I made reservations here for Valentine’s Day. The Prix Fix menu wasn’t to our liking since there were item on it that my girlfriend was allergic to and others I didn’t like. I called ahead and asked before making the reservations if the regular menu would be available. I was told absolutely! I booked the reservation because there were many other items that we both would enjoy. Our reservation was for 7:45PM but it took us 25 min to find parking. Worried about the time, I called when i realized we would be late. Someone answered the phone but never greeted me or responded. They just left the line open as I waited. Eventually they hung up on me. We decided to take a chance in hopes that we would be seated. When we got there it was pretty empty for a Valentine’s night. We entered the restaurant and no one greeted us, which I thought was strange given there wasn’t that many people there(at least upstairs). We moved in and asked if we could be seated, to which they said certainly. They asked us to have a seat at the bar while they got a table ready for us. Again, I thought that was strange because several table were open. We sat at the bar for 15 minutes making me feel like they strategically did that in hopes of us buying drinks at the bar. once I complained, we were seated 3 minutes later. The bartender came over and again asked if we wanted drinks. He was weird and we didn’t understand his involvement with us at our table. A waiter came over and took our order but then 5 minutes later a young lady approached us and told us that we could only order the Prix Fix menu. We told her why we didn’t want that and she went to talk to the manager and came back and said we could then order two specific items from the regular menu(Red Snapper or Jerk chicken) the jerk chicken was an appetizer. I wanted to leave but my girlfriend reminded me that it was late and Valentine’s night… so we stayed and both ordered the Red Snapper. Throughout our dinner we could hear other tables complaining about different issues like they were out of various foods. The Snapper wasn’t bad but it was very spicy and I don’t eat spicy foods. It might have been nice if the waiter explained that when I was forced to order it. We both had our eye on the chocolate cake that was being served for dessert but was told that they ran out only to see two other people receive it 15 minutes after we asked for it. Obviously they didn’t want us to have it since we didn’t order the prix fix menu. I don’t normally say this when reviewing a restaurant, but i will not return to this establishment because i felt like i was being«suckered» the entire time and no one tried to accommodate us in any way on such a special night. They won’t get another dime of my money.

I was in the area and decided to check this place out with a coworker. We arrived around 3:30 in the afternoon and were told that the kitchen was closed until 5pm, but the bar was open. Thankfully, the chef was very accommodating and whipped up their famous oxtail empanadas for us. Let me first start off by saying that these were by far the best empanadas I have ever tasted. The best way to describe the favors is like an explosion in your mouth. There were so good we placed two orders. The drinks were amazing as well, strong and perfectly mixed. Special thanks to the chef and Maya the bartender… We will definitely be back to try the other items on the menu. This place definitely is a hidden gem.

I had the pleasure of feasting on a meal of hanger steak with diri jon jon rice(black rice) with some sort of creamy delicious lentil sauce. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender and the season created a wonderful party of flavors in my mouth. The rice was an awesome companion that along with the sauce was simply incredible. If your in Brooklyn, find your way to BK9. If you’re not in Brooklyn, BK9 is a good reason to make that trip.

Saw this place a few times while in downtown Brooklyn and decided to give it a try before a game one day, upon entering I was greeted by the owner, he sat me down and checked up on me a few times to make sure everything was ok and was very friendly, I had a rum punch that was really tasty and strong, for dinner I had the tour d’legume(veggie dish with eggplant, zucchini etc) with diri jon jon(black rice with Lima beans), it was healthy and filling, some people might find it to be a bit bland but I enjoyed it, will go back and try some other things there

I’m a long time Islanders fan and when my team moved to Barclays, I wasn’t sure where the new place to pregame at would be. I checked out bk9 at first because it was less crowded than the other spots by the arena, but I quickly grew to love it! The drink specials are great — $ 4 craft beers — and I love the Carribean vibe, the jerk chicken was incredible. Way better than my experiences in jamaica itself! The staff is also incredibly attentive and friendly. I’ll continue to come here and introduce friends on game days or when I’m in the area

I’ve gone twice this week already! Once for dinner and again for brunch. I highly recommended the oxtail empanadas(OMG) and the pork chop was a piece of heaven. Peach Bellinis all around for brunch with the fried chicken and banana-rum waffles!!! Halleluyer!

