House of Cupcakes

I’m so disappointed!!! Why did they shut down? Does anyone know if they are at a different location? I NEEEEEEEEED HOUSE OF CUPCAKES IN MY LIFE!!!

The red velvet cupcakes had far too much frosting, which overpowered the flavor of the cake itself. The icing of the pink lemonade was extremely bitter. In addition, the store just closed with no warning or notice to its customers. Horrible way to do business. I went there one day, returned two days later and they were shut down.

SPOILER ALERT! It’s official that this place is CLOSED after a short run. Wonder if it has anything to do with the brand new Bay Plaza Mall that opened about a month ago. I don’t think my review had anything to do with it or maybe people are more concerned about cutting down on sweets. Either way, hasta la vista, HOC!

House of Cupcakes is now closed. Disappointed but not surprised. If CRUMBS can’t survive in Manhattan without a last minute bail out from a tv host, don’t know how they expected this place to survive in Co-​Op City. Cupcakes are impulse buys and the real money from these types of stores seems to be from bulk buys for parties– which there was probably less opportunities here. Not the right fit and too expensive for the area. But I still liked coming here since it was usually empty where I can sit down and have an iced coffee at least. (that also was probably a sign it would soon close And the cupcakes were decent as well.
A decent store and I’d visit the other locations, but not the right fit for Co-​Op City.

I had to comment again about this terrible place! They messed up my order and then gave me a cake that was not neatly done! The frosting was falling off the cupcakes, they gave me a purple cake instead of a pink cake, and then they didn’t add glitter to the cake!
They called me multiple times because they didn’t write down my instructions properly 2 hrs before they were supposed to deliver it! If you didn’t want my business, then say so! Don’t mess up my first child’s first birthday! Never never never never never again!!!

The customer service here is horrible. I’ve been here 3 times and each time they gave me the wrong cupcakes! The quality of their products is no where near good enough to endure their constant mistakes. Go elsewhere!

I happen to be working near house of cupcakes again so i decided to try it one more time. I did not let anyone there know even though i was offered 2 free cupcakes and coffee from the owner to try it again.
I purchased 3 cupcakes and brought them home to share with my wife. The first cupcake we had was the pumpkin. I was completely surprised at how much i liked it. It was really good. The only complaint i can make is that i would have liked the cupcake to have been a little more spicy (not heat, pumpkin spice), but i still really enjoyed it. My wife hates pumpkin so she did not.
Next up was chocolate brownie cheesecake. The cake and frosting were really good. The cheesecake filling was flavorless. I would have liked a really nice cheesecake flavor because it would have gone nicely with the delicious sweet chocolate cupcake and frosting. Overall, i still enjoyed this cupcake.
Finally we had the red velvet. This cupcake i did not like at all. The cake was fine but i like cheesecake frosting with red velvet and it did not come with cheesecake frosting. I am not sure what type of frosting it was, other than being sweet and maybe vanilla.
So overall i am going to add 2 more stars from my last review because it was definitely pretty good and a place i would visit again.

My friends and I came here after a disappointing brownie bite at apple bees, we wanted something a bit sweeter and this was the place to go.
We had the mexican hot chocolate cupcake, it was fan-​frekin-​tastic.
The atmosphere is great, and the variety of cupcakes is large, they have a piña colada cupcake!!! And the music is great.
Definitely a go to spot and the prices are good compared to many cupcake shops i’ve been to.

I have been to this location while shopping (who can resist a cupcake every now and again?) and have never had any issue with customer service etc. The layout reminds me a lot of Georgetown cupcakes in Soho of which I’m also a big fan of. My darling husband surprised me with these cupcakes for my birthday and also for pre-​day today and I had no complaints! I’m a sucker for a great red-​velvet and HOC did not disappoint! I don’t eat frosting so I can’t comment on that. Untried the vanilla today and it had a mild weird taste to it but that just might be me! Lol Presentation was great, love the pretty candy hearts on top. Received a red velvet push pop, can’t wait to try!

