A light on an island The Burnt Island Lighthouse sits on a five acre island in the south west side of the entrance of Boothbay Harbor. It was built back in 1821 and is the second oldest standing lighthouse in Maine. Since it is on an island it isn’t easy to view from the mainland and really requires a boat to get close to the light. The light is about 30 feet tall and sits 60 feet above sea level. It was automated in 1989 and the entire island is open to educators, schools and the public during certain times of the year for guided tours. The lighthouse and buildings were lovely restored to their 1950 look and the guides during the summer even dress in period clothing and really try to give the feeling of how the lighthouse and island looked and felt during that time. Unfortunately we got there too late in the year to actually go into the lighthouse or take the tour of the island but just being able see the light and the exposed bedrock it sits on was very cool. The little island certainly must have been an interesting place to be a lighthouse keeper, especially in the winter. It is so cool that Maine does such a wonderful job restoring and giving the public access to their great old lighthouses.
