Everything was very good here except the cioppino, which was a special. It was tough and very time consuming to eat. Also, both locations were designed«shotgun shack» style, making it very difficult to navigate. We had to squeeze past the bar, down a narrow aisle, to get to our table in the back. Oysters have been good as well as the french fries. And it does get crowded so try to make a reservation. Kind of kid friendly. They had a kids’ menu but the restaurant design(including high top booths — yikes, where’d my 2-year old go?!?) made it a little difficult to navigate with our toddler. Best to just leave them with the sitter if you want to come here.

Food was good and service too. I do take exception to them charging for bread. If I spend $ 85 for dinner I expect bread to be included. There was no mention of a «bread charge».

wow cant believe all these stars – yes it was recommended but gotta tell ya guys-it was very pricey for the amount of fish you actually got! —my butterfish –had 2 pieces that was only 2 in in diameter and not much veggies-$ 27 – my son got the sushi wth forbidden rice and there must have been a handful of rice on his dish that he asked for more. $ 32 .and the cauliflower appetizer was great but it was $ 7!!! yes service good but sorry i wont be recommending and neither will my son…

My wife and I frequent this place, and we’ve never been disappointed. Although the crab is okay, everything else is great, including the service. Definitely check out the happy hour. Also, the calamari rocks!

4 stars for the excellent food and service we received for my early Mother’s Day dinner. Minus a star for the very high prices and small portions. Parking was very challenging with all the construction, and the CU Boulder graduation events happening the same weekend(why does CU Boulder have their granduation the same weekend as Mother’s Day??), in downtown Boulder, especially on Pearl St. between 9th and 11th streets. Luckily, it was a very nice day, but driving around for 20 minutes looking for parking wasn’t great. I missed Jax’s Happy Hour because of this :(

This place gets seriously busy, so book ahead or line up early, so you’re not disappointed! I stop here at happy hour as the deals are amazing. My fave is the spicy tuna, peel and eat shrimp, and when they do 75c oyster days! So good!

Had an amazing dinner! Ahi Tuna special was delicious, flavorful and light. West Coast oysters were a treat being from the east coast. Very attentive service

If you have not eaten here, you’re missing out! I had the calamari fries, oyster on the half and seared ahi. Don’t judge me, but I also had a mule, coffee and a liquor with coffee beans just like I like it. Such flavor cooked and served to perfection. Make a reservation!

Really enjoyed my dinner here– perfectly seared ahi tuna with the most remarkable fingerling potatoes I have ever had-strange but true standout. Paloma made with habañero infused tequila made for a great cocktail to accompany calamari and spicy tuna starters. Dessert-tasty, inventive tres leches cake with hardened caramel slice wedge. Great table service by support staff; however, waiter spotty on attentiveness and rudely dismissive about closing out our bill(we got several wave offs). He literally left all 8 of us waiting for 15 minutes while he stood in the nearly empty restaurant talking to friends at the bar. Rude.

This is insane that I had one of the best seafood dinners I have ever eaten in a land locked state! I come from Florida and I can say I have never had a Rock fish more delicious then the one I ate here. The service was really good too. Before I took my last sip of wine or water the waiter was there to offer more. I was truly a great dining experience. Only negative I would say was the noise level was a bit high. But other than that, my new favorite when in Boulder. Definitely coming back!

I don’t give 5 stars very often but I had to. One the service was great. Despite the kitchen being closed the server and the chef was very nice and still allowed us to order food. I ordered the French fries which had this very nice parmesan cheese. It was light and delicious. We also, ordered the fried calamari which was unexpected. They have the legs not just the body of the squid. It was a great starter and a the chile aioli sauce was great. Lastly, we ordered the Catfish which was cooked to perfection and the tomato red wine sauce had a great flavor to it and the tiny bit of heat set it off. Everything about the meal from food taste to service was excellent. P. S. The Jax strawberry lemonade is a great drink

One of the best meals I’ve had — and it was seafood in the middle of frontierland ;-0 The hostess was fantastic and accommodated us for my brother’s bday who was searching high and low for Cioppino. They made it special for him even though it was not a Sunday and it was DELICIOUS. Raw oysters were fantastic and the dirty martinis with local vodka… so good I had to have three! Highly recommended, and will be coming back for sure.