I’ve been to their Princeton location and visited here once before, but this second visit deserved a review.
Pretty space, good way to order on a form you give to a server, but only average cupcakes, and AMAZINGLY BAD service.
My husband kept thinking the size cupcakes we received were the minis, not the full-​size the we had ordered. Not good. We got the full-​size and I could understand how one would think otherwise, that’s how small they were. Perhaps that’s why the icing is so generous, to make the cupcakes seem bigger. Icing is not so flavorful, and neither were the cakes. Texture of the cakes is very fine, though. Luckily, the flavors weren’t chemically but taste rather genuine — when you can taste them.
The service put my husband over the edge. They could not figure out how to ring up our order (we got a gift card as well), package it correctly (instead of 2 containers, 11 cupcakes were, strangely, packed in 3 containers), AND we got the wrong flavor cupcakes! We asked if we could keep our order sheet so we’d know what was what, and that seemed to confuse the server as well! Not hopeful for this place…

It is nice having a cupcake shop in the Bronx. I stop there once in a while to try some cupcakes and coffee while taking a break from my bike riding. Although I am dieting and eat mostly salads, I will eat a cupcake once in a while. Nice decorations of the cupcakes. The cupcakes are moist too.

I like sweets. Cookies, cakes. etc. So when I was in the area, I figured why not get some cupcakes.
I had heard of House of Cupcakes because of the Food Network. I’m usually pretty skeptical of places that are endorsed or mentioned on Food Network but I’m not familiar with any businesses in the Bronx, so I figured I’d give it a shot.
I ordered a dozen and picked a variety of the flavors. My family cut up and taste-​tested each of flavors in the container. My favorites by far were the Salted Caramel, Cookie Dough and the Cupcakes Wars winning Espresso Brownie.
Biggest surprise was the Carrot Cake. That cream cheese icing is probably the best I’ve ever had!

12 cupcakes for the price of 6? I could not resist this deal!
Here’s the thing… Overall I have had way better! I find this place inconsistent… A few flavors are great, but others are bad. The strawberry shortcake taste like dental fluoride to me!
I think the cake has a weird consistency and reminds me of box cake mix. For the most part the icings and cupcake fillings really won me over. There ganache chocolate icing is some of the best for chocolate lovers. The filling to the Carmel Apple cupcake was insanely yummy too!
I think I would still come back here for particular cupcakes! Especially with some of those deals!

I’m still a big fan of House of Cupcakes. Whenever I’m in the Bx, I usually stop in. The customer service has always been great! Personally I don’t think the cupcakes are ‘overly frosted’. It’s the frosting that separate cake from other sweet goodies such as cookies or a brownie (which they have). The cupcakes have always been fresh and tasty. So I’ll continue my patronage.

The cupcakes looked mass-​produced and were just average supermarket quality in taste and presentation. Tasteless cake mix, Crisco and lots of sugar. The frosting on the chocolate chip mint left a chemical taste in my mouth, with artificial chocolate flavor. The hazelnut frosting did not impart any nut flavor, and was merely colored beige. High quality extracts or toasted chop nuts would have been tastier, but I surmise this café caters to the masses and would not spare the expense. The cake was soft and tasteless, like box mix. I am an experienced home baker, and have had the same disappointing experience with all of the over-​hyped Manhattan cupcakes as well. Magnolia, Crumb, and especially Baked by Melissa all serve up bland, soulless confections. If I want to indulge in some great cup cakes, I’ll just bake them.

House of Cupcakes to the rescue! My husband and I planned a last minute birthday for our daughter and needed a special cake to go with her birthday theme which. I asked for a custom pull apart cup cake to the done for the next day and they they absolutely got the job done beautifully. The staff was friendly and helpful. Looks like found new cake place. Loved it!

