Had a friend in town visiting from DC and we stumbled across this gem of a restauraunt. Our server Jackie was simply amazing, even though the restauraunt was super busy she still stopped by our table and made us feel so comfortable with her. Very attentive, and always with a smile. The foods was superb — loved the szechuan popcorn and the drink menu is OUTOFTHISWORLD. I highly recommend the Artificer or the Dreadknot drinks — so tasty :) Salmon ceviche was delicious and so was the Parmesan Haddock. Definitely come check this place out!

Had a nice Thursday evening and meal at Sixth Gear. My meal was their Huli Huli chicken. Its presentation and taste was wonderful. Had more than I could eat at a good price. The atmosphere was friendly and I was even greated by the owner at my table, that doesn’t happen very often. Kudos to you, I’ll be back!

Cool, unique great service! I wasn’t expecting what we got-which was inventive cuisine and a unique use of ingredients-we will definitely be back next time we’re in Boston!

This place is very close to my apartment so I really wanted it to be good but it was a bit disappointing, especially after we waited so long for it to open. The interior looks nice and the service was good but the menu was all over the place. We started with the salmon ceviche with homemade wonton chips that were really good. The ceviche was a little heavy on the vinegar but wasn’t bad. The bbq pulled pork buns with apple slaw were delicious but the cubano was a little dry. If they made some menu changes, I’d like to try it again.

Such a great menu — something for everything, no matter what you’re in the mood for! The brie chips, the corn croquettes, both flatbreads, the giant taco, I could go on and on… Been many times and never disappoints!

We went here on a Friday night and it was easy to get a table for dinner. Our server was great. The food… just average, which is disappointing for Southie where there are so many other better options to get a delicious meal. For starters we had the Brie Chips and the Sunshine Caprese. Both were just okay. They were not very flavorful and the chips were greasy. We had the iron pressed chicken with cilantro risotto and the 3 Little Pigs Flatbread for mains. The chicken was actually really tasty and the best dish we had all night. The flatbread was very chewy and had too much cheese. Overall, I don’t think we will be back here and will stick with the excellent restaurants we have on the west side of Southie.

Dined here tonight and Sixth Gear is officially one of my favorite burgers in Boston. Perfectly cooked homemade beef patty, brioche bun, house pickles, and… Béarnaise sauce??? Also, the fries are even made in house(no one does this anymore). We can’t wait to go back. This place is a hidden gem.

Came here on a Friday night for dinner and for my second visit to Sixth Gear. While my first visit was uneventful(for better or for worse), this second disaster of a visit will keep me from coming back anytime soon. Our server couldn’t have been nicer and was prompt with our drinks. Our appetizer, the Brie and fig plate, was pretty simple and nothing special — I serve Brie and fig jam at home all the time, except with more Brie and fig… However, it was the disaster with our entrees that will keep me from coming back. My boyfriend ordered the chicken tenders and I ordered the Bully burger medium rare. First try: we got sliders and a burger cooked well done. We let the wait staff know, cordial apologies are made, and the entrees corrected. Except they weren’t. My boyfriend got the chicken tenders(not tender though — crusty and hard as rocks) after a couple minutes and after waiting a bit longer, I got my burger. Well done again — not a sign of pink, just fully cooked patty. A bit more agitated and hungry, I let the wait staff know again. More apologies and a glass of wine on the house(I asked for it, and my very nice server accommodated). Then the chef came out because he wanted to make sure we were on the«same page about what medium rare meant» as if he hadn’t seen the last two failures — maybe he hadn’t??? At this point, I am much more irritated and mention there was no red center at all and that what medium rare means to me — not a well done brown center. Third burger comes out — well done. Which means we’re done. Also the wait staff is done too because no one tries to correct it a third time. I scarf down some of the burger because I’m starving, and we leave never to return again.