Just flew in from San Francisco and were roaming around Pearl Street Mall, and popped in here when we saw a sign for Happy Hour oysters. We loved the(chesapeake) oysters. We also tried the gumbo(tasty, ok) and the peel your own shrimp(an odd texture) with a flavorful mustard sauce. The lemonade vodka was very sweet and tasted like punch. Did not detect any any vodka. We then drove out to Flatirons/Chautauqua park and hiked until it got too dark. Service was awesome. They even brought us warm wet towels.

We often go here for happy hour, 3pm –6pm, and there’s a reason we always go back. Im from the low country in NC(Wilmington), so I’m a total seafood snob but this place is legit. And they care about sustainable fishing practices which ranks high with me. It’s small so go early or you won’t get a table. The oysters are as good as the season, get them in the fall, I personally recommend Chesapeake/VA oysters, they served them with a crazy good citrus sauce(ask for it cause we haven’t got it every time). Peel and eat shrimp, hell yes. Puttanesca… OMG. I’ve been dreaming about it ever since. Pretty good drink specials, $ 4 well liquor drinks get me feelin right. We joke because every time we go here it $ 100 happy hour:/ that’s what happens when you eat 24 oysters, 2 orders of peel and eat, puttanesca, and drink ur face off. Beware. Oh and the green curry mussels are not that good. We get muscles everywhere possible and these are sub par. HEYJAXCHEF! Make a muscle dish with the crazy delicious puttanesca sauce and it will add it to my $ 100 happy hour must have list… I mean it, please do it.

I really wanted to get seafood to celebrate my birthday, so we came to Jax during happy hour(4−6pm). The happy hour menu is pretty good, though I wouldn’t constitute anything from the menu as a proper meal – they’re mostly just appetizers. Nonetheless, we ordered two dozen of the happy hour oysters, the Puttanesca, poutine, and two cocktails. I wasn’t too impressed with the poutine(it was my first time trying it after all), but I really enjoyed the Puttanesca and the oysters; in particular I really liked the seafood broth that was in the Puttanesca. I don’t envision myself coming back to Jax for any reason other than happy hour, but I reckon if the happy hour items are delicious, the dishes on their regular menu must also be delicious. The staff here is also fantastic – very respectful and welcoming, so there’s another reason to visit.

Jax offers a quaint, exposed brick albeit smallish dining area with a really great, bustling u-shaped bar. I’ve dined here several times and it has been very consistently fabulous each time… although I will admit that there are some colorful regulars at this happening seafood + sushi spot! On this occasion, a man at the bar had an oyster perched atop a sword, which he then deftly positioned into his mouth — from the end of what appeared to be a 36″ blade. I had to look away, and the server behind me nonchalantly muttered, «.guess I’ll call 911 if it gets out of hand,» which is such a great response to having a man eating oysters from a blade of steel a la The World’s Most Interesting Man. The oysters here are FRESH — tried the happy hour $ 1.25 Emersons(VA), and they were… as I said, fabulous and fresh! I ate mine sans the sword, but pondered how exciting it would be to nosh on what might be my last oyster if I attempted to eat them from the business end of a very large, cold, steel blade. The spicy tuna on the happy hour menu is a MUSTTRY. If those two morsels of spicy ahi goodness served atop a slightly crispy sushi rice cake, topped with masago and scallion were served via blade of steel, I’d still probably go for it. They are that good. A thankful note: On this specific evening, my date abruptly left me at our table alone after receiving an urgent phone call, and the bartender was a class act… really appreciated the kindness of the staff in understanding the emergency and in showing such wonderful compassion. Thank you.

I had a craving for seafood so I decided I would try Jax. It’s a nice little place with a very good wait staff and wonderful bartenders. As an appetizer I ordered Gumbo from the happy hour menu and my date ordered calamari. Both appetizers were good I am not a big fan of calamari but she shared a piece with me and it was tasty. For the main plate she ordered sea bass and I ordered swordfish. The sea bass was a little spongy and had a heavy fish taste. My swordfish was good although I like it could have been cooked a little more. Overall the meals were good but the appetizers were the highlight of our meals. The service was good and the ambience is very comfortable. The bill with tip(20%) came to $ 120 that includes 2 beers and a cocktail for my date. I would return to Jax but probably only for a special reason.
