Elite Kickoff for the All-Starr Challenge at Canopy Bar

Unilocal kickoff party for the All-​Starr rum challenge… at a roof top… who wouldn’t be excited… Was so happy to be «in» for this event, it would be my FIRST Elite BK event… YAY!
We arrived ON TIME… I know pretty crazy stuff already… lol Place was easy to find, its a corner spot. Entrance was a little confusing, took us (me, my honey, and some other Unilocalers) a few Unilocal signs to figure out it was a side entrance. Two big bouncer dudes in front, looking like it was 12AM on a Sat…“calm down guys, we’re just Unilocalers looking for a good time!” We check in, space is okay, not so big, and not so trendy. Up to the roof top we go, kind of corny green grass carpet everywhere. Roof top is kind of small and split into 3 really small levels, with a few benches on each level… it was cutie… in a small, I’m scared of this spot if it gets really crowed type of way. Sky was clear and bright, great view of the city. We did get a quick drizzle of rain going by, but nothing to stop us from the challenge we were presented with! We got Unilocal Pins when we checked in, each table had a bucket on it, we where to give our Unilocal pin to best drink.
the drinks… Okay so lets get down to business… rum tasting! 4 different drinks, being mixed up by bartenders at different stations, 3 outside on the roof top and one inside. Bartenders where working hard, it was really hot! All where really friendly and engaging.
All with starr African rum…
*The Black Panther… whiskey, fresh lemon, and white wine, kind of strong tasting, not really for me.
*La Noix Passionne… passionfruit juice, marie brizard liqueur apry, and peach nectar, served with a fresh strawberry… sweet and yummy! This was runner up for me!
*False Start… sherry, lime juice, ginger and cinnamon syrup… who knew cinnamon would go so well with rum!!! I def had a few of these, ya know to «make» sure I liked it of course… this one WINS my pin, best drink there!
*Zambee’Zi Cocktal, Extra Fancy… fresh lemon juice, yellow chartheuse, scotch, and a spring of thyme. This was good, but strong! Bartender was rockin that table and had the crowd going!
One LIL negativO… event was supposed to have «bites»…NO food for us rum drinking Unilocalers, heard the kitchen wasn’t ready yet. FAR be it from ME to complain about an event… which I love and appreciate so much… lol…BUT its hard drinking rum, under the hot sun, on an empty stomach (who eats before an event???, even when its bites I’m stuffed… lol), on a sunday, when we may or may not have been drinking the night before. Maybe the owner could have postponed this? Lucky us lots of great food near by, most of us Unilocalers stumbled our way to food afterwards.

Sunday Funday!!! That completely summed up the event and what made it even more fun was that it was part of the All-​Starr Rum Challenge for best cocktail with 4 different drinks stations.
Sadly, the kitchen was down so some people maybe had too much drinky drinky which only drove the party later into the night… onto the venue and the event itself.
Finding that actual entrance was a little tricky for me and some of my friends. We went through the main entrance. The actual venue looks pretty cool. There was a night club room… and lounge-​y live-​music kind of room. And then the actual space we entered had a jungle-​like theme with soft green walls and a stairway to the upstairs. Once we were all upstairs, a bar greeted you with the first cocktail option provided by the Canopy Bar itself… The Black Panther… there’s not much room in this little balcony area so I would suggest moving on a fast as possible… not a place to linger.
Then up the short set of stair to go outside to the rooftop area where we encountered two more tables with two more drink options and multi-​tiered rooftop top hanging out options… the top level had seating. It was a cool set-​up. The west side gave you awesome views of the sprawling-​ness that is Manhattan. This place is narrow also… but I kind of liked the set-​up. If you go over to the east side, you discover as alley way that leads to underneath the tiered seating area to yet another area with a ping pong table, turf and another bar table.
The event was good. Lots of good people. Lots of goofiness. Lots of hilarious to enough and fun in the sun without being insanely hot. I made sure to try all the drink more than once to make a super informed decision about which was the best. There was even a feel-​good light summer shower to accompany the event… very welcomed by me.