I have definitely had better. One of the managers was walking around, behind the counter while using his cellphone and he had blood on his shirt. It was kind of a turn off but he wasn’t touching the food and he wasn’t wearing food-​handling clothing so my sister and I were relieved to see him be discreetly told by another employee to leave the area.
The cupcakes are ok, not great but ok. I have definitely had better. Salted Caramel was good; neither the Pistachio nor the Hazelnut cupcakes lived up to their name. I don’t know where their flavors went. The Red Velvet was another «ok». I won’t say their the worst because I have had worse as well but they definitely need to step their game up on the flavor palette.

Not a fan of overly frosted cupcakes, but if you are its great. I like the cupcakes with filling!
Ordered a pull apart cake (made from cupcakes) it was cool but they completely forgot to add wording. No Happy Birthday_​_​_​_​_​_​_​_​, not much of a birthday if your cake doesnt say it. For the $ 80 i paid I was pissed off. But they gave me a half dozen for free the next time i came in.
Only reason why I gave them 4 stars is those damn cookies. I’m addicted! I swear their is crack in the chocolate chip walnut cause i can’t get enough.

I give this place three stars because it is about average. Nothing about it made me say I need to go out of my way to come back here, but it is providing a product that is currently not offered in this area.
Pros:
Cute new place, clean and inviting. I’m a sweet freak so I love the fillings and frostings. My personal favorites so far are the dulce de leche and strawberry with a strawberry preserve filling.
Cons:
The cupcakes taste pretty average nothing special in the cakes, but I feel the same about Crumbs and other similar shops. They might want to consider temperature control in their displays. The frosting on some of the cupcakes were literally melting and dripping off the sides and it was not hot in the shop. This is either a temperature issue or the decorator needs glasses. Either way, a less than perfect product should never be in the display. Appearance means everything and if it’s not pretty no one wants to buy it.
Customer service is lacking but speaking as a Bronx native that is common for Da Bronx. It would be nice to see some real customer service if I’m paying $ 2.75/cupcake plus tax. Greet customers with a smile, say «Welcome to House of Cupcakes, How can I help you today» «Thank you» «Hope to see you again» «Can I suggest something for you». Not the typical blurted out one word «HowmayIhelpyou» with no smile or enthusiasm. What about making a signature greeting? It’s the house of cupcakes, what about «Welcome to our home.» If the staff isn’t interested in working there, why would customers be interested in shopping there.
Final Thoughts:
This business could do better if the staff was more enthusiastic and approachable. Bronxites are tough, you gotta give your customers something no one else in Bay Plaza offers and a smile sprinkled with a little courtesy and kindness goes a long way. Cashiers should promote the «Buy 5 get 1 Free» and other offers. I didn’t know about this until I asked. Employees, promote your business and do it with a smile!!! If the company doesn’t do well today, you won’t have a job tomorrow.

Kind of stuck between 3.5 and 4… I really wish Unilocal had a more comprehensive scale. Also, the map shown here is beyond wrong (thanks, Google). It’s in Bay Plaza, not anywhere near the walking path shown on this map. Do not follow it, or you’ll wind up in someone’s kitchen asking for cupcakes and not the café!
Anyways, I finally got to try one of these cupcakes after waiting for months for House of Cupcakes to open! I was really impressed with the variety of flavors. Pretty much anything you want is available, from chocolate truffle to plain vanilla.
Cupcakes are $ 2.75 individually but the prices change if you buy them in bulk. They’re not as large as the ones from Crumbs downtown, they’re about the size of a homemade cupcake. The cake part is good, moist, and they have a lot of very sweet frosting. However, it’s not as sweet as Crumbs, which in my opinion is a little bit cloyingly sweet, so thumbs up for that.
It’s a small establishment, as was everything else that has previously occupied the space (you know you’re old if you remember the Dunkin’ Donuts that was here). Also, while the cupcakes are good, I’m a little bit disappointed with the size to price ratio. Maybe next time I’ll buy in bulk.
