Paws and the City

The store has a nice selection but the girl working seemed more interested in talking with her her girlfriends than helping out. Doesn’t help that I was with my boyfriend and one of the girls started singing Buju Banton’s Boom Bye Bye as we exited. Yes, she sang a song about killing gay people as two gay men walked out of the store. I wanted a refund but did not think I could keep my cool. Will not be back, clearly not LGBT friendly.

Sir Bootsy is mad about this place! It’s a bit of a splurge, but ever since he got his first bath here recently, he has become obsessed with curling up in the bathroom sink. Initially started taking him here to get his nails trimmed, but now he’s gotten so spoiled, he’s getting the star treatment. Thanks for giving my fuzzy, little loverboy the best experience of his life!

I’ve been taking my Mini Schnauzer to this groomer for about a year now, and I have to say I am always happy with the results. I used to take my little guy to a groomer in the city and the results were always mixed. My dog is a hyper little one and I can imagine he must be a little challenging when it comes to cutting his hair. It sure is an exercise in patience when I bathe him at home, but Rachel is very sweet and patient with him and has an amazing hand. He always comes back home super happy and looking very handsome.

My partner and I originally found this groomer on Unilocal and we were a bit apprehensive after reading the mixed reviews. We have a poodle mix named Shae whose hair gets a little out of control at times. She is also whines when my partner and I leave her and will get grumpy when you clip her nails. Needless to say, she is not the most charming dog to groom. When we leave, I will hear Shea crying a bit but there is something about Rachel’s energy or the mood of the place that calms Shae down; she is always calm and happy when we pick her up.
My favorite part is that Rachel is straightforward about the wait time and always asks for clear communication about the cut. If I ever show up and there is something out of place, she will double check with us and never has a problem adjusting the cut while we wait. She clearly just wants to get it right.
You can tell that Rachel loves animals. The first time I met her, she told me a story about her dog who had passed a few years ago and how she could not bring herself to get a new one, so she loves being able to spend her days grooming dogs. Paws also keeps around a couple of cats in the grooming area. I am not much of a cat person but you can’t help but love these creatures! They’re so friendly and sweet. It’s a wonderful opportunity for my dog to socialize with cats.
In sum, Paws in the City was a great find for me and my family. We would strongly recommend their grooming service to anyone who appreciates an affordable groom, and a straightforward and compassionate groomer. Thanks for your great work, Rachel!

I hate to see that this place only has 2.5 stars. We were actually hesitant to try it because of this, but it’s so close, we had to give it a shot. We couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised! We are pretty picky about our teacup poodle’s grooming, and Rachel is amazing! We’ve tried a couple other places in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and are so happy to have found such a great place right in the neighborhood. Rachel is super attentive and Cash loves her. Her cut is always just as requested. Please support this local business!

I just want to echo what my girlfriend has already posted. Rachel is so good with our poodle Cash. The place is always clean, and Rachel has a great demeanor with our puppy. She gives her a great cut each time, whether we keep it a little longer for winter or give her a short summer cut. She’s also open to fixing it if we decide after seeing it, we would like it a little shorter or something. Never gives us a hard time. Can’t beat that kind of service!

Brought my big pittie boy in to have his anal glands expressed. Many groomers won’t perform this service, so it’s nice to have one so close by to my apartment that will.
The woman we worked with was very friendly, speedy and efficient. She’s cut my roommate’s dog’s nails before, and she was great with him also (he can be VERY skittish). She was great with my dog, too.
They fit us in right under the wire, and were reasonably priced. We’ll be back again!

I visited this groomer yesterday (6÷19÷2014) to get my dog groomed. it was an absolute horror. I should have known once I got there and he started to shake from fear. The female groomer seemed very aggressive and rough with my dog. She also tied him up by his neck to groom him which I felt was very unnecessary and uncomfortable for him. Once I picked him up he was inside a cage looking very miserable. Upon taking him home I noticed multiple areas where she cut him to deep n low which has caused irritation and extreme discomfort for him. I suggest no one take there dog to get groom by RACHEL. worst hair cut of my dog life and a waste of $ 80 dollars. now I have to go buy him some soothing crème for his wounds and hope he doesnt get an infection.

