to frizz and humidity. At my request, Nia tried to speed up the process by wrapping my hair in a shower cap and using a hand dryer to set my hair for about 10 minutes. The results were lackluster, my hair still looked exactly the same, a frizzy mess. The owner told me I needed to sit under the hooded dryer to fully benefit from this step. I grudgingly agreed. Another half hour under the dryer and not much improvement at all. By this point, the salon was almost completely empty and here I still was, my hair looking a mess(I seriously could and have done a better job myself). I was unhappy with the way my hair looked and asked Nia if she could do something to fix it. The owner interjected and said she would fix it after she finished with the client she was working on. Another 20 minute wait, and I was finally seen by the owner. The owner, Kenya, sat me in her chair and proceeded to make my hair look like how it should have in the first place. She added more product and tamed the frizz. I was happy with the result, but unhappy with how long it took. There was no apology or explanation for why it took almost 7 hours to get my hair done. The icing on the cake was after I had finished, I went to iHop next door where I found a discount coupon for new clients. This aggravated me because as a new client, I feel I should have been given this discount without having to ask, especially since I was there so long. I will not be returning to this salon, and I would not recommend it to anyone I know. They should focus on customer service for all their clients, not just the ones they already know. I’m still very upset with how I was treated and hope that they would improve their customer service practices in the future.

So I moved to North Jersey a year ago and have been searching & searching for a salon. My hair is natural, I rarely straighten it, & I really care about its health/length etc. I had been going into NYC to get my hair done but was unhappy w the flat/stiff/oily hair I was left with. So I Googled and found Salon Femi! This salon is amazing! It is exactly the place I was looking for. My stylist left my hair straightened, but with body, movement, and bounce! I absolutely love it! She also did not pressure me to get a trim like most places do. All of the stylists were very friendly and you could tell by their own hair that they know what they’re doing! Highly recommend this place, I will absolutely be back. Oh and I had no wait, I was helped immediately :)

Finding a salon is very difficult but I think I have finally found my new salon. I really like this place. The owner Kenya is very professional, skilled, pleasant and cheerful. The salon is clean and has a nice ambiance and vibe. All of the stylist here are skilled and do hair well especially the stylist who are in the back row(I don’t know their names but one is a Hispanic lady and the other is a gentleman). Everyone is kind and seems to have great energy. Kenya is very knowledgeable about hair. I have been looking for a stylist that I can build a trusting hair relationship with so that one day I can tell them to try something new or different and actually trust them to do something I will like. Kenya is that person and it seems as if everyone in this salon has that same skill. The products they use are good and my hair usually last for 2 weeks. I have been to this salon twice and I plan to keep returning… The price isn’t cheap but it isn’t expensive either. Like the saying says you get what you pay for.

I was looking online for a salon for a specific style(which is extremely hard to do). So I looked on Unilocal and found this place with had great reviews and a video! So I booked a consultation and an appointment. My stylist Tianna was great. She gave me the style I wanted and even made it took better than the picture. I was going to a wedding so I wanted something different and she made sure my wishes were granted. This salon I would recommend to anyone of all different hair types. And I will be sure to return.

So I came to this salon based on the reviews. I’ve lived in NJ for 3 years now and I have always had a hit and miss with the salons servicing natural hair. I needed a style so I can go to a meeting the following week. I had cut my hair in early January after a bad faux locks installation. So 4 months later I came to Salon Femi. My crown and glory has different textures every where so I know it can be a challenge. Please note this is my experience I cannot say for others. I called 1 week before the date I need and the receptionist was pleasant on the phone. I told her I wanted a blow out and trim. Unfortunately when she repeated it to me she add a press and curl. She hung up before I could correct her but that’s okay I figured I could correct it when I got there. What was unexpected was the email reminder I received reconfirming my appointment two days before the appointment. I thought this was a great touch! This had me thinking I had made a great choice. I walked in the salon 5 minuets before my appointment. I checked with the receptionist and was introduced to my stylist Kim. Of course I googled her and found out she had worked at another natural salon staple in Jersey previously. I had made a mental note during my research to ask her since I wanted to try that salon out too. But unfortunately as I expound below I didn’t get a chance to ask. Kim asked me what I wanted and I told her I was looking for perhaps a blow out, trim and cornrow my hair. I figured I would keep the braids in and rock a braid out for my meeting. Kim informed me that she does natural hair but doesn’t do cornrows. In my head I had was like errrr? But whatever. She consulted with Kenya on what to do. Given I would be getting a trim she wasn’t sure if I could get cornrows due to length and suggested coils instead. I agreed. So Kim washed and conditioned and cut my hair. Yes I did say cut because frankly I don’t think she blew my hair out enough to TRIM it. But its whatever she gave me a shape which was fine. So by now your thinking why the 3 stars? In the 1hr that I was with Kim she didn’t speak to me ONCE other than to ask what I wanted! That is first for me. She didn’t try to learn about me and my hair to even give suggestions on what I could do with it in the future. She would call me over, but not by my name but rather by a hand gesture. Not Kosher. Granted I remembered her name and I introduced myself so I don’t think she forgot my name. EVEN if she did forget she could have asked. When she was done with me she passed me over to another stylist for my coils. Again no one called me by name just a gesture to where they wanted me. No one spoke to me. It was as if I was a mannequin there for practice. What killed me was when the young lady doing my coils decided to yell across the salon for Kenya. Granted Kenya couldn’t hear her but I could because she was yelling in my ear… Then she and another stylist proceed to talk about another client who happened to be in the salon, in front of me with profane language. Now the other stylist did reprimand her saying she shouldn’t curse in front of a client but then proceeded to say that the other client was annoying him too! SMH. I couldn’t. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I felt uncomfortable being in a place that should be a positive atmosphere. At that point I knew I would not be returning. Styling hair to me is an intimate thing between a stylist and the client. There is a trust that is placed there which extends to the salon itself. You will not make money from me and then proceed to gossip about me. Although I will say Kenya has a great attitude! I enjoyed watching her interactions with her clients and staff. One word of advise I would give is be conscious of those around you and how you speak around new clients. Unfortunately Salon Femi has lost a potential client in me. Oh by the way I think I’m allergic to whatever they used in my hair because later that night my scalp began to itch. The itching continued until I washed my hair and scalp two days later.

After moving to NJ my first stop was the hair salon! Came here from a friends recommendation. On my first impression the salon was very clean, comfortable, and staff greeted me as I walked in for my appointment. I thought I was coming in for track removal, cut, and color. Turns out I had a major hair disaster to sit through. Kenya and her staff member Tiana were so patient & positive and carefully worked with my situation. After spending 7 hours in the salon I walked out with unrelaxed hair that looked super healthy, smooth and shiny. I have to give major credit to Kenya and Tiana for never giving up and helping me through such a horrible experience. I will definitely return!
