This is a bar and restaurant with great but loud music and lots of tvs. Mostly they serve alcohol — no soft drinks — but the food is an unexpected delicious surprise! Don’t be fooled by the«higher priced» meals — they are huge! Best mole I have had — I had cheese enchiladas with mole sauce and couldn’t finish it all — amazing sauces too!

I am still a bit confused as to whether this place is more known as a bar or a restaurant. I came here at around 9:00pm on a Saturday; the music was extremely loud, TVs were playing soccer matches and two tables had ice buckets of beers. It kinda threw me for a loop since I was there to have dinner and possibly a decent conversion… The latter didn’t happen since I could hardly hear myself. The place is relatively small or some might say average for a restaurant on 5th Ave. There were three staff members on hand, one of whom seemed to have been the dedicated bartender, all females and all standing behind the bar. Owing to the size of the restaurant the staff was more than enough to give efficient service. But that wasn’t exactly the case. No one on staff seemed to know a word of English, It was unbelievable… Not a word! I get it, it’s a Mexican restaurant but it’s not just Spanish speaking ppl who eats Mexican food. Thank Goodness my friend was there with me and for the very little that I know. The food was pretty good, The tacos arabes is amazing and the consome de chivo is a must(yum), The margaritas were not so strong but tasty. I would just do take out next time, not the kinda experience I want for dinner.

Held my mothers surprise 50th birthday party here on Saturday Jan, 18th, 2014. PRO: –We got a sweeeeet deal(pre-fixed dinner) for our party(had about 45 people there) –Paulina, the manager I think, is super sweet and knows how to work with you –Food was great –The chef is awesome, very nice guy. –Small…so intimate? You decide… –Full bar — likeee that ish. –Paulina worked well with us, she let us hide a bunch of Mariachi’s in the back of the restaurant too. Lol. The surprise was priceless. CON: –The place is super small, I uploaded pics of the inside and outside. –The two other waitresses she hired for the party sucked. Well, one was sweet and worked with me all night, the other girl? DAMN, i dont even know why she was there. Lol. She was just blessing us with her presence I guessssssssss. –It was really unorganized and my sister and I had to really take over for the night. We became the waitresses for the night, and we gave a lot of the orders. I would have preferred to just be a part of the party, but instead was working the floor all night. Smh. –Was told that the place held 60 people, but we only had at the most 45 people and there were no seats left. I stood literally all night, no kidding. Verdict: Will def come back for dinners and stuff, but will def NOT throw a party here again, it was too small(unless you have under 30 peeps).

This place used to be Sunset Spots Bar and Restaurant, and it shows. It’s still very much more bar than restaurant, especially judging by the staff. Our waitress prioritized taking shots over taking our orders. She was drunker than I’ve ever been(and I work in advertising). We also heard no fewer than 3 glasses shatter during our meal. Anyway, service was super slow and she didn’t even acknowledge us flagging her down when we were in plain sight. The place is also loud, with Pandora set to Mexican music. So you can’t really have a conversation with anyone, and the waitresses(whose first language is clearly Spanish) are hard to understand/talk to. Anyway, the food: I ordered the mole poblano with pork(and of course, got chicken instead). It was decent, but the sauce was weird tasting. I’ve had better poblano. The spicy pork taco was my favorite, but it wasn’t spicy. The taco a la pastor was alright, but definitely not off the doner like it’s supposed to be. The chicken flauta was not good at all. Take a look at the picture I uploaded. The chicken was the super processed kind like you’d get in a cafeteria or prison. Anyway, towards the end of the meal, we asked for the check and the drunk waitress came back and gave us the total in Spanish(which was hard to hear over the loud music). Had to wait another 5 minutes for them to bring us a physical check. Took another ten minutes for them to collect the check from us(but they take credit cards, which is nice).

More like 4.5. This place was a worthy alternative for my wife and I after we went for what we planned on for our last outing to Tacos Matamoros. Matamoros was closed for what their sign stated«closed for repairs». In NYC terms we all know what that means, it probably won’t open again. Fuego Royal was impressive though, enough to more than make up for our disappointment. The tacos were better than matamoros, their service was better, the digs cleaner, and the drinks stronger. Even their Guacamole was fresher. I’ve left NYC, but for anyone left who needs an amazing Mexican fix this will be your place. Try the«tacos arbanas» not exact spelling there, it is a spicy pork leg marinated in herbs and vinegar, it is stunningly amazing and hefty generous portion. Our drinks were fresh made in front of us, unlike the giant jug pours at matamoros. Long live Fuego Royal!!! If I return to NYC and need Mexican I’m headed here!!!

My co-workers and I been here several times and we always get exceptional customer service. The food is delicious. The Sangria is marinated with cinnamon and other spices, it’s just so yummy. This is a quality Mexican Restaurant, clean, delicious … I dare say the best in Sunset Park.

With a number of Mexican restaurants in this area of Brooklyn, it wasn’t a question of finding one, but more like«which one?» My first choice apparently went out of business, my second choice didn’t even have a bar, so my third choice was the eventual«charm» when I found Fuego Royal along Fifth Ave. Far from busy with only two guys in the whole place, I had no trouble finding a stool. The one guy was controlling the jukebox with a mix of Mexican tunes while the other guy watched a soccer match playing on Univision above the bar. I liked the look of the place with the brick walls, simple décor and natural light coming in through the windows above. Although the bartender promptly gave me a menu, she seemed generally disinterested in actually tending the bar. Once she eventually came back over, I gave her my drink and good order simultaneously: three tacos(two chicken, one spicy pork) and a regular margarita. The drink was decent, but tacos were so-so. I always like the double tortillas, but the pork wasn’t very spicy and the chicken was average. They just seemed a little bland overall. But for only a couple bucks apiece, I didn’t feel too horrible. However, it was the $ 9 margarita on my bill that got my attention in the end. Ouch. No wonder the bartender kept glancing at my empty glass without offering a second round.