I LOVE rum! Like a true Caribbean.

I tried all cocktails… numerous times.
Which drink had the passion fruit juice & decorated with a strawberry? He got ALL my buttons. ;) right in yur bucket, boy.
I’m a sucker for girly refreshing drinks that sneak up on you rather than punch you in the face at first sip. So that drink was a winner in my book!
The rooftop is cool with not-​so-​secret sections decked (no pun intended) out in fake grass. Kind of felt like we should have been playing a game or something but that sun was BEAMING. Nice view too though my vision was hazyyyyy.
I looked like a sweaty meatball + rum cocktails + view of Manhattan + big ass security + my Unilocal peeps= a good ass time!
Yeah there was no food. Get over it. But what was up w the music? Turn it up!!!

So, what’s the challenge? As part of the All-​Starr Rum Challenge, the Elite Kickoff for the All-​Starr Challenge promoted Unilocalers to indulge on and then vote for their top favorite Starr African Rum cocktail shaken and mixed up by some great bars around the BK area. Delicious, cold rum kept things cool and our thirst quenched on a hot summer’s Sunday atop the awesome Williamsburg rooftop at the Canopy Bar. Nature decided to also surprise us mid-​way into the event with some summer rain just to extinguish the heat.
Drinks were aplenty with 4 drinks stations throughout Canopy; one inside, two at the front, and one at the back. The 4 stations each provided a different cocktail featured/​served by a different selected sponsor/​bar from Brooklyn, namely — Zambee ‘Zi from Extra Fancy, The Black Panther from The Canopy Bar, La Noix Passionne from Huckleberry, and lastly, False Start from Donna.
My favorite, hands-​down was the Zambee ‘Zi. Deceivingly strong, but with sweetness that really gave a punch of awesome flavor (see photo for ingredients and recipe). All cocktails were very tasty though. As for food, well, there was none, but at least there was plenty to drink! As for the venue, the rooftop is not very wide-​open, but its multi-​level layout helped split off the rooftop to 3 sections; one with shade, one with lots of sun, and one with better views from up top.
Thanks Peter D., Unilocal,the Panther Room & Canopy Bar, plus all featured bars and the bartenders; I had a really great time at this one. I have a ton of love for BK especially, so it was more than just awesome to be able to attend this event. The endless delicious rum cocktails, seeing BK, and the fun company of new/​familiar super-​cool people really helped to kick off the start of my week.

This was my first BKLYN event and I would like to thank Peter D., the Unilocal squad and the Canopy Bar for making my Sunday AWSOME!!! The Canopy Bar is located doors down from the Wythe Hotel. The Canopy Bar has an amazing rooftop view of Midtown, Long Island City and Brooklyn of course. As you sign in, we were asked to take mini Unilocal pins to serve as our voting chips which added an extra flava to the process.
As you walk up the stair you run right into the bar. They were serving the Black Panther; (1 ½ oz. Starr Rum, 1 fresh squeeze of lemon, 10 fresh dark grapes, 2 teaspoons of brown sugar and top w/​wine) in doors. As you walk outside, there were multiple tables set up throughout, each featuring a different drink, but all with the same rum base.
The outside drinks were:
Zambee’zi Cocktail: Starr African Rum, fresh lemon juice, honey, yellow chartreuse, smoky scotch, and spring of thyme.
La Noix Passionne: Starr African Rum, orgeat, passion fruit juice, Marie brizard apry and peach nectar top with a strawberry.
False Start: Starr African Rum, lustau amontillado sherry. Lime juice syrup and cinnamon syrup.
I tried them all and found that my personal favorite was «False Start «, a delicious mix of everything so smooth and refreshing.
Once again, I would like to thank Peter D for a memorable BKLYN event and thanks to all my fellow Unilocalers.

