Whoever«Shae» is, methinks he/she needs to go to cooking school :( I’ve been intrigued by this place since it’s nice to support local businesses and there are few options in Coney Island aside from Chinese takeout, pizza, and Puerto rican buffet foods. Curiosity killed the cat; in my case it was my stomach! Sadly I didn’t check Unilocal beforehand. Since they had the tables blocked off, I decided to get a takeout meal after seeing oxtail on the menu. Lesson learned — never order from place that serves food from a buffetline if you can’t actually see the buffet. They must encourage takeout so people don’t realize how bad the food is until they get home! Although oxtail is usually pricey, like Celeste B, I found prices for other items to be on the higher side(come on, this is the hood, people!). For my $ 12(cash only, ugh!) I got a container of rice and peas(oily and over cooked), a decent sized serving of the fattiest oxtail ever, some hardened chunks of what were supposed to be plantains(see picture), slice of cornbread no thicker than my pinky, and a can of Coke. Needless to say, the coke was the best part of the meal. I don’t know how this place is still in business — either their customers have iron stomachs & money to waste or it must be a cover for an elaborate money laundering scheme.

After passing by this restaurant in my area for years I decided to finally stop in this past weekend. The staff seemed friendly when I entered but it did take sometime for my order to be taken. The menu was pretty small and the prices were pretty high from what I observed. I ordered the fish and shrimp combo that came with one vegetable and one regular side. For the vegetable I chose collard greens and the second side was macaroni and cheese. The wait was not very long but they did cook the fish fresh and I was offered a free soda. However, I was not sure if the soda was part of a special or if it was because they knew that my order would be incomplete? There was no mention of free soda on the menu at all. Once I was told that my food was ready it was packed but when I asked for condiments they had none? Fish with no tartar sauce? This was strike one for me because I feel that once I placed my order I should have been informed as a courtesy that there were no condiments to go with it. I didn’t make a fuss over the lack of condiments because I knew that I did have some at home. BUT when I got home that evening to try the food there were NO shrimp! There were two pieces of fish and a huge amount of the average tasting side dishes. Was this the reason for the offer of the free soda? The cost of shrimp and a can of soda do not compare! I didn’t even bother to return and complain — I just won’t return at all.
