Brunch was delish. Catfish, shrimp and oyster sandwich. Waiter, Daniel, he was on point. Definitely will return.

DIRECTIONSTOSUGARSHACK: walk west on Rockaway Point Blvd until you come to the traffic light at Beach 181st Street(you’ll pass the Roxbury Fire Dept and Lovoi’s Auto Shop) and turn right. Let the guard know you’re going to Sugar Shack. She’ll threateningly tell you«Ok, but after you eat, come right back out.» Point taken. You can see Sugar Shack from the guard’s hut. It’s just across the parking lot. Sugar Shack is CASHONLY. The nearest ATM is just to the north inside Pebble’s Pub(which curiously doesn’t seem to have a Unilocal profile). Now for the actual review: Sugar Shack is an intensely local place. It’s the kind of place where teenagers walk in barefoot and leave messages for the cashier to give to various family members. «When my dad comes in, can you tell him I’m at so-and-so’s house?» Yeah, THAT local. I definitely felt out of place, but not uncomfortably so. Sugar Shack serves up a solid assortment of fair fare: pizza, chicken fingers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, fried pickles, fried Oreos. I had the«Mayor’s» sandwich, on the recommendation of a local who helped me find Sugar Shack. It’s roast beef with melty cheese and brown gravy dripping between a toasted garlic roll(or hero, depending on your appetite). Outstanding. The pizza seemed to be a star attraction among the locals. At least 3 out of every 4 customers ordered it while I was there. The name Sugar Shack, I assume, comes from their ice cream counter and impressive candy collection. I didn’t indulge, but plan to next time I’m out Rockaway way. Bottom line: there’s no better place to grab a drink and a bite after a long day of cooking yourself at Jacob Riis or Fort Tilden. Five stars well-deserved.

Sugar Shack absolutely deserves 5 stars. NOT for the food — but for the location, the vibe and the fact that there is pretty much no other spot in the area if you happen to visit Ft. Tilden beach. This spot saved me from sun stroke and dehydration. For reals. We biked the 13 miles to Ft. Tilden in 83 degree weather(on an empty stomach). We got to the beach, ate our handful of almonds, dipped into the water and felt dizzy, light-headed. So, we Unilocaled«food, anything, sustenance»…Sugar Shack to the rescue. It was completely hidden. We were biking and our googlemap did not align. So we stopped to ask a local on the road and she directed us to «go way down the street, look for the parking lot area with the grey shack in the middle… «. Perfect directions. When we got to the shack, we were about to lock our bikes — but a customer told my spouse, «You don’t need to do that around here, we don’t even lock our front doors». I realize that Breezy Point, Ft. Tilden feels like a NYC twilight zone, as if you are in the middle of sand dune Maine, but I mean, you are *still* in Queens(we locked our bikes). When you enter you will quickly notice that everyone knows each other, it’s a local spot. You may ALSO notice the Deep Fried Oreos and Deep Fried Snickers on the menu… We were so parched, we went for the lemon ice and it HITTHESPOT!!! O. M. G. It may have saved our lives. Perfect portion, perfectly tart and sweet. So am I giving the Sugar Shack 5 stars for the food? No, because I would NEVER eat the food… It’s for the lemon ice, the location, the experience, the beautiful basil plants on the tables and the fact that they are the only spot that provides sustenance in that area.

Food is great, Worth the trip over the bridge to Roxbury. Just tell the guard at the security gate you’re going to the Sugar Shack, Big Roast Beef Hero & Fresh Cut French Fries. Local Operation