Tried this again for dinner. Walked in and there was a strong sewage/toilet smell in the entry way. Thankfully not in the restaurant itself. Appetizers included bacon wrapped dates and potato croquette. Average. Friends salmon entrée was ok. I had the Cubano sandwich after reading the reviews, but the pork loin was ¾ fat. Not good.

yet another new american addition to southie. they have a good amount of vegan/vegetarian friendly options here surprisingly. bonus: they serve local downeast cider here and give out free bacon butter beer popcorn! the corn croquettes really caught my eye on the menu – their take on mexican street corn. highly recommend their pulled pork sliders – the buns are pillow/fluffy cloud-like!!! love love love that their burger comes with both sweet & normal potato fries. perfect for the indecisive/sweet & savory feigns like me their winter squash soup is served in actual squash! and their crème brûlée comes with a cookie so it makes it fun to eat. would also love to commend them for their use of yam leaf(sweet potato greens) and fig in their chicken dish(ahh sweet & savory!!). i wanna come here for sunday brunch cuz apparently that’s what they’re known for. would also love to check out their grand taco which is served with avocado salad and apparently an oversized green onion shell. curious to see what that’s like!

When you think about a local neighborhood restaurant and bar, your mind imagines a place like this! The staff is super friendly and the food and service are outstanding. Top that off with a warm and home-like feeling and you have this establishment. Sunday brunch is a specialty, but their bar apps and regular menu are also inspiring. Visit this new(January 2016) spot in South Boston for a casual, yet upscale, experience.

Save your money, Tasty Burgers is right down the street! We went there on 3/18//16. I ordered a glass of Malbec(good) and he ordered cider beer(good). For table snack, they offered complimentary Bacon Popcorn with Beer Butter that they pour over when they got to our table. It was good at first, however as we started to eat a little more the popcorn got soggy from the butter and bacon. We ordered the Salmon Ceviche($ 8) for appetizer. It comes with homemade chips, which was pretty delicious. I’m not an expert about Ceviche, but I do believe you are not supposed to cook the Salmon. The Salmon cooks itself in the lime right? He ordered the Bully Burger($ 16) medium rare with a side order of Sweet potato fries and French fries. I took a bite of the burger and it came out to be medium well with no excitement tastes to it. The fries were burnt. I was not even able to bite down on it. Like I said, Tasty Burger is right down the street. I ordered the Chinese Pulled Pork Buns($ 12). It came with 3 small sliders with pickled carrot and radish. It had no flavor to it. I was only able to eat one and a half but left out all the buns. We will not be coming back here…

We came here the other night for some casual grub after I had a hankering for visiting my my ol’ hood around my alma mater(UMASS Boston). There were quite a few people at the bar, but not many people having dinner, which wasn’t really surprising for the hour. What we had: Salmon ceviche Yam Salad Cubano(sandwich) + a few adult beverages The salmon ceviche was… good. It’s served with wonton chips. Alone, each of these are amazing, but together the sodium level basically equates to your mouth being awash in crunchy delights of the sea. So we ate the ceviche with a fork– easy fix; and in that regard it was good. The salmon tasted fresh, and basically lived up to what I was expecting at a place in Southie. The Yam salad– interesting. I don’t know that I would have gone with strips of sweet potato(similar to the cut found in fries), but that’s what was here. Side note: yam is sweet potato for Americans… yes, there are very minor differences, but the flavor profile is the same. The dressing was really what made it: tangy, complimentary, light. The sandwich… well…for me 2 stars, for my dining companion 5 stars. So an average of 3.5? The smoked flavor on the ham was overpowering; a little goes a long way with the smoke flavor. I think that one of two things happened– the chef left it in the smoker for too long, or used liquid smoke in the marinade in addition to utilizing the smoker. Buuuut, like I said, my friend liked it, so there you go. They put an interesting cilantro dressing on the fries, which I LOVED. That cilantro flavor is not hidden! It complimented the jalapeño mayo and smoked ham flavor, and in that respect, I thought the plate was very well put together. Drinks: One word: Justin. Yes. I love to let bartenders and chefs use their creative discretion, and I’m always delighted when I get something not only original, but well made. I told him what I liked and he delivered. Rest assured, your taste buds will be in good hands if you are headed to Sixth Gear to imbibe(especially for cocktails). The drinks, convo, ambience, food… Sixth Gate is a gem in southie, and I’d go out of my way to come there again.

