I’ve always had great experience shopping here. I frequently buy spaghetti squash and butternut squash and ask them to cut them for me (they are really hard to cut). They always do it.
Great prices and everyone is VERY pleasant.

Bread is fresh baked and very good. Stay away from everything else. The meat is poor quality and after reading some of the reviews here about a lack of cleanliness I now know why it smells when you walk in the door.

Top tomato has been one of my favorite stores for a long time. You can always find everything you need. The customer service is wonderful. Everyone is so helpful and friendly. Peter, the manager, is always there to help and offer suggestions. There’s some new faces I’ve noticed but they are just as helpful and friendly as all the people I’ve seen there for years. The new remodeling of the store looks wonderful, i especially the new fish case. I will continue to shop here as long as they are around.

Yikes, are we all shopping at the same store? I was surprised to read the low reviews here. We have been buying our produce here for several years now. I think you will find just as in any store that not all of the produce is perfect. I usually shop a couple of times a week so I have what I need for that night and the next day. I think it is one of the better selections of produce in Brick.

Just got prepared chicken franchaise (sp?) and it tasted like it sat in the dumpster before it was given to me. The food cases look filthy and the smell coming off of the of 2 two Top Tomato employees was simply horrific. The selection here is great but it’s not worth the gamble of whether or not you get sick from eating the food.

I shop here at least once/​week. If you follow their sale flyer you sure get some good finds! Are there new owners or managers in the store in Brick? They rearranged a bit and it seems cleaner and items are more on display. The only negative I can say is that yes the fruits are touched and by that I mean you have to eat them quick or will go bad even in the frig.

I remember when this store first opened it was good. It has gone down hill. The produce is awful and the people behind the cold cut counter do not slice the meat the way you ask them to.
The meat in the meat counter was absolutely disgusting today. I couldn’t believe the hamburgers, the chop meat and the lamb chops were almost black. Disgusting! I asked the worker if they had any peppers that weren’t rotten and he said NO, that’s all we have. I rather pay $ 2.00 a pound and buy peppers that are not rotten. I will never go back to that store again. .I’d rather pay top dollar at a regular supermarket then buy garbage at Top Tomato. You would think with a name like that, they would have good produce!

My wife fell in a hole in the parking lot this winter. I realize that the lot is not owned by Top Tomato but one of the owners said it would be repaired. Months later the hole was still there. The other owner said it would be done by the next day. Months later it is still there. A bunch of uncaring BS artists. I was given the name of the actual property owner but they are not listed anywhere. I was told by the owner of the store they do not have their number or address. If they lie to your face what do they do behind your back? Beware!

It’s a decent place. I’m a little pissed off at the moment because I purchased a turkey tenderloin yesterday that was marked 1.5 lbs and when I got home and took it out of the package, it appeared small so I weighed it, and it came out to just a drop over a pound. Poultry is expensive enough that I don’t want to pay for an extra ½ pound. Go to the counter and make them weigh meats while you watch. I’ve also seen people go over to the bagel display and touch all the bagels with their hands, not using any paper, to squeeze them to see how fresh they are. How many people have to touch the bagels before someone else buys them? Hygiene problems are definitely an issue with this place. I wonder what the Ocean County Board Of Health would have to say about this.

Gone bad. Apart from an unnoticed overcharge at the reg (bought 1 cuke charged for 3), I guess thats what happens when you HAND RING everything with NO SCANNER. Thats a negative but not a deal killer. Had ordered deli. A few of the sale items advertised not available. Ordered ‘very thin‘ slices got thick. Bought a few riceballs. they were Stale, sour & dry.
The produce was reasonably priced but alas, as what happens with cheap imported produce, most of my produce went bad in a day or 2. I didn‘t get a chance to enjoy teh loss leader .49cent lb eggplant as it was mushy 4 days later.
Their warm on site italian bread remained ‘soft‘ like a wawa hoagie roll instead of getting hard like a NY ‘hero‘ roll. When they 1^st opened, they advertised and imported their bread and bakry in from
seems they no longer advertise for the area (even the website doesn‘t truly acknowledge the stores existence) and now have an on site bakery. Normally a good thing, but when you come to town like a ‘NY‘ style place and revert to soft bread and on site cookies, you become like every other sub-​par deli around. Should have stuck to trucking in NY goods and should bring in GOOD QUALITY produce. I would rather pay more for good quality then less for crap I‘ll trhow away later. This is NOT a good place to shop and if you see a crazy deal on sometihng in the produce– use it that day or next otherwise you will be sorry a bad place.

I usually love this place, great prices on produce.
Recently I went to the Deli Counter and got a rice ball. The guy behind the deli counter was giving me atitude. Now, i just opened my rice ball and i am pretty sure there was a pubic hair perfectly placed on top of it. I think this was done intentionally. I ate the rice ball anyway, after removing the pubic hair of course. It tasted old, and the cheese tasted curdled. I threw most of it away.
I will shop here again, but i will no longer be going to the deli counter.
ON a side note-​there pizza doug is great. so is there bread.

I am newly transplanted to the shore area from North Jersey. As much as living here is wonderful, I missed the foods I was accustomed to finding at every corner, the family butcher and fresh bakery. Fortunately, I found everything I was missing at the hidden gem in Brick, Top Tomato! They have all the best quality meat, cheese and produce I am use to finding at my local market plus the benefit of a bakery with delicious fresh baked cookies and hot crispy bread which you smell baking the second you walk in the door. One stop shopping! Everything is always so fresh and clean. I love how the staff treats you like family and the owner, Angelo, goes out of his way to make sure you are completely satisfied and found everything you needed. I have been told by my friends and family that I am extremely picky, so trust me when I tell you, this place is fabulous!

