Sad to see they’ve moved to Brooklyn from Manhattan; but I will write my praise as if that hadn’t occurred. Typical new York; no tradition is safe. The(now former) Gus’s Pickles was astounding and superb. A mecca for those who adore pickles and pickling. If the re-location and name change has not altered their products or their quality, this is another ‘must-chow’ in New York.

This place just moved to Classon & DeKalb. They hung out a shingle on a quiet residential street off the beaten path. We walked by at 9:30 last night and saw ten giant barrels, a woman scooping stuff out of them, and a tiny lit sign that said«Pickles.» When we went by the next day it turned out that the barrels contain fantastic things like pickled beets, pickled mixed vegetables, pickled hot peppers, olives, sauerkraut, and five different kinds of pickled cucumbers. We got a bunch of stuff, all great, but the beets were the best. They were delicious, and I paid $ 3 for the same amount and quality you get from the hipster picklers at the Brooklyn Flea for $ 8. I am real happy these folks moved in.

As a person who makes his own pickles, I can testify that they have excellent pickles. I have bought quarts and pints of their half sours, three-quarter sours, full sours, spicy pickles and sour tomatoes and I’ve never been disappointed. The prices are very reasonable and the pickles are carefully packed so you don’t get any brine leakage. It’s a small outfit and they occasionally keep irregular hours. So if you’re coming in from ‘far away’, call ahead. You will not be disappointed. (They’re very close to Greenwood Cemetery, so you could 25th St subway stop and walk through the cemetery, then pick up the F/G train on the other side. It’s a nice walk.)

Pickles are pickles or so you think., I like barrel pickles and everything here is pickled. Pickled Pickles, Pickled Tomatoes, Pickled Peppers, Just about everything you want is pickled. They have non pickled stuff as well. This is the famous Guss’s Pickles that for years was on the LWS but in order to stay in business, moved somewhere else and changed the name. According to the owner, nothing’s changed but I didn’t know the difference.

Is this place even still open? The sign outside their store says they have moved a few stores down to a bakery. While there are barrels and a sign for the pickles inside that is about all you will find. The«bakery» was a nearly empty store with broken down shelves and empty pickle barrels. I had such high hope for a place with such a great history to move to my neighborhood but alas it seems to have fluttered into the wind.

Today I noticed Ess-A-Pickle was the Brooklyn Weekly Unilocal. So drove down to Borough Park thinking to buy some pickles. Walk up to door, locked. Hours posted say it should be open. Ring bell, no answer. Finally call number on awning, a woman answers. Asking if she’s opens she casually tells me no. It was too cold and she had some chores to take care of at home. Oh well — no Guss memories relived today. I suggest calling ahead.

The pickles are just as good as they were at the LES location. It’s kind of sad that such an iconic store that harkens back to a different New York has to relocate to stay in business. The upshot is great pickles for all of us in Kensington! Highly recommend the spicy pickles.

Formerly known as Guss Pickles of Manhattan, this is the new location in the Boro Park/Kensington neighborhoods of Brooklyn. They gave me a pickle to try when I placed my order of a quart of new pickles and which I found mild and refreshing. The longer they sit in brine the more cured they become. I also took home a a pint of fresh sauerkraut. Both items were fully packed with plenty of brine. More than pickles they have their own pickled Giardinera, Marinated Mushrooms, hot or sweet peppers, sauerkraut, tomatoes, mustard, sweet relish, hot relish, and lemons. I’ll try the mushrooms next, and the hot relish was also tempting. Hours posted are: Sunday to Wed 9:30 to 6pm, Thurs 9:30 to 9pm, Friday 9:30 to 2pm.
