The best beef jerky ever(except my home made). All flavors and the«HOT» is great.

I worked downtown and lived off State Street in NW Boise for several years, driving past Smoky Davis twice a day for a looonnnggg time. It wasn’t until I came upon their booth at a local trade show that I met them and finally decided to go in. May I say that our family TOTALLY missed out by not shopping here sooner! I’ve found the service to be excellent each visit. They know me and my typical order now, even if I haven’t been in for a month. The beef jerky is very good. I prefer the non-peppered and hubby likes peppered. Dad & I both loved the whole smoked trout and the wild sockeye salmon we tried. I regularly purchase their sliced deli meats as they are of better quality and lower price than the grocery store. And for the awesome bonus? They’re now on the Boise Weekly Card, so you can save 40% all the time. Even though we moved further west, we’ll still drive to Smoky Davis for their meaty goodness.

I have mixed feelings about SD. For years I used to take my birds there to get smoked. The price and quality were always stellar. Recently, I began buying my meat there. They sell a higher grade of choice meats at better prices than albertson’s. However, I picked up some steaks the other day that I believe had turned. Two of them had a slightly off smell to them and the other actually had a small piece that had turned green. What a disappointment because the meat is typically outstanding. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend it because of this incident. They do have an outstanding smoked pork that you can turn into pork and seeds(they sell seed and mustards too). The jerky is the saltiest and hard that I have ever tasted. I wouldn’t even try it… especially the hot jerky. It is inedible.

Two stars for the jerky and four stars for the rest of what they offer. Having a smoked meats business in town is great. The applewood bacon is to die for. I’ve also tried the smoked turkey, chicken, and trout, and they were all of high quality. I wasn’t as impressed with the regular deli meats offered, feeling that the taste level wasn’t up to snuff. Stick with the smoked stuff, and you may be happier. When I found out they had homemade jerky, I was excited. I get my jerky shipped in, either homemade from a friend or from the best jerky place I’ve ever been to in California. But I wanted to have a local place and buy local and not deal with shipping at all. But their jerky was a disappointment. A HUGE disappointment. As in a this-isn’t-any-better-than-what-I-can-get-at-a-market disappointment. It’s no one-star Slim Jim, but it’s not premium stuff either. The main gripe was that I found it terribly salty, to a point where it can just overpower the taste of the meat. Whatever brine they’re curing it in needs to be toned down a notch or five. And if it’s the same mixture that they use to smoke their other meats, then it just ain’t working with the jerky. I may buy some again someday to see if things have changed, but for now it’s back to the shipping option.

We wanted some good jerky for the miles of hiking planned in Glacier National Park(the second leg of our 3000 mile road trip) and this was an awesome choice. Our friends weren’t too confident in the recommendation(they couldn’t remember if this was the place they were thinking of or not), so we went with two safe choices: teriyaki beef and turkey. Our choices were validated when we heard the people behind the counter talking about how good the turkey jerky looked in a way that only real jerky connoisseurs could discuss jerky. The jerky was definitely like gold– but so tasty and worth every doubloon.
