This place may or may not have changed its name again. Seems to do so every couple of months/years. I don’t go here for dim sum anymore(not since Park Asia and East Harbor opened years ago), but still come here for dinner, so that’s what this review will be about. Most Friday nights, it’s eerily empty. Only a couple of tables filled to the point where you wonder if they’re on the brink of going out of business or if they’re engaging in shady accounting practices. Either way, no wait for a table is a good thing for the customer! They have a pretty good menu, with all the stuff you’d expect at a Chinese dinner(all sorts of chicken, some fishes that I don’t know the English names of, lobster, veggie options, and tons of other stuff). If you like shrimp and don’t hate mayonnaise/salad dressing, order the shrimp/broccoli/walnut dish. The T-bone steak is also a classic, as is the crispy fried chicken. I can’t say I’ve ever ordered a bad dish here. Their portions are also pretty good and the price is very reasonable considering how much you get. Bring a group, bring your family, or bring strangers off the street. You’ll get the most bang for your buck here!

Omg this is one of the worse restaurant I’ve ever been to for dim sum. I came here with my mother for dim sum around 3pm. I sat down and took a sip of my tea and I gagged. My tea was very SALTY! I complained to them and they were acting like they didn’t care. Getting his attention to come over was hard enough. He’s was like oh the person probably put in the wrong thing. Which only means that they add sugar in their tea. Anyways we ordered a few dishes of dim sum and they were all cold and tasted bad. The quality did not even looked nor tasted good. Seriously what type of restaurant serves food like that. No wonder why there were only a few people in there. I came here before it changed its name for dinner but it just went downhill after that. Before this place it was unsanitary too. They had snail piece in the ice bucket. If you want to run a successful restaurant the food should always be kept fresh and warm no matter how late it is. You can’t just let the foods quality slip even though dim sum time is almost over. I will never come here ever again. With the service and food being like that. Even though it is grand open, sorry but I am expecting it to close down soon. Its near the train station but not a lot of people come here because they flock over to the other ones down the street. They know where the good foods at.

The dim-sum is pretty good here, 5 stars for price, 3 stars for the food and service. This place gets pretty packed, it’s a big restaurant but don’t be surprised if they seat you in the same table with strangers. This happens often in restaurants in that area, they will seat you wherever there are extra seats so it can be a bit uncomfortable eating with strangers sitting across from you. A must try dish they have is the durian wrap, it’s a cold dessert with pretty good durian paste(if you’ve never had durian before or heard of it it might be an acquired taste, but being Malaysian, durian is the country’s prized fruit) wrapped in a thin green mochi shell. Delish :)

This place has been through many many name changes. The food still taste good. Dim sum is okay and I get my BBQ meats here. They have a separate corner for takeout, it’s fast and the service is speedy.

I came with my family for brunch, to try out the place. since it has a new name and such. The food is all right in terms of dim sum… very limited in selection though. We definitely had it better in some other spots. My mom had mentioned that with the remodeling, that the owner has definitely changed. Before the makeover, and changing of the new name. I have had dinner at the restaurant before this one, and I really thought that the food was quite good, much better than here. King Star has the most convenient location, very close to the subway. Also with the fact that there was a wedding the first night, my mom remarked that it brought a wave of good luck for the place on prosperity. That’s a Chinese thing. Though with the food quality… and I really am not trying to be picky. Do you know why I gave it such a low rating. the place is very very short staff… the restroom once again remind me that Chinese people are pigs. I rather call my own ethnicity that because it is consistently true. The restroom was so filthy. I really hate to go to restrooms when I am in a Chinese area. This place definitely is not going to see my patronage again.

*review is for takeout service only* FYI– there are 2 lines in this takeout area. One is for the roasted meats/rice box and the other is for dim sum. My ‘ripe’ friend(to the point of being spoiled) and I wanted dim sum so I decided to try this place out. I’ve never had any of the food here since the ownership/name change. I ordered the mini baked roast pork buns. These are a «must have.» The bun itself was soft and the roast pork was by no means MIA. The steamed tripe with ginger and scallion was good too. The tripe wasn’t too chewy nor soft and the flavor was spot on. «Ripe friend’ said he can’t contribute to my review so sorry, folks, I have no idea how the lotus leaf sticky rice or dried bean curd stuffed with pork tasted like. But I’m sure it was A-OK since this place is generally bustling with customers buying food to go.

