Ellie Herman Studio Annex

There’s likely no other business I’d want to recommend more than Ellie Herman Studio. I’ve been a student for 3 years and can honestly say that Ellie and her staff (especially the brilliant and lovely Kesa Huey) have changed the way I see my own body. They are all so knowledgeable about the workings of the body and muscles and really helped me understand how to work effectively to develop strength and also how to avoid injury in sports and every day life. Not only are classes engaging and challenging, they are informative and I’m able to incorporate what I learn in classes into my every day life. Taking classes here has changed my body so much for the better that I became a runner after years of thinking I wasn’t capable of it. THANK YOU ELLIE.

Love going to Barre classes at Ellie Herman! I’m addicted. Friendly atmosphere and great personal attention with serious results. Looking forward to trying out different pilates class offerings here. Highly recommend classes with Molly Cuff! She’s a ray of sunshine who runs a kick ass class.

I am a big fan of all classes here but loving the new barre class. I have only taken from Molly and Ellie and the class was a great new challenge that kicked my behind. And, I have to say overall, after taking classes for a few months, my body is tighter all over. Close the the effect I see from the reformer class but a lot more cardio. Love it. Try it. I think combining with reformer or mat, springs, props is the best possible workout week. I am obsessed with Pilates and now this is my new fav. Classes at Ellie’s are always professional but a lot more inclusive and relaxed than most studios. I’ve done them all from the strict Pilates classes to Ellie’s. I like that classes, the barre class included, are always different.

I absolutely love this place. I started going to the Annex about a year and half ago to shed some pounds for my wedding.
Now, 30 lbs lighter and strong enough to kick someone’s ass if they tried to steal my wallet, I swear by Pilates.
If you want a diesel work out, go to Liese’s class. Other teachers that are amazing are Ellie herself and Kesa.
If you want the ultimate experience, go to Freddie’s classes. He’s an incredible teacher that really cares about your body and your specific ailments. Freddie will make you feel comfortable and his corrections are precise.
Every teacher is knowledgeable in their craft. Plus the studio is clean, well equipped and intimate. You can easily sign up online through the website and they offer classes at night during the week. Extra plus: 10 person capacity. Prices are fair.
Want cardio? Take the Ball class! You look kind of ridiculous and people stare through the window. But whatever, you’re going to look fabulous and they’re not.
Go, stick with it and get ready for everyone at work to gossip in jealously.

«Meh, I’ve experienced better» exactly describes my feelings toward this place, but I’d feel guilty giving them only 2 stars. To be fair, the instructors are lovely people, and it is a nice, clean, open space. They have extra-​thick Jade mats for use, and clients wipe them down after each class. Even the fellow students I met were warm and welcoming. It has an awesomely positive vibe.
But after my 2^nd session, I was struggling to get myself to use what was left on my Living Social voucher ($ 40 for 5 classes). The classes were just not challenging. I took a couple advanced level mat pilates classes, a mixed-​level springboard class and the «intenSati» class. Barring the intenSati class, I felt like I was at beginner-​level prenatal yoga (no offense to preggos, obviously). I was constantly asking the instructor whether I was doing things properly, like maybe that was why things seemed so boring? But no, every time they’d nod and smile and encourage me to keep doing what I was doing. By the end of each hour, I hadn’t shed a single microscopic sweat drop — and I’m generally a very sweaty person. The music was slow and uninspiring. The classes themselves had too many awkward pauses. As for the intenSati class, it was much more upbeat but still felt like a step aerobics class for the elderly (again, no offense to my homies emirita out there but the class was comprised of 4 women definitely under 35, come on!). Also, we had to memorize and chant a poem about female empowerment while doing the moves, like. throughout the class. From minute 1 to minute 60. And I generally don’t prefer to *think* so much during my nursing home aerobics workshop ok!!!
I reiterate: the teachers are all sweet gals, and judging by the other reviews, this style of exercise clearly works for some people. Just not for me. In this area, I recommend Bend & Bloom Yoga on Sackett for some phenomenal, sweaty-​yet-​relaxing yoga seshs or even the pilates/​barre at Body Reserve down Union St.

The teachers are excellent, each with something unique and helpful to offer. Try a few classes, and you’re sure to land at least that many teachers and classes who are perfect for you! The class size, price, and approach create a lovely package!
Specifically, a comment about a rather new offering, Feldenkrais, taught by Dan Rindler on Monday mornings at 9:30. I took the class initially because some of my best Pilates teachers and dancer friends reference Feldenkrais, and I thought, «Why not?» Since regularly attending Dan’s Feldenkrais class, my Pilates practice has improved dramatically along with my quality of life. The movements are small and the mental approach is gentle, yet the benefits and change are huge! I have a much more solid, flexible, and intrinsic awareness of how I move, can move, want to move… Give this a try — you will be glad when, in a few weeks, you start to have little epiphanies. That will happen, and you may just connect the dots to your new Feldenkrais practice!

