The Rachel. The only think I will ever order here because it’s everything a sandwich ought to be.

I like this place because it’s hilariously mediocre from the outside, then bangs out insane sandwiches once you get to know it. You’ll see the menu has misspelled words, and the name of it really couldn’t be any less creative — but don’t give up there. Their sandwiches are fantastic. Try the Rachael. Be careful when ordering your sizes — when they say«large» they really mean it.

I ordered a Western omelette. What came back was a fantabulous, loaded omelette with copious amounts of red pepper, onions, cheese, and ham, along with home fries and toast. One of the greatest breakfasts I’ve ever eaten out!

I don’t really like the place. The employees are so rude and mean. The women that make the sandwiches seem very dirty to me and they always mix my order and i never get what i want. Once i was with my friend they were talking in a foreign language and they were laughing. That was so rude. they always are doing something else while i order. They have other people in the back that keep them busy with other stuff. And i never get the sandwich that i want. The guy that is the cashier he always charged me differently for the same sandwich and he was all the time sad and not in good mood. I’m sorry but i would never recommend this place. They look dirty

Best sub place I’ve found in Boston hands down. Try the Northern Pacific with light mayo, no mustard. You will never want another sandwich ever again. Hell I ate nothing else for lunch for like a month. I still crave this place years after moving to SF.

This review is for the 26 Kingston Street Location… HOLYBARGAIN! I had a HUGE«Small» sandwich, the Rachel, which is Steamed Hot pastrami, Russian Dressing, swiss cheese and homemade coleslaw. $ 5.25… Did you hear that? $ 5.25! It SHOULD have been 2 meals, but I’m pregnant, and a pig, so I ate the whole damn thing. It was perfect. Sliced to order boars head. Why did I not know about this place sooner? will definitely be back

For most of my work day, I always look forward to getting lunch. It’s not too far from my office and the food are made on the spot and in your hands in a nick of time. I ordered many other subs, but the Rachel is by far the best. Their chips are GMO-free and with a large sub is still under 10 bucks. That’s probably by far one of my favorite. Kingston Street is very busy, even if you are not in a hurry, you probably will miss it. But it’s a great treasured spot in downtown Boston that guarantees your stomach will be full.

Least packed of all the lunch joints during the busy hour Roast beef sandwich for about 6 bucks, good quality(boars head) but nothing too impressive Wouldn’t come back here if al capones or any of the other good joints around downtown weren’t packed

Excellent accidental discovery! I would have never wandered past Sandwich Express if I hadn’t been obnoxiously early to work and decided to take a little walk around the block. Sandwich Express smelled great as I walked past it, and the plainness of the sign/exterior made me curious, knowing it had the potential to either be terrible, or a great spot for lunch. It’s definitely a little drab and plain on the inside, but the food is great — fresh, delicious, good sized, and with a good variety of options, all in the $ 6 to $ 8 range. I had a fantastic honey dijon wrap and I look forward to trying a panini or a hot sub next time. They have fresh, delicious Boar’s Head ingredients, always a good find for lunch. At 12:15 on a weekday the line wasn’t too bad — I was able to wait in line, get my sandwich, eat, and head out within 20 minutes.

