One of the best coffee places in the area. They have really good coffee and pastries!

So many good coffee shops around the area; Grumpy coffee was so-so. They seem to be trying to too hard to be hipster.

Seems like being grumpy is a prerequisite working here. Coffee’s good, but the women behind the counter seemed like they’d rather be anywhere but there. News flash — you are dealing with people, try to at least fake a smile.

Grumpy is consistent and Grumpy is tasty. This location is no different. Seating is limited, but it’s a small space so I don’t blame them for it. Other than Krupa, this is the best coffee shop in the immediate area.

Small but the hot chocolate is yummy, yummy, yummy. It also didn’t arrive scalding hot. The décor and ambiance are awesome, no question. I’d come back since it’s also not far from the subway station.

Would have been nice to know about their«no laptop» policy BEFORE I ordered my overpriced coffee. Why not put up a sign guys? Is it because you know you would look ridiculous if you did?

This place threw me off. «Café Grumpy» might actually be one of the few places that actually encapsulates its name! And that is not a good thing. Ok so the place is tiny with very limited seating so I won’t blame them for that. It’s tiny. The place has no outlets and laptops are not allowed! Ok I get it: tiny place, limited seating, you don’t want people hovering. Good lord what a business model. Maybe just turn the place into a «to-go» place. The coffee was great though! And that gets 3 stars. Really want to give them 2.5 stars.

The appropriately named Café Grumpy has lived up to its name. I needed coffee badly. Was in the nabe, knew about the place and decided YES… good coffee. Requested a regular sized drip to stay. Sumatra was the brew. Yum, I love Sumatra, rich, dark, fruity, low acid… I get the very nice glass mug, good size, steaming… but wait… I could read a newspaper through this coffee mug, it was so watery. And the taste… just barely acceptable for a diner. Not rich, not fruity… acid wasn’t a problem because the coffee was so totally diluted. Had a scone… meh. But I came for the coffee, and I will not return. There are PLENTY of other very good to excellent coffee shops in the nabe. If you can imagine, I actually thought that it was worse than Starbucks. BTW, I rarely write reviews, unless it is marvelous… or the emperor has no clothes. This was the later. YMMV

My husband and I both loved their latte. We’ve been going around trying all kinds of coffee places. I’m partial to espresso so I stick with lattes or cortados. Theirs was so good I didn’t even have to add any sugar to enhance the flavor. The service was great too, we don’t fit into the hipster or trendy group and sometimes we’re treated differently because of it, this wasn’t the case here. The woman behind the counter was really friendly and helpful and even offered to grind the beans of a pack of coffee we were purchasing. I’d def like to check out their other locations.

I live in the neighborhood and came here for the first time this evening. Let me start by saying, «WHYDID I NOTCOMEHERESOONER!!!» Excellent coffee. Lately, I have been turned off by coffee, and have been opting for tea. Vegan cookie options were a plus(I didn’t have luck with the cookie that I tried). Seems really clean, and their marketing strategy is pretty cool. Friendly, down to earth staff. CONS: Do not have the salted chocolate chip vegan cookie. The salt is suppose to compliment the chocolate. Instead, I feel like I am just eating pure sea salt. It was probably the worst cookie I have ever tasted.

Café Grumpy doesn’t get 1 star for grumpiness — it’s for handling cloth tea bags with their bare(unwashed) hands after handling money. The girl handling my order had a small half healed wound on her finger. The scab still fresh. Smh. I don’t care if one thinks the boiling water added to my tea would«sterilize» bacteria. The point is to make your guests comfortable in every aspect in your establishment. That includes proper hygiene. I guess leaving me grumpy was the business plan. They succeeded.

The update function on Unilocal is helpful because sometimes you read back your old reviews and have no freaking idea what you were talking about. I am not sure about these consistency issues I was talking about in 2013 but today I had a well executed cappuccino and had a fun chat with the ladies working.(re: people who order on square up-you know to really minimize human contact)

Pricey coffee but worth it. The staff makes a solid double latte and cappuccino, and always remembers my name. The wall art is lovely, they rotate it throughout the seasons and feature local artists.