As I was coming in a group of about 10 Unilocalers were leaving. this had to be about 30 minutes into the start of a fun rum challenge. Maybe the rain drove them away? Because the drinks were great!
The venue is really pretty, but I must say the steps are kind of crazy for a bar. I’m not a big drinker, but I can’t imagine it being any fun going up and down steps if you’re a little buzzed, like many of us Unilocalers were.
What a great day to be on the roof! I came into this kind of blind, not knowing exactly that we would be trying out several different mixes with African Starr Rum. Once again, I’m not a big drinker but loved tasting everything. I loved how everything was already set up, so no Unilocal Zombies waiting at the bar for eye contact with a bartender or dudes stepping in front of the short ladies for attention and a free drink. Each drink was good, but I loved the one that tasted like the holidays, called the Donna (Starr Rum, Lustau Amontillado Sherry, Lime Juice, Ginger Syrup, Cinnamon Syrup) and it got my vote for the best drink on deck.
Thanks again to Peter for putting on a fun event. Got the email about the food, good think I pre gamed my stomach for it!

Summer solstice after party with a slammin’ view of Manhattan & beyond. The Panther room with it’s 70’s retro vibe rocked– green velvet walls-​love that.
The coctails and mixologists were awesome and loved the False Start– with it’s limey, mulchy and sherry flavor. The weather held off the storms so lots of fun, and boozin’ was had by all at this «Billyburg» spot with killer coctails. Thank you Peter D.

THE ROOFTOP —
…Is GORGEOUS.
I think it is NOT possible to have a bad rooftop when you’re in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Assuming of course there isn’t a bunch of clothing lines with panties/​draws obstructing the view.
Except of course when you are on the roof and you have miscellaneous pellets of «rain» or other similar bodily fluids going into your drinks.
I stuck to the «guy peeing on the higher rooftop» theory and did my best to avoid the wetness.
Starr African Rum is described as a «LIGHT» rum.
I hate to see what their «HEAVY» rum is.
I felt worse than Ricky Hatton getting demolished by Pacquiao followed by Mayweather.
BUT…

LA NOIX PASSIONNE -
This cocktail’s strong flavors of passion fruit reminded me of my favorite bubble tea flavor whether it be in tea form or slush.
DELICIOUS.
The strawberry floater was a very nice touch.
STAFF —
was for the most part pretty good (bartenders)
The bouncers was well behaved as well but that really could be that they put on their best behavior to garner better reviews as I did read a nasty review (the only review for this place) before I stepped foot inside.
HOWEVER, they did horded us to leave like sheep which would have been fine except other venues who hosted Elite events have actually let Unilocalers stay for much longer not only to fill up space for incoming crowds BUT to also see both sides of their business…
Elite event and regular business hours to boot.
It is not as if they were going to get swamped on a Sunday late afternoon with people having work the following day.
They really could have used the head count anyway.
NOTES — I’m pretty sure every Unilocaler has those snazzy Red frames by now.
But I didn’t see any laying around as I did forget MY shades at home thinking that they will probably by on the tables somewhere.
Not a single shade laid out for a rooftop event. Lol.
Most people had came prepared so I guess it’s just me.
The BATHROOMS ARE A CLUSTERFU*K!
They were by far the smallest bathroom I’ve ever step foot in.
They wouldn’t even be fit to be used by indentured servants.
I had to maneuver 3 times just to get the door closed and for me to be in front of the toilet.
The genius who constructed or rather drew up the blueprints to these bathrooms did not think of how people would have to get in and get out of them.
HILARIOUS.
Not.
But Thank You Peter as always for the invite to your parties and Unilocal as well.