Ohhhhh food baby, please stop kicking!!! How did I get this way? Fat, bloated, temperamental and all alone… Why do I do this to myself? It’s as if my memory has failed me from the very first food baby, one late summer’s eve in 1993. I had never had«a thing» for subs, really. Sure, the occasional sexy sandwich, buxom burger, or pretty pizza, but for whatever reason my prepubescent self never really thought to consider an over-sized hoagie as something that would appeal to me. It could very well be that at a staggering 70 pounds, the likelihood that I would be able to put one down was unfathomable. Enter a new friend, Mary Jane. She changed my world, turned it upside down and back up again. We would play and play and play so much that until then I really didn’t know what unreached levels of appetite my stomach would be able to manifest. It was right about this same time that Pizza Master came into my life, introducing me to this thing, this monstrosity of a sandwich called a large Italian cold cut sub. Life would never be the same… Once in a while, I get nostalgic. I crave that same rush I got the first time. I crave being born again and praying to my god with an emphatic devotion that is tantamount to a basehead needing a fix. I call the doctor, he knows my number by heart, and it goes to voicemail… again. Surely someone can save me in this moment of need, images of my time with Mary Jane makes me weak, and craving what we shared together. Sandwich Express, you hot dime piece… have been so good to me. What, with your Boar’s Head cold cuts and soft, deliciously baked bread. You even know that mayo and I had a falling out long ago and you don’t even ask about her. I appreciate that. Even in my moment of weakness you could not do so much as to kick me when I’m down, instead at $ 6 for large Italian, you’re seen as if you’re giving me a break. I love your smile and your warm embrace. I love the way you make me feel and the way i get giddy before i come to see you, and if Mary Jane were here today, I’m sure she’d share in your delight… God, I miss her, but with you in my life, you make moving on not so bad.

Went here a few years ago, and had a chicken cutlet. It was a little soggy/oily, but tasty. If I’m in the area, I’ll check out some more sandwiches…

Pretty affordable sandwiches, which are decent but the service was not amazing during any of my attempts here. There are better options nearby with a lot less attitude.

I ordered the grilled eggplant wrap with mozzarella, tomato, and basil. There wasn’t really any basil in the sandwich, and the grilled eggplant was just too salty. I threw out the sandwich after a few bites. The wrap would have tasted better had it been grilled. They’re probably better with their meatier options…

Looking for a cheap sandwich in Boston? For under 7 bucks you can get a large sub or wrap guaranteed to leave you satisfied w/a full belly! I wasnt even aware this place existed until I noticed another set of doors in the lobby of the building I work in. Wasnt sure where those doors lead, so I figured, hey why not take a peek… and BEHOLD a sandwich shop!!! I have never tried their breakfast but I think its worth a shot after reading the previous reviews. I have only been working in the city for a few months and have been trying to eat at a new place every day, which I still havent done, but have already had lunch at Sandwich Express 3 times. They carry only boars head deli meats and cheeses, and I will say that the menu has a pretty large variety of choices… especially if you have no idea what you want. They have small and large sized subs and wraps… and a salad bar that is sold by the pound. The roast beef is great and cooked just right. They seem to have a thing for cole slaw and russian dressing, but thats fine with me… and the bread is always soft and fresh, portions good sized. The ladies behind the counter are friendly, but not any more than they have to be in order to get the job done. What I really like is that you can go into this place right smack in the middle of the lunch time rush, and never really have to wait in much of a line for a yummy, cheap sandwich. They also carry a decent drink selection of canned soda, snapple, juices and waters. If you want a cheap, messy, delicious cold cut sandwich, try em out!

Can’t believe I’m just reviewing this. Have been going here for over a year since moving to boston as it is right down the street from where I work. The sandwiches are good, nothing that will blow you away but good for a quick fix. My favorite part about it is that it is affectionately know where i work as «the sandwhich nazi». Seinfeld fans get the reference. The people who work at sandwich express(in contrast with the soup nazi) are actually extremely polite and lovely, but its the ordering process that is so reminiscent. Know what you want when you get to the counter, order in a quick and timely manner, and move speedily down to the register where they likely already have you rung up and are shoving the bag of food at you and expecting you to get the hell out of the way. Worth checking it out for the experience of ordering if nothing else. And oh yeah the food is good and cheap.

Great breakfast menu here — sandwiches, eggs, homefries… almost everything except pancakes and french toast(I think). Don’t come here expecting a bunch of Southern hospitality from the ice queens who work here — the Gashers will make you a good brekky sango but that don’t mean they have to smile while they do it! Lunch is pretty good — this place always has a decent loyal crowd in here at that hour. Beware the salad bar — it’s pay by the pound — that shit piles up and before you know it you’ve got a $ 10 salad on your hands.