Came here for Sunday brunch and walked out an hour and a half later still starving! Service was terrible, food came out stone cold(shame as it probably would’ve been pretty good otherwise). The place didn’t seem busy(there were maybe 10 other diners when we sat down) but it took an hour and a half to get our food! After waiting an hour, we asked about our food and were told that the chef was putting the finishing touches on our plates(by this time we could see that our plates had been sitting up on the counter untouched for a while already), and that we’d have our food shortly. 20 minutes later we asked again(dishes still sitting on the counter getting cold)…server was full of excuses, blaming kitchen staff for messing up. Finally got our food and it was stone cold. Cold shrimp Benedict(and room temp home fries) and my friend’s chicken and waffles were not much warmer. We flagged down our server and she shrugged it off with more excuses about some mix up in the kitchen before suggesting that she could *microwave* our food?!? But told us they would not remake our meals as it would take too long, then went another step further, telling us they had run out of eggs Benedict anyway… seriously??? She did give us the option to walk out(and not pay for our meals)…so we took her up on her offer! But she promptly asked us to pay for our coffee at the very least… despite the fact that she never came around to refill. Hungry and wanting to leave to find food elsewhere, we agreed to pay for the coffee and asked for a refill along with the check… she came back with old, cold coffee… needless to say, we left that untouched too. The menu looked promising, but never again.

This kitchen has it going on. The passion of the chef came through loud and clear. They nailed nearly every aspect of our dinner and the service was pleasant and fast. We ordered the jerk chicken for an appetizer. It came with three juicy legs, flavored with a complex and attractive blend of spices, not too spicy but with a good kick. The garlic chips and tangy sauce it came with paired perfectly. Could eat a whole meal of this. For dinner, the hanger steak was great, cooked perfectly with a tasty char, plated attractively with delicious black rice, a lentil purée and a good chimmichurri sauce. My wife got the crispy red snapper, which was tasty and juicy, and came with a ridiculously good yucca cake. Drinks were tasty as well — recommend the BK9 rum punch. Strong and not overly sweet. Only complaint: the free bread was dry and a bit bland, they could use a fresher supplier or to bake in-house. A great add to the neighborhood and highly recommended.

While everything we ate was tasty, presentation was lovely, and service was super friendly, I can only give BK92 stars. I found that prices were extremely high vs. portion size — exception for alcohol: beverages were well-priced with a nice pour — and I could not find the Caribbean spice I was craving. Also, we ordered 3 starters and a main and all came out at the same time. Our main was crispy snapper so we had to eat that first lest it become soggy snapper. If the waitress had said food was served as fired, I would have asked her to hold back on putting in the order for the fish. The oxtail empanadas were excellent — best thing I ate. The coconut ceviche was bland but the yucca chips were nice. I liked the jerk chicken but I wouldn’t call it jerk chicken: it was three drumsticks coated in a sweet & spicy sauce that wasn’t very spicy. It was not terribly reminiscent of any jerk chicken I’ve ever eaten. The crispy snapper was nice and crisp and the cake under the fish was really good. The fish itself needed some seasoning though and again the sauce lacked spice. Finally, the music selection was awful: some kind of terrible pop. If you are going to run a Caribbean restaurant in Brooklyn, give me reggae or at least go hipster, not Taylor Swift. I would definitely go back for a cocktail and empanada at the bar, but I don’t think I’ll go back for dinner.

Brunch review: Fresh high quality ingredients and great staff! I order the banana rum waffles which doesn’t disappoint and a perfect amount of sweetness and savory. Chicken & waffled were delicious, portion size is fairly large including the salad and potatoes that accompanies every brunch entrée. Definitely need to come back and try out the dinner menu, Thanks again for the amazing hospitality Gary!

We had a show to catch at Barclays & wanted a place to hang out & get drinks before the show my friends came across this place. We Stopped by it was not crowded we sat at the bar since all we wanted was drinks. We all had beers & a Red wine, I do not recall the name of the beer my friend had picked it I went with the same one taste wise it’s pretty harsh but main reason we choose it was because I believe it’s 7.5% alcohol for beer that is crazy, taste wise a bit harsh leaves a bit of an after taste but definitely nice amount of alcohol to it so it was great. Wine was good. As for the place itself it’s small not too much on the décor, service at the bar was good. It happen to be happy hour so the bill was very nice the beer on tap was about $ 4 dollars & change definitely not bad at all. Nice place to hang out & have drinks before catching a show we enjoyed ourselves.

