Stopped in last night for dinner. The guy behind the counter was incredibly polite and mild mannered. I got the jerk chicken and my boyfriend got the curried goat stew. The chicken wasn’t very spicy, but still tasted great. The goat was also super yummy. The medium size lasted me two meals. They really pack the counter full with food. Good food. Great price. Definitely going back.

The Jerk Special in the afternoon is definitely worth the visit and the addition of great jerk chicken, with this great spicy sauce, is the added bonus.

Love this place. I usually come here for the curry goat with rice and peas. I tasted the stew chicken and it was good also, but I like Golden Krust’s stew chicken better. The small plate is $ 6, the medium is $ 8, and the large is $ 10. The food is good and cheap.

The food is just not great given the number of jerk center competitors a few blocks away. In fact the food was a bit bland. You may be saying that I should have added more sauce, but most jerk chicken has flavor even without dousing it it additional sauce. Takeout food only. If I lived close, I’m certain that I’d visit, but otherwise…

First off the chicken is NOT Jerked. Authentic jerk chicken must either be smoked with wood chips(a rarity in the States) or over a coal-fired pit. At the least, if an oven or gas fired grill is used, one must use an amazing jerk rub, as 3D’s on Washington Ave does. Hammonds unfortunately does neither. Their under — seasoned chicken is usually grilled then doused in an optional watery«jerk» sauce or ketchup. Their curries are so-so, expect little more than pieces of fat and bone with an order of curried goat. The oxtail on a good day can be amazing. The popular mac and cheese, more accurately, cheese topped macaroni, sells out quickly, so does the plantains, which they usually run out of, like many a Caribbean restaurant(no excuse, as they are cheap and easy to prepare.) Customer service is consistently good. If you want a more authentic, smoky jerk chicken, check out places on Utica Ave, if not possible — there is always Hammonds as a back-up.

My bf recently moved to the neighborhood, and I’d been meaning to try jerk chicken at one of the many places that offer it around this part of town. Well, one afternoon while I was waiting for the bf to come back from shopping, I couldn’t wait any longer for him to get back and figured I’d get a cheap, easy and quick bite at Hammond’s just a few blocks away. You know a place is gonna be good when the man behind the counter barely says a word to you and simply nods and grunts. The rest of the patrons were all locals(or I presume native to the cuisine), so it must’ve been a sight for them to see this lil girl(i.e. me) make her way in. Well, I’m a brethren of all cuisines, so serve me they must. Despite the fact that I think the chicken had been sitting on the grill for a while, it was still extremely succulent — perfectly juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside. The plantains were also super delicious and almost dessert-like in sweetness. I’m definitely coming back next time I’m in the ‘hood!

Solid chicken, but not worth the walk from Bed Stuy. The chicken was juicy and looked beautiful(better than it tasted), but had very little discernable jerk flavor in the rub. The sauce was a little too sweet as well. I much prefer my local spot, JRS& A Jerk Center, but I’m still on the hunt.

Good food and big portions. Strictly takeout. I always get a medium plate($ 8), which I think is the best bang for your buck. They cut up the chicken for you so that it’s easier to manage. I’ve never tried the BBQ sauce because I always go for the jerk sauce. They let you put as much as you want so you can control the heat. It comes with rice and beans and some veggies(I think it’s cabbage). If you come early enough, you can get some macaroni pie and/or plantains as well. They’ve usually run out of this by the time I stop in after work, though. Try it if you’re ever in the area. It’s good stuff.

Don’t be fooled, I don’t think there are any baked goods on the premises. Basically your choices are jerk chicken with jerk sauce, or jerk chicken with BBQ sauce. And some rice and peas on the side. Take-out jerk chicken spots are a dime a dozen in this neighborhood, but this is really the first place you want to go.