There’s nothing quite like that Brooklyn charm. As my first time at a Brooklyn Elite Event, The All Starr Challenge at Canopy Bar was a great intro! I was actually quite hungover from the rockin’ night before and fortunately grabbed a slice before heading over, but I told my plus one to hold out her appetite. Woops!
No worries, she got a little tipsy and had a ton of fun! The Canopy Bar was a great discovery and also fulfilled a requirement for my pledge to be on one rooftop per week this summer. I loved the rooftop. The setup is unique with three separate spaces. It was nice that there were a couple of couches to lounge on, too. Pretty simple, but any rooftop with a Manhattan view doesn’t need that much décor.
Let’s get to the African Starr Rum! Goodness, I’m so terrible with names, but my favorite was the Donna which I made sure to remember! It was so awesome to have autumn spice in the beginning of the hot summer. It still managed to be very refreshing with those ingredients. Not to mention the bartenders were terribly friendly! They even gave a card for a free drink. I definitely want to try out their joint.
Second in running was the one with the sprig of thyme. Was that the Huckleberry? I liked that, too. All my favorite cocktails tend to be herbal, so that makes sense! I was not feelin’ the drink that was served at the bar inside. I can’t remember the name either, but it was just straight rum and not much workin’ in the mixture.
It was a pleasure to meet new Unilocalers and Brooklynites and some old faces, too. Shout out to Sean S! Panther Room and Canopy Bar is pretty simple. It’s a space with alcohol and a rooftop. In the summertime, it gets the job did. Thanks, Peter D. for a fantastic Sunday Funday! Can’t wait to hit up Brooklyn with you all again.

What can I remember about this event?
–Arrived already pretty inebriated.
–Peter D was one of the first to greet me.
–Drinks kept on flowing.
–Extra Fancy had the drink of the night. Their drink has scotch! And didn’t hurt that it was served by the hottest guy there. What’s his name? Aaron? Chris? Dave? Who also let me tend bar for a hot second. And kept passing me shots regardless I needed a drink or not.
–Met some cool Unilocalers and reacquainted with some familiar faces.
–Left even more inebriated. I blame Aaron/​Chris/​Dave.

Canopy Bar was a good venue. The bar was a bit tricky to find because it’s behind a boutique hotel walking up Wythe Street that also has a rooftop bar (Ides). We actually stepped in there first because they guy at the front affirmed there was a private event going on there. Well after a couple of minutes of waiting in line of the lobby I realized there was no Unilocal balloons or anything remotely Unilocal there. We turned around and proceeded to go down the street.
Anyways, there were alot of interesting beverages served at the venue. I was surprised that the «False Start» by Donna won. I liked the Zambee’zi from Extra Fancy served up all the way at the back level of the rooftop. Shouts to the dope bartender Aaron and his wingman. Went with the wife and 2 Unilocal noobs (guy with a Ukulele and his buddy a BK native) as our +1s and everyone had a great time. Loved chatting with all the Elites and their guests on the rooftop and inside for a bit (due to the rain showers) on a Sunday Funday.
I wisht there was an elevator to the rooftop, as the stairs were a bit more arduous to go down after a few drinks. The views are spectacular for sure and totally digged the back level of the rooftop because of the much needed shade from the heat.

I had a great time! Those drinks really pack a punch. They were so good and tasted like juice and deceivingly innocent looking — until WHAM you really feel it and get a little too gone. Especially with the lack of food, I’m sure there were many a similar situation felt by others. Thanks for making it a +1 event! Definitely needed that +1 to get back to the city, haha. But all four drinks (and a surprise fifth inside?) were incredible.

The rum itself was incredible as well! Did some shots of those to test to see if the rum had any underlying fruity tones. I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s like 80x better than your neighborhood Bacardi. I may even go out and try to find a couple bottles for my own consumption.
The venue was a little sketchy in terms of the neighborhood and I struggled a little to find it. But the rooftop was absolutely gorgeous (except the tacky fake grass — not a fan). The skyline view was incredible. And the mini shower was quite pleasant in terms of cooling everyone down. Other than the lack of food, the only other complaint I have was the tiny bathrooms… Like how is anyone supposed to fit in there? I was fine since I’m a tiny Asian girl — no problems just some minor struggles with closing the door behind me.
I was a little too gone for the bouncers to really bother me. Was everyone not in their happy place? But I do vaguely remember them rudely clapping their hands and telling me to leave. Was that really necessary?
Overall, a very refreshing and solid event. My +1 and I had a blast!