It isn’t often that I have a hard time rating a coffee shop. I can usually tell if it’s good or if it’s terrible. The Café Grumpy outpost in Park Slope confuses me. While it is the best cup of coffee that is closest to me, it is not the best cup of coffee in all of New York City. For starters, the service is rarely consistent. Some of the employees are very nice. Others act as though smiles are illegal and punishable by death. I get it. Hipsters. But if you’re going to be a hipster, be nice when you’re at work. You can be a douche bag when you’re outside of your workplace. Sorry about it. Secondly, the coffee isn’t always very good. What’s ironic is that the less-than-nice baristas make a pretty darn good cup of coffee. Well, in actuality, a cappuccino. That’s my usual go to drink. The nicer baristas make an okay cup. Finally, the pastry selection isn’t always fresh. Are you all getting my drift? Consistency is very important to any food establishment. And this place is, unfortunately, lacking. Other reviewers want to harp about the fact that it is a small space. But I have to kindly remind them that this is New York… and space is very limited here. Do I still go here often? Absolutely. As I said before, it’s the best that I can get near my neighborhood. But it’s not phenomenal. This is actually quite sad considering Café Grumpy has been voted one of the best coffee shops in the world. I guess I’ll have to try another location.

I’m a fan of the Grumpy chain of coffee shops. I got really excited when one opened near my job(ironically replacing a Starbucks). Unlike its more slick, Manhattan counterparts, this Grumpy is located in a tiny store front in Park Slope. It can seat about maybe ten to twelve people(tops). When I entered, they had a chalkboard with an impressive selection of coffees from Guatemala, Ethiopia and more. The bags of beans on a shelf above that sign all had nice descriptions of the coffee’s flavor, and I was very tempted by the Guatemala — only to find out they weren’t serving it that day(this was ascribed to a machine that was broken). Instead, I wound up having the Ethiopia. This not a huge loss. The coffee was, as expected, tasty with a nice tang and deep flavor. The fixings bar had everything you’ll need from raw sugar to soy milk. The staff was friendly and a bit apologetic that they couldn’t give me the flavor I wanted, but hey, there are bigger things to worry about in life so I just told them not to worry about it. Cool place for coffee, hopefully they’ll get their machinery fixed up soon!

I dare you to find a better latte in Brooklyn. The vibe is great for me, there’s no forced friendliness coming from the staff but if you just put a little effort into your opening interaction(I.e: not having your nose buried in your ig feed, maybe asking them how they are doing *gasp) then they will return in kind. I personally love the no laptop rule and that they won’t give you a shot of espresso to go. Really, you’re getting a shot of espresso, stand for twenty seconds, drink it hot, enjoy a moment of your day and give coffee the time it deserves. Everything about Grumpy asks you to look at the ritual of coffee as more than a utilitarian drug fix on the way to or back from a more pressing destination. Coffee is the journey and destination. Don’t like it? Go to a deli.

They have a new till. It’s an iPad. I emailed the receipt for my drink to my husband. All drinks have always been perfect. No dead shots.

Love love love this place. As a fresh transplant from Seattle, I was«warned» that it might be a challenge to find coffee that could compete. Well thankfully that couldn’t be further from the truth! Café Grumpy has fantastic roasts and even better, they prepare their coffee with a slow drip/pour over which retains the maximum amount of flavour. Pastries are all heavenly here as well — get their early enough and scoop up a «heartbreaker espresso» macaron with FRESH raspberries sandwiched between the espresso ganache filling. Or you can’t go wrong with an espresso biscotti! Considering this is on my walk to the F train to work everyday, I suspect I’ll become a regular in no time.

One of the early artisanal coffee shops in New York City, and one of the first local roasters. The Park Slope location, located in quieter South Slope, is one of the newer branches of Café Grumpy, which is based in Greenpoint. Just a spare, narrow corridor dominated by the staff counter and expresso bar, with a few seats at the window and several at the bar near the back. Their space is too small for lingering, hence a no lap-top policy, nor free wi-fi. Food also not available, as the focus is strictly on coffee. Adding these characteristics together, coffee here becomes a more intimate experience, with less to distract from it. Based on one visit to enjoy a morning cortado and cappuccino, theirs are very good, solid artisanal expresso drinks. There are also pourover, cold brew, and teas. Come for a cup to go, or take a few minutes to enjoy at the counter.

Café Grumpy in fact can makes me less grumpy, especially when I am dying for a caffeine fix after my friend driving around around around the blocks looking at for a parking space… kind of making me dizzy? No laptops can be a blessing sometimes, especially when I just want to find a place to chill out and enjoy a good coffee! Yes Café Grump does deliver! Our Cortado and cappuccino are both nicely done. Strong bold roast and great latte art. The bar area is a nice place to hang out and chat with your friend a little…