I stumble accross this place and it a great find. Very low key and not to busy. They accept all credit cards and have seating which is a huge plus. I got the NY Central Sandwich which consists of Corned Beef, Rumanian Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkrat, Horseradish and Mustard. They meat was hot and very tasty. The mustard and Horseradish was the perfect match. The Sauerkrat was overflowing the fresh Sub Roll. The portions are Huge. The large sub can defiantly feed a family of 4. Around $ 6 for a large, you defiantly get your moneys Worth, I would suggest sticking with a small unless you just ran a marathon. All of the Sandwichs are made with Boars Head Deli meats. Not to many Tasty Treats. Small seating area with non-descript tables. Drink selection is pretty poor. Can Soda’s, Snapple and Water. That is the one negative. The service is very quick and polite. They are not super busy so you won’t be fighting in Lines.

Sandwich Express offers fairly good bang for the buck. I’ve tried a variety of their sandwiches, but I have been avoiding the specialty sub filled with chicken salad and cranberry sauce despite liking it for health reasons. They really pack the mayo-based salads with that cholesterol and calorie laden condiment. The subs are fairly packed, not stuffed to the gills, but a decent balance. It isn’t going to fall apart on you and you aren’t going to need to squeeze the sandwich to take a bite, but still filling. It’s really hard to quantify the quality of the food since it is simple Boar’s Head deli cuts, but it’s easier to look at how much they give you and the service. I’d occasionally order their spicy meatloaf wrap, eating half at a time. The meatloaf is fairly dry on the outside, but moist within. I do not enjoy their chowder/stews that much, seemingly too thickened with flour/starch. The breads here are softer and last in the fridge longer than the ones at Capone’s. The pickles are passable, being stronger than ‘mild’ in flavor, but a little soggier than other delis I frequent. In all, it’s a sandwich place in downtown that does not skimp and is a place to go when you have a craving for a simple cold-cut sandwich. The service is brisk and systematic, the sometimes intimidating line moving faster than you’d suspect. I have yet to get an order botched. Even when the line hits the door, I’m in and out within 10 minutes.

Boar’s Head deli meat, who knew!?! It’s fantastic! This is the only place in Boston-and-surrounding-areas where I have yet to experience an Italian sub comparable to my own! It is also the only place downtown that I know of who serves up a mean breakfast sandwich on pumpernickel, mmm, mmm! Well they serve it up on a lot of other things too, don’t get me wrong! I am not a fan of the hot subs though, no big whoop… Although the staff is all business(and very good at that), they do smile if I smile — and I always smile, so I probably stand-out at the weirdo grinning girl. This is probably true of a few places now that I think of it! I prefer to see people as shy rather than unfriendly. Janis Joplin wore rose-tinted glasses for a reason and I concur! I also agree with Brian B. on a lot of points(though I can tell his ego doesn’t need the stroking), namely the pickle situation, pre-pickle update. Even the new ones are never a crisp as I would like. Oh yes, who knew I could enjoy Dirty potato chips being a Kettle girl myself… This is the kind of place I feel like I am in-the-know when it comes to local lunches! You should be in-the-know too, check it out!

Along with Russ before me, I’d have never gone in if it wasn’t a 2 minute walk from my job. I ordered a «Big Wess» wrap, basically a Turkey BLT. Now, when you think of a wrap, you think lite, watching your diet, maybe even a little snack. Now this thing was HUGE! It was this big wrap you had to hold with two hands. Definitely a belly-filler! And for $ 5.70? Beats Quizno’s. They didn’t skimp on the turkey, and the turkey was fresh and great since they cut their meats up right there. Generous on veggies and everything else. I think the only thing holding me back from 5 stars is they could have been more social. The service was very quiet, cold, and strictly-business. Gooooood good place here though. Kicks Subway’s arse all over the sidewalk and you’ll leave feeling good. *Edit: Lowered a star because their heated meat sandwiches are kinda crappy. Meatball, meatloaf, and buffalo chicken sandwiches were all kind of wet and soggy.