Had fun here yesterday afternoon, the weather was pretty perfect in that, «Oh my Gosh I should’ve gone to the beach, oh cool sunshowers — someone pass me ice, oh gaaaaaaad, the sunnnnnnn» kinda way and truly perfect for roof top shenanigans in a venue that to be perfect honest has never been my scene — as far as I’m concerned the club Output can STAY PUT (har har).
Getting in was a bit confusing as we arrived about 10 minutes into the event and the entrance (and lack of signage) weren’t obvious but my guest and I bumped into Ruggy as we entered and made our way to get our voting buttons and name tags.
After trying all the Starr Rum cocktails (multiple times until I felt confident to vote and confident that I was tipsily in my happy place!) my favorite was the «La Noix Passionne»,(Starr Rum, Orgeat, Passionfruit Juice, Marie Brizard Apry & Peach Nectar) which was created by the folks at Huckleberry Bar and mixed/​served by a super enthusiastic bartender who was sporting a superb red patterned bow tie. I like bow ties, he was winning all around!
My second fave cocktail was Donna’s drink — False Start (Starr Rum, Lustau Amontillado Sherry, Lime Juice, Ginger Syrup, Cinnamon Syrup) it reminded me of a cookie… a delicious rum based cinnamon cookie. Wish I remember who was responsible for that drink — it was delish but alas my second fave due in part to preferring something more fruity and refreshing because of how hot it was outside…
The rooftop itself was quite nice with comfortable sofa/​pillow seating and a dual rooftop system in which one part had fake grass and the other part was just regular white flooring.
Not gonna lie, totally missed the food here because with so much awesome booze flowing my tummy was hoping to sample some of Canopy Bar’s menu (as promised). Not sure if this was a fail on Unilocal or of the venue’s part but yeahhhhh… had some awesome BBQ up the block at Mable’s after.
All in all a fun event — thanks again Unilocalland! :)

A day after developing a heart condition, cirrhosis of the liver and an ulcer at Firefly, I needed lots of rest, water and relaxation… but being Unilocal Elite comes at a price. So I instead got lots of sun, rum and fun.
It was really hot and some complementary Starr rum cocktails were a great way to cool down. The rooftop is gorgeous. Multileveled, great views and lots of seating, the Canopy Bar has a nice little gem up top.
Most people seemed to be enjoying themselves. I luckily ate before hand, so the kitchen not being open didn’t upset me too much but some Unilocalers were left disappointed and/​or with a higher rum to food ratio in their stomach, than they thought they were.
Lets talk about the four drinks. The first drink right up the stairs was the Panther Room’s own Black Panther, which was easily the worst drink of the event. Luckily it was inside, somewhere I didn’t care to spend my time. Up next was Huckleberry Bar’s La Noix Passionne. Now this isn’t my type of cocktail, I don’t care for passion fruit or peach nectar. I’ve heard great things about Huckleberry but I didn’t care for this particular drink at all. That left it between Extra Fancy’s Zambee’zi Cocktail and Donna’s False Start. This was tough one. Both were amazing. Both had super cool bartenders making the drinks. Honestly I could have gone either way but in the end I choose The False Start, which ended up winning. Great minds think alike.
I have to say it was a great way to close a fantastic weekend. Drinks, great weather and fun people to hang out with.
The only issue is with the place itself. Great looking venue, but that was about it. They apologized for the food, which wasn’t a big deal for me at the event, but I was super hungry later and pigged out hard. I also didn’t like the bouncers at the end. Listen I get it, they want to go home and end their shift. However you are trying to promote your business, do you really want your staff kicking people out who are possible future patrons, in such a rude manner. It hit 6 and these guys were clapping, interrupting conversations and I get it. It’s their job, but someone needed to tell them to relax for the event. This was an event where you are trying to hype your business and while everyone loved the look, we didn’t feel like guests.
Thank you to Starr Rum for supplying us with their amazing liquor. Big thanks to the guys from Donna and Extra Fancy, they really did their thing and we saw they were passionate about what they do. As always a big thanks to Peter D. glad to see he could enjoy weekend at home instead of going out of town for another wedding. People are such jerks, getting married and starting families.