This is a nice clean space, and Ellie is kickass. If you’re more advanced, schedule your springboard classes with her for a challenging and rewarding experience.
Classes are a little expensive for general trainers, but the Groupon (LivingSocial, etc.) deals keep me coming back.

Take the intensati class with Chantall. Absolutely incredible. I can’t seem to go regularly but when I do I feel better for the entire week. The class is designed not only to make you sweat but also to lift your spirit. Highly recommended.

love love love Ellie and her team of instructors. They are amazing! The studio is lovely, small, intimate and friendly. Her instructors are well trained. Pilates is my salvation! and I lucked out in finding Ellie’s studio. There are great package deals to get you started.
In terms of improvements, it would be great if the instructors went around and checked everyone’s form. a light touch works miracles. Mirrors would help too.

A Groupon brought me here. I’ve been a personal fitness trainer for 25 years so I’m pretty discerning. I took 3 classes with Ellie Herman: all int/​adv Pilates Mat and Springboard. Ellie is an excellent teacher. She is hands on, making individual corrections while still keep the momentum in the class. She creates the class as she goes along based on the strengths and weaknesses of participants. I leave feeling aligned, worked out. more centered and with a clear mind. But best of all, Ellis is funny, smart and witty, and makes the class feel like you’re all in on something with her. Can’t explain it but you’ve got to try it.

I suffer from double herniated discs in my lower back and was seeing a traditional chiropractor for therapy, but wasn’t seeing any significant improvement. I had heard that pilates would be great therapy for my back and took the plunge after stumbling across an amazing deal on free classes at Ellie’s Annex studio when it first opened.
I have to say that in knowing nothing about pilates, I really lucked out finding Ellie, her studio and an amazing personal trainer she recommended, who has been helping me tremendously during this difficult time of restrengthening and relearning how to move my body.
At the Annex, I’ve taken classes with several of the instructors, but love classes with Ellie. She is aware of my injuries and makes sure that I get the attention I need, even when there’s a full class. She is really an amazing instructor.
Due to the severeness of my injury and the fact that I surf, skate, bike and am an all around active person, Ellie recommended I start private trainer sessions. I have been working with Denise for over 6 months and now have a completely different understanding of the human body and how we move. I have not had severe back pain or anything close to the pain hat I used to suffer from regularly since I’ve been working with Denise and have been on a regular pilates regimen. Ellie’s studio has helped transform me back into the strong, active individual that I used to be, and for that I am grateful. I highly recommend the Annex studio and the Union Street studio.

I’ve taken 2 classes at Ellie Herman. One with Chantall, the other with Ms. Herman herself. I liked both. The studio is clean, though small, and the equipment is ample and modern. The prices are reasonable, especially if you take advantage of one of their package deals. The only critique I have would be of the terminology used to describe the classes. I attended a class taught by Ellie that was labeled «mixed» which the website seemed to imply would welcome people of all abilities and levels. I arrived at the class and was questioned in front of the class re: my Pilates experience and then told that it was really for advanced students only. I was allowed to stay but several times during the class the instructors and students commented on how they disliked having to slow down for beginners. They were talking about a class that occurred in the past but it was still somewhat awkward considering I was one of 6 people and doing my best to keep up and not stick out in any way. I’ll use the rest of the classes in my package but I was a little turned off by the insidery attitude. Hopefully that was just a one-​off.

I am new to this studio and here to write that I am very satisfied. There are so many pilates studios out there but this one, in my opinion, is top knotch. I started pilates because I have bicep tendonitis. My physical therapist told me to strengthen my muscles, first and foremost. She recommended Ellie Herman. I’ve been taking classes throughout the summer and started with a great, affordable package price. I’m so glad I did. I love Freddie and Leise as teachers. They are very confident and knowledgeable which makes you feel great about your workout there.

After training and running a half-​marathon, I was ready for some restorative exercise. I joined Ellie Herman about a month ago, and have enjoyed every class I’ve taken in the past few weeks. In addition to being helpful and instructive, the teachers are all kind, patient, and warm. I felt welcomed right away! The studio has a very positive vibe. And the small space is perfect for more one-​on-​one attention. I already feel a difference in my physique, my energy level, and my outlook.