The food was delicious and the right price. BUT the service was slow and we asked for our leftovers be wrapped up, and they forgot which was disappointing. The overall atmosphere was just okay for me(music too loud and tv was playing at the same time). What we ate: chicken chalupa(fantastic!!!), steak and fries(steak was seasoned with rosemary and well cooked and the fries were divine), tortilla soup(a little too salty but a large portion). We’ll be back but for take out.

I live in Park Slope, where we are over saturated with busy restaurants, so I was happy to get some good advice to venture a bit southward to find some authentic Mexican fare in a quiet setting. My husband and I visited on a Monday night and were immediately greeted by a very friendly staffer who made us feel like regulars. Although we’ve spent a lot of time in Texas, close to the Mexican border, we discovered items on Fuego Royal’s menu that we weren’t familiar with. The staff was so helpful in explaining everything to us. We wanted to try a number of dishes, so she recommended a few to share. Everything was nicely plated, delicious and perfectly seasoned(not to salty and just enough spice). We just had wine and beer, but we saw some amazing cocktails going by to other tables. The crowd was a nice mix of families, couples having a romantic evening, and a few locals at the bar. We really felt like we were in a casual neighborhood place, refreshing after the onslaught of tourists stampeding through Fifth Avenue in the Slope on their way to or from the new Barlcays Center. We look forward to returning to Sunset Park to try more, maybe even some of the cocktails! One important note: Unilocal says they take credit cards — but they are CASHONLY.

Love, love love this place. Great food, atmosphere and service. Well worth the drive or short subway trip from Park Slope or Bay Ridge(especially because it is not far). You may think all the Mexican is the same in this area but Fuego Royal will prove otherwise.

Hello. I am not one of you. I am from another state entirely(okay, so I am like you.) I was born and raised in North Texas(Dallas proper), and have lived in such exotic places that you might know as Sevilla, San Diego, and Denton. Okay, so the last one was not so exotic… As for this restaurant, I simply don’t have enough good things to say. I recently moved to this barrio from Spain, SoCal and North Texas and I must say, without any reservation, that this is my new favorite spot in Sunset Park. Yes, I am resident– of the area south of 44th street. Yes, I am noticing a change in the demographic of the area(more white people.) Yes, it is changing. It is «gentrifying». This might be a good thing or a bad thing. I consider it to be a «meh» thing. I am more likely to be exposed to better food, less crime, and a more passive population. You will also see a vanishing of the local, mostly hard-working Mexican and Chinese culture– soon to be replaced by strollers, hipsters, and bicycles. It’s expected in an untapped, untouched neighborhood such as this one. Sunset Park is basically everything you ever wanted out of the other hot-hoods without the exorbitant rent prices and pretentious eateries(give it time. It will surely catch up.) As for the restaurant at hand… While I genuinely enjoy the majority of the family-style Mexican and Chinese restaurants in the area for their uniqueness and certain type of «blue-collar”-ness. I am honestly relieved and a bit perturbed that such a place as Fuego Royal would«pop-up» like it has, in the last four weeks. I’m perturbed… because the jig is up. I had the tacos(Chicken and Spicy Pork). The spicy pork was just that: good and spicy. I’ve noticed that NYC has a lower tolerance for spicy food, so I usually order everything REALLY spicy to give it the kick that I’m used to back home in Texas, however this spicy pork was perfect. The chicken was really well seasoned, flavorful as all get-out. Hands down the best tacos I’ve had since moving here. Next time I’m going to try the quesadilla, and the tostadas pulpo borracho. Ask for Luis, he’s the head Chef. He will provide you with a recommended tasting menu, show you pictures of his culinary creations, and will have you asking around for local property values. Please, come to this incredible restaurant. It’s got everything Manhattan has(style-wise), except that it’s really affordable. A true local gem for the rest of us that live here, and my new favorite. Viva Sunset Park!!!

It’s been a long time coming, but Sunset Park residents finally have a «Park Slope» style restaurant smack dab in the middle of their neighborhood for those looking for that kind of fare. Don’t let the typical awning-style sign that you’ll see upon arrival fool you into thinking that the interior will resemble an experience similar to that of other casual, family-style restaurants in the area. Formerly«Sunset Sports Bar,» the new owners of «Fuego Royal» completely remodeled the interior to take full advantage of the building’s exposed brick interior and sunroof allowing for vibrant natural lighting during daylight hours. Arrive to a cozy, candlelit dining room and a full bar running the length of the restaurant. The Menu allows those to enjoy a modernized Mexican-American menu, which is a nice twist in regards to keeping with the local feel of the neighborhood, but allowing those to stick around the nabe on a chilly Saturday night and not have to take the B63 to Bay Ridge or Park Slope just to enjoy a nice cocktail. The cocktail menu includes those such as a Chocolate Margarita, Pisco Sour, a Manhattan, Bloody Mary, the«El Diablo» etc. Dinner options use seasonal ingredients, and build on the Mexican-American Theme. Options include Calamari, Mexican Mussels, Manilla Clams, Green Ceviche, etc, for appetizers. Salads include a beet salad, cactus salad, avocado salad, etc. Main courses include options from steak, tacos, enchiladas, burgers, and Mexican style pasta. Dessert included a panna cotta dish with blueberry. In short, for a quick, tasty and cheap fix, the neighborhood offers plenty in regards authentic Chinese, Mexican, and pizza options. However, for those living near or on Sunset Park’s business improvement district on 5th ave(especially south of 44th street) and looking for a place with more ambience and classic cocktail drink selections, along with a tasty food menu, this is your place.