I attended, tastings, soft-opening, and grand opening here, great vibe for those who like to see-and-be-seen, a cool restaurant that is casual, trendy, and classy all at once. BK9 is poised to be a staple in this area, they are unique in that, though they have influence and inspiration from all over, the Haitian factor is not so overpowering and actually serves to bring it all together. I am currently craving their steak. The drinks are good, being that they are still new, I hope the drink menu is introduced soon to give another dimension to the BK9 character. I hosted a birthday dinner here, the staff was perfect and accommodating to us beyond belief. Genuinely attentive and hospitable staff make the ups and downs of a new establishment so much more bearable. The staff is so dope tho really, they actually concerned that everyone is contented, we felt babied :)

First and foremost, I went in here with dubious expectations. But the welcoming atmosphere quickly changed that. I am a sucker for feeling at ease, and the staff did that with flying colors. Moving on to my meal. I started off with the Oxtail Empanada – succulent, and well cooked. Amazing. The main course was the Crispy Snapper. It came with a yucca croquette and crispy leek. And Oh MYGOODNESS. I HAD to call the chef over. The snapper was cooked to perfection– not overcooked, with just the right amount of ‘je né sait quoi’. You will not be disappointed. I finished it off with the Romeo and Julieta– sweet cheese in an empanada served with guava preserves and strawberries with a side of rum-spiced whipped cream. First time and I will most CERTAINLY be coming back for more. –Happy eating.

The food here is not like anything I’ve tasted before, it’s all original creations by the chef, inspired on flavors and ingredients used in Caribbean countries such as Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad y Tobago, Cuba and Dominican Republic, with a modern twist and his personal touch. The first time I came here I was with my friend from Jamaica and she was amazed, we both fell in love with the food. You HAVE to try this! Service was very good too, we were lucky enough to catch one of those not-so-busy weekday nights. They also have very nice music and very often LIVEMUSIC on Friday and Saturday nights! And it doesn’t show on Unilocal, but they also have a wonderful BRUNCH menu, they told me about and I decided to come with a couple of friends just today. We had the Banana Rum Waffles, Chicken and Waffles and Eggs Bennedict. They’re all delicious! The eggs are perfectly cooked, soft and they come over pulled pork and fried plantain, the banana waffles sauce is amazing, made with homemade caramel. I will come back until I try everything in the menu, seriously

Immensely hospitable. Varied but invariably warm and inviting interior. And the food is amazing. The pork chop and the oxtail contend for favorites. If you’re more hungry, opt for the former. If you want to savor every bite, get the latter. Go ready to shake hands with the owners. Go ready to relax through your courses. Go a little thirsty — the drinks are well made and worth exploring. And bottom line, though, definitely go.

We really enjoyed BK9 the other evening for date night. On a Friday night, the bar and restaurant were incredibly lively and we were able to choose between sitting at a table across from the open kitchen or at the bar. We chose the bar just to be closer to the action, plus the aromas and activity from the kitchen were a bit overwhelming for my taste. The staff, managers and owners were bustling about and very welcoming and attentive to everyone that night. As a first time visitor to BK9 I appreciated the classy décor and was given a tour of the backyard and downstairs event space. Over the course of the evening we had three of the rum punches and all were strong and tasty! Our dinner was winning too with oxtail empanadas, oxtail dinner and brussel sprouts. At first I thought the oxtail dinner was very small for $ 18 because you only get two oxtail pieces with special rice. In my mind that was absurd considering the amount of oxtails you normally get at a traditional Caribbean restaurant. But as I stuck my fork into my oxtail(I only had one because we had planned on sharing the entrée thinking it would be a lot of food), I immediately noticed how lean all of the meat was and how tender it was. The meat seemed to melt in my mouth! That’s when I realized that each large oxtail must’ve been created from the best parts of a few smaller oxtail parts. I thought that was impressive and complemented the chef, though I would suggest they include 3 – 4 of those specially made premium oxtails for $ 18. Then again, if one person eats their own entrée then I suppose two is enough, although I normally think of two of anything as an appetizer. The oxtail empanadas, of which you also get two, were very tasty as well. I did enjoy my brussel sprouts though they were a little more crispy than I normally like. Very delicious though, so I’d order all three again. The night we went there was live music. The saxophonist, Buyu Ambroise, had the place jamming with jazz, calypso and kompa! I really look forward to returning and will hope for a night just as memorable.