I just love Unilocal events on roof tops near the water. We get the additional treat of having an breathtaking view of Manhattan. I would love to watch the fireworks for the forth of July here.
Anyways the purpose of this event was alcohol and man there was a lot of it. I am not a big alcohol drinker so I can’t tell you much about it. It was entertaining to watch the guy with the bow-​tie shaking up drinks.
I am not sure how people drink so much without any food. Where does the all alcohol go?
I also love that we were able to switch scenery from the cool air condition bar to the rooftop with an amazing view.
I was not a big fan of the bathrooms. There was several bathrooms which was good but the bathrooms were super tiny. I had trouble opening the door because there was not enough space for me and for the door to open at the same time.

This event was a whirlwind of booze and laughter. For those not afraid of crazy-​high humidity the outside rooftop lounge was ideal and complimented with a nice breeze and great view. The music encouraged conversation amongst the inebriated and sober alike and the drinks were feverishly comin’ round to keep up with the massive demand.
There was also an indoor portion featuring it’s own style of rum infused cocktail and a restroom with a legit restroom attendant (who was a very nice man.)
We were handed a pin to vote for our favorite drinks at the end of the night. I was torn between the La Noix Passionne and the honey-​cinnamon drink (sorry! forgot the name). In the end, the honey-​cinnamon drink took the win as I teetered back and forth in drunken splendor.
The only negative was that I was expecting food at this event per the details, but sometimes things fall through that are out of your hands.
I had a fantastic time, and look forward to the next. Thank you to all the bartenders /​bars, Canopy Bar and Peter D as well as all my fellow pretties.

I hadn’t eaten anything since yesterday. So this is exactly how I felt after I found food post the Unilocal event:
Don’t ask. My dad sent that to me a few hours ago. Happy People! Having a long and pretty god awful week, I accidentally on purpose walked in as Chloe O’Brien on my name tag and out as Ingrid. Not at all a reference to 24. Everyone I talked to knew my actual name anyway, some how.. . I enjoyed some of the Starr African Rum cocktails. By its own Starr Rum tastes kind of like vodka. It’s clear and distilled so that makes sense but not quite drinkable as a shot or sipper. Favorites were the one with the gigantic strawberry and the honey cinnamon one. My vote went for the cinnamon which he said was a twist on a daiquiri. Very different and a well balanced and blended medley of flavors. Some of the other drinks I wasn’t particularly fond of like the one with thyme and the panther room berry one on the bottom level inside. The weather was a bit flaky. I enjoyed the rain shower. I loved the view. I don’t like clubs and something tells me I wouldn’t like this venue on a regular night. The bathrooms are also very tiny.
I love Brooklyn. I like Unilocal.But I saw a dude so freaking hungry that he started sucking and gnawing on his sprig of thyme from his cocktail that I felt for him. I feel compelled to not give this 2 stars though because of the amount of effort put in though! Thanks again Peter D.

Having recently moved back to NY from Philly, this was my first YEE in NYC! Canopy Bar was way bigger than I expected — my guest and I hung around the indoor bar at first because it was so hot and humid outside, but once we went outside we were amazed at how big the place was… I didn’t even realize there was a back section until halfway through the event. The view of downtown Manhattan was also great, although the graffitied buildings and construction equipment nearby detracted from it a bit.
I only tried 3 of the 4 drinks served, but my favorite was, hands down, La Noix Passionne. It was super sweet and fruity — just my kind of drink! The bartenders were all friendly too.
Like some of the other Unilocalers here, I was also expecting food to be served, but no biggie since I was planning to go to dinner straight after anyway.

Unilocal squad and Peter D. did an awesome job setting the event up! Problem lies within the staff. Back in my party days, i used to rock it down by the meatpacking district and given the location here, this was def not the caliber it tries to portray.
I realize that the event is over, but why start shouting for us that the parties over like a bunch of animals? Uncalled for and totally unnecessary. Even coming to this place, the bouncer were a bit unprofessional.

On a different note, food was thrown off the menu and drinks was wassup today. 4 different libations, all wanting the buttons aka votes. My button landed in the drink that had a «cinnamony» taste as Lily C. stated (LULz).