This is by far one of the few most noticeable dim sum restaurants on 8th Avenue. It is one of the two larger restaurants on the main sector of 8th Avenue Chinatown(see: Pacificana). In the past 4 or 5 years this place has changed management and names 3 times. For quite some time it was called Jade Plaza and then eventually changed to the short lived Diamond on 8th and finally King Star. I have to admit that I never visited during it’s Diamond on 8th phase. I had stopping coming here for dim sum about a year or two before Jade Plaza closed down. Back then the prices were ridiculous and the quality of the food was horrible. The management probably figured that being the closest to the subway(N Train — 8th Avenue) they could jack up the prices and people would have to live with it. Apparantly people didn’t live with it. Major fail. I didn’t come back here for dim sum for at least 4 years until last week. I took my girlfriend and her grandmother out for lunch. Grandma chose the locale. I was a bit hesitant at first but was actually quite surprised. The quality of the food still isn’t spectacular but it’s definitely a step up from the Jade Plaza days. The price wasn’t too bad either. Dim sum for 3 people came out to about $ 15. We ordered quite a few dishes, although there honestly wasn’t much to choose from. I counted a total of three carts going around on that weekday morning. I expect that there would be much more going around on the weekend. Dim sum is a social event. Go with good company. That way even average tasting dim sum will seem a little better. Had I not gone with good company I probably would have been complaining and possibly starting a riot.

It was packed when me, my boyfriend and his mom came here for dinner Saturday night around 8pm. There were people waiting for tables. The food here, though greasy, is very flavorful. A must try is their lobster. It is $ 9 for a lobster prepared the way you want it!

4 stars? really? Well maybe I went on an «off» day… or maybe I am spoiled with all the good Dimsum I can eat in East Los Angeles… or maybe this place just wasn’t good. All I know is that the Dimsum I had at King Star restaurant was pretty bad. Everything tasted old… radish cake was mushy… congee had no taste, some dishes were already cold and the only dish that was GOOD was the Chinese broccoli… and maybe the fried tarot dish was pretty good. I would like to believe that I came on a bad day because this place seems pretty popular. 4 stars overall and the place was packed on a Thursday morning(around 11am). I’m sure there are more carts going around on the weekends and dimsum is probably fresher. But hey, bad day or good day… I paid to eat dimsum… The dimsum place in LA that I always go to is much much better than the dimsum here. Sorry Brooklyn, but no more dimsum from u :(

This is my favorite dim sum spot in the city. I find King star spacious and clean compared to many of the Manhattan dim sum restaurants. King star has a great selection of dim sum items and they also allow you to order dishes off the menu. It’s pretty cheap and an all around fun experience! It is pretty greasy food — and as Austin T. mentioned the food is quite salty. My personal favorites are the scallion dumplings and the sauteed bok choy.

Dim sum service was a little slow, but the establishment was packed and the food was good. They added a few creative twists to common dishes [ie they didn’t have ‘shrimp dumplings’… instead, they added scallops for an equally satisfying dish]. Although I still came out with that too-much-sodium/MSG-dry-mouth feeling that accompanies most of my dim sum experiences, I really enjoyed King Star restaurant and will probably come back if I’m ever back in Brooklyn on a Saturday morning…

With new management and better prices, King Star Restaurant has officially made its debut along Brooklyn Chinatown’s growing scene. It’s one of the most noticeable restaurants along the street and is approximately 1 block away from the N Train 8th Ave stop. Some folks who are familiar to this spot will remember this joint as Jade Plaza or most recently as Diamond on 8th. Unless it was bad management or just simply bad luck, I can’t imagine why a spot this great would result in 3 failed businesses in 5 years. Either way, I was hoping for an improvement from my previous experience here last year. And it was literally the same thing as Diamond on 8th. The wait staff seems to be the same, as was the décor and menu selection. The prices seemed a tad cheaper than my last experience, which is always a plus. Service was also prompt and friendly for the most part. The barrage of Dim Sum dishes tasted about the same as before, with no significant improvement. Of all of the things we tried, the most memorable was their very fresh BBQ Pork Buns, Crispy Turnip Cakes, and Fried Pork Dumplings. While I wouldn’t rate this experience as mind blowing by any means, I would certainly consider coming back when I’m in the area.
