Bil Mooney-McCoy

Bil is a skilled teacher and musical mentor. He is patient, friendly, and has a great approach that has been catered to my particular needs as a musician.

I took a few guitar lessons with Bil and the best thing about Bil is that he inspires you to love music through the way he teaches. It’s a rare gift. Also, he is multi-​talented (guitar, keyboard, vocals, etc…) and can cross-​over between so many styles in a seamless fashion. He is also just a very great guy and he will be really hard to book in a few years.

Having taken classical piano lessons for many years as a child, it was a wonderful experience to start taking lessons as an adult with someone that hears music rather than just reads notes on a sheet. I love that we don’t read any music at all, and that it’s all about describing sounds and purposes of chords. I’ve always wanted to know what feeling a certain chord or pairing of notes has, or why certain notes make me feel a certain way, and I didn’t know that I would find a teacher that could teach in those terms. I wanted to understand the feeling of the notes and how to create music, and so far Bil’s opening up my ears to a totally new world I didn’t know I could experience. The breadth of Bil’s music background in terms of musical genres is cool to be exposed to, and it’s fascinating to be able to ask how a certain set of chords can be made to sound more like blues or rock, and to have Bil explain exactly why while he talks me through how to actually play it on the piano.