BEWARE! Employees DO NOT wash their hands before leaving the restroom.
I did contact the board of health on this matter after I discovered there was no soap dispenser whatsoever in the employee restroom.
I asked one of the workers – that happens to handle food – who was waiting to use the restroom after me if he washes his hands and he told me no. I asked if they were supposed to wash their hands and he also said no. When I asked the store manager (Denise I think) about it she seems surprised as she mumbles something about the maintenance guy still not having fixed it yet and asks one of the cashiers to page Angelo. When Angelo arrives I question him about the employee’s answer to my questions which he brushes off as a language barrier since most of the stockers are Spanish speaking and assures me they are indeed instructed to wash their hands. I asked him where they wash there hands since there is no soap in the bathroom and he responds with «I’ll go and get some now.» Really? This is a mini-​mart that happens to sell soap and no one in that place has the sense to go and get a bar of soap from the shelf to place in the bathroom?!

The price of their produce is great, and sometimes it is really nice and fresh, but you have to be careful and really inspect everything every time, I’ve gotten stuff that went bad in a day or two at home.
They have a good selection of specialty and high quality items like cheeses and such, but those things are not any cheaper than anywhere else. The regular grocery stuff on the shelves I find are more expensive than stop and shop.
Fish is on display out in the open, which is kinda skeevy (people can be gross — I saw someone cough right onto an open display).
Never tried deli or bakery.
Overall, worth stopping in to check out what’s fresh if you eat a lot of fruit and veg, or if you’re a real foodie and like specialty ingredients.

It’s really no better than average. The produce is usually hit or miss. I’ve purchased spectacular produce from this place, and other times got stuck with lousy produce. Their Italian specialties are slim pickins. The seafood is usually good. If you like sausage, don’t buy it here. It’s utterly tasteless. Bread either good or just ok, depending on which type you buy. They do have a great selection of san marzano tomatoes though (which is what I usually come for).

I saw beautiful roast beef in the cold cut counter. It was rare and lean, so I ordered a sandwich to go. When I got back to work, I had a sandwich from a different cut of meant that was old and all fat. I will never set foot in that store again.

Their Italian bread is fantastic. I hate everything else about this store.
First. it feels dirty. They are often out of sale items and don’t post a sign about any substitutions. At checkout I asked the cashier about the out of stock Philly cream cheese (was 99¢on sale). She said, we’re subbing White Rose… #1 White Rose (generic) is only worth 99¢, #2 How about posting a sign? She was willing to hold up the only open cash register for me to meander the store to get White Rose cream cheese.
What also peeves me is that the circular doesn’t state any stipulations for sale items but they handwrite a sign in the store saying you have to buy $ 20 of non sale items per sale item to get the sale price.
As the other reviewer said, restocking staff with large carts are forever in the way as you’re trying to shop.
The produce is ultra ripe.
The deli staff apparently don’t take requests. I asked for my cheese and ham to be sliced thin. Got home and it find it wasn’t even close. The guy had a bad attitude too.
Few registers ever open and you have to constantly move while you’re in line because you’re blocking a passage way.
Not worth it.

This is one of two Top Tomato chains in NJ: the other being in Freehold, and the rest being in New York. The cost of produce here can give ShopRite & Pathmark a run for their money. It’s a clear winner when you’re looking for the best price on most produce, especially my favorite — red leaf lettuce.
This is the place to be if you want to get lettuce, oranges, tomatoes, strawberries, bags of onions and other fruits & vegetables. Everything I’ve purchased here was fresh, so, I have no real explanation about what the negative reviewers are talking about in this regard.
Top Tomato has a weekly circular with sale items — great place to stock up on cereal, too (and waffles, don’t forget the waffles). Sometimes there are cheap prices on a gallon of milk. As with any grocery store, be sure to check their circular. Top Tomato used to mail them out at request, but stopped doing this in early summer 2013.
This location is starting to have more frequent sale prices with $ 30 minimum purchases* (*in fine print, put your reading glasses on), which I believe will begin to backfire for the store. This is one of those places where you’re coming in to only buy a few select things — not stock up your cart as you would at ShopRite.
This is a cash-​only place, unless you’re buying over $ 5 worth of stuff.

I was in there today — and again disapointed. As my father says you have to eat the fruit/​veggies on the way home they are so over-​ripe. The bakery section leaves much to be desired. I puchased two cream puffs and took forever because the girl behind the counter was busy flirting with the guy in the same dept rolling bread. Got home and the cream puffs were stale and they were 3.49/each! Ugh! The staff is constantly in the way with huge containers filling up already full sections of fruit or veggies. And checking out was a disaster with the gal at the register telling her life story to each person she was ringing up… never again. stay away. everytime its like this.

I enjoy shopping at Top Tomato when I’m in the area. They have an extremely friendly and helpful staff, very good prices (especially on veggies and fruit) and their ready made salads are wonderful to pick up for lunch. Meat prices are average but they carry all types which is very good (lean ground turkey, extra lean ground chicken, beef etc…) Breads are always fresh and tasty too. The location is annoying if you’re coming from the north, but when you’re traveling on Brick Blvd coming back from the Toms River area, you cannot beat it.