A date and I visited Sixth Gear on a Thursday night. Perhaps I should have given pause when I called to ask if a reservation was necessary and the hostess said«oh, there’s never a wait.» I wanted to like it because there’s no middle ground between all the new trendy places opening in Southie(Loco, Coppersmith, Capo, Worden Hall), and the long time neighborhood sports bars. I wanted it to be like, a hidden hidey-hole gem. It’s a new establishment, granted, but the waitress was not useful at all. My date asked for a beer recommendation and she couldn’t muster up ANY feedback. She instead suggested a cider(?!), and he was a good sport and went for it. My first beer choice was not available. We ordered the Salty Sweet small plate(among others), which sounded great but was awful. When she came by to ask how things were and we expressed our dislike, her response was«yeah, I know, I’m sorry,» or something to that effect. A good waitperson will tactfully steer people away from lesser menu items if they’re hearing consistent negative feedback. It was way too salty, and smelled like a box of Stovetop stuffing(not in a good way). The flavors of pear and goat cheese were lost entirely. The salad we chose to split was the best of the three items we ordered. The pork sliders were unremarkable. I’d go back for a drink and a quiet atmosphere, but not for food. Not yet, anyway.

I can only speak to my 1 and only dinner experience with my wife and two young children which was underwhelming. See Below… Positives: — Cozy dining room — Friendly waitress — Decent tunes — Unpretentious Needs Improvement — Not great value — i.e. Most entrees are $ 20+ where as most of Lincoln Tavern’s Entrees are less than $ 20. We had the two Chicken dishes which were not as good as Lincoln’s chicken dishes in our opinion. Maybe we needed to try something other than chicken on the menu but the waitress recommended Iron Pressed Chicken as one of their best entrée. — Slow… Waited about 25 minutes for our first dish to come out(with 2&6 yr old)…It was chicken fingers and sweet potatoes fries(run of the mill fired frozen food)… The rest of the dishes came out separately roughly 2 – 5 minutes apart. — Fig chicken was decent but not worth the price — Risotto was cold. Iron pressed chicken was decent but not worth the price. — Chocolate Soufflé — Mediocre. Consistency of pudding. Warm on the outside & ice cold in the middle. In summary, They really need to work on improving the kitchen.

I personally love this place, I have been here 4 times so far and keep coming back. The ambiance is charming and the bartender Justin is super friendly. He recommended the pulled pork sliders and the corn fritters which were both really good!

After being vacant for more than a year, its nice to have a restaurant back in this space. The 6th gear concept is cool and offers a nice alternative to the grimy meat market scene on Broadway(BBG/playwright). 6th gear took advantage of much of the structure of the previous establishment, and added details in the steampunk style including a gorgeous bar. However some decorations are more«home goods» than steam punk, and my dining companion nearly skewered his scalp on the fancy molding next to out table. Right now, some of the staff is still learning how to run a restaurant. At 5pm, the host sat my party(including toddler/high chair) immediately next to the only other party in the restaurant — a couple enjoying a quiet meal(uhhh sorrry!) Our waitress was quite slow, both in comprehending the order and serving it, failed to ask if the food was OK(it was not), and charged us for the next table’s drinks(later fixed). The bigger issue is that the cook staff is also still new. Half of my corn croquettes were wet in the middle, and my salad had such a light dressing that it tasted like nothing. 2 companions had variably cooked chicken, and neither had any figs, which were described on the menu. Easy stuff to fix, but the cooks have to be invested in QI… so we will see how things shake out. Still the menu is interesting and I like the options for small, medium and entrée sized plates. Can’t recommend 6th gear yet! Hope they keep working to improve the experience.

We came here for a friend’s birthday on a Saturday. As others have mentioned, it’s new and they’ve got some kinks to work through. We had a reservation at 7:30 but weren’t seated until 8:15. The menu was promising but we weren’t wowed by the food– everything came out lukewarm/cold. The portions were also smaller than expected. Drinks were great though and the bartenders did a good job despite the crowd at the bar. I would give it another shot after they’ve had some time to work through their service/kitchen issues.

Very promising addition to Southie. We went to Sixth Gear on opening night. We were impressed with the build out of the space. Small but cozy. Great crowd with good energy. The bartenders were busy but welcoming and friendly. The winter squash soup was spicy and delicious. The yam leaf salad was very light. The bacon wrapped dates were good as an appetizer but might be even better as dessert. The Cuban sandwich stole the show. The fries were so so. They have a nice beer selection including a rotating beer from Maine Beer Co. and Revolution Anti-Hero in Chicago. All in a great first experience. We’ll be back soon!