I took my beloved cat to be groomed here. My cat looked terrible after he was groomed. It’s been 5 days now and you can still see the shaver lines in his fur. His fur was not cut evenly. His nails are still long despite them being cut. What a waste of 65 bucks. The guy that used to work here was much better than the lady they have there now.

I took my cat here to be groomed. They were very attentive. Very friendly and very welcoming. The space was clean and inviting and the establishment very well done.
My cat was returned about 2 hours later. Clean and groomed and very pleased with herself. I would highly recommend.

My dog doesn’t require grooming services, this is regarding my experience with the retail half of the business.
They have a mouse problem. This has led to my returning two bags of food in the past, after getting them home and finding holes that had been chewed in corners. Today I went and found one bag chewed through, and another that I thought was riddled with mouse holes, but the store keeper assured me that was from the cats scratching the bags. So the cats don’t successfully rid the store of mice, and themselves make salable products unsalable. I bought a different brand of food, took it home, mixed it with my extant dog food, only to find a huge pocket of mold in the center of the bag.
To fix this problem took two hours of my day, as I then had to seek the original food brand somewhere else in brooklyn, and return the purchase; I certainly lost at least $ 25 in the combination of the food I wasted and the mark-​up of the food I bought compared to online vendors (serves me right for buying local).
We all know this place is a drug front, but is it really so difficult to stock salable dog food in a 6×8 closet of an excuse for a pet store? I’m never going back. A lesson I could have learned sooner. Just a glutton for punishment, I suppose.

This review is specifically about the grooming service, nothing else. I have taken my Yorkie to this establishment twice. Each time he has returned with a nicked ear. In fact, the second time, when I picked him up post-​grooming, he was traumatized (shaking and nervous). I am also not good with the fact that you cannot watch the groomer work (or so I’ve been told twice). Twice is once too many times for this place. Not again.

Not really sure what is going on here but on a Thursday @430 pm I would’ve guessed they would be open. Instead I was greeted with a gate down and a glass door revealing a bucket and cleaning supplies… If they still are in business. I would recommend calling before wasting my time coming back over to this location, however as far as I’m concerned, it’s closed to me.

Hello Friends and fellow pet owners! I took my baby better known as Roy-​Al to Paws and the City for the 1^st time today. I’m giving Paws and the City 2 stars instead of 3 stars and I will tell you why.
Let me start by saying that I loved the job the groomer did on my dog. Well done, however, what was not so well done was the service. I hope that Paws and the City can make their place look more presentable. The shop its self was very small an cramped with all the products all over the place. I had concerns when I walked in and the man behind the cash register was not to friendly at all. It seemed like it was all about the money. To top it all off, when I returned to pick Roy-​Al up, the cashier barely even looked up from her cell phone to tell me where I could retrieve my dog. Poor service! It should not be, especially when you have new customers.
Now, back to Paws and the City, there was very little space to sit or even move around. If I was just stopping by to buy some food or treats for my dog, I would pass because it was just does not look inviting.
Unfortunately, the grooming area was not so inviting either. Again, although the groomer did a great job, I may not return because the cleanliness of the place was not so great. I would love for Paws and the city to be cleaner and more inviting to not only the animals but also the customers they serve.

I don’t know anything about the grooming place, but their little pet supply stores is surprisingly well stocked. I think they only carry one type of dry cat food in bulk, but it’s a good grain-​free one. They have also sell the good kind of enzyme cleaner, in bulk, as well as decent cat litters. They don’t carry that really awesome crystal cat litter here, but they’re so nice about it I can’t fault them.
There used to always be one of two ladies working here, a kitty, and rarely another customer. I tried coming by here first thing in the morning once and the opening person had forgotten their key. While waiting for the backup key to arrive they took me to the corner store and bought me a coffee, what sweethearts!
Also, they do delivery on orders over sixty dollars. Which I appreciate as I tend to buy everything in bulk.

I suppose I can’t write a five star review because I’ve never actually stepped foot inside of the store. However, I was in contact with the owner via e-​mail and have placed delivery orders, and they are so awesome.
I emailed the shop to ask if they carried our special brand of cat food — because I was tired of having to pick it up in Manhattan or Park Slope. They said they didn’t, but that they would order it the next time they placed an order. A week or two later I received an email that it was in stock! I called the store, placed an order with my credit card, and received a delivery of my big bag of cat food later that day. It was an easy and painless experience — I’m so glad to have them in the neighborhood!

Paws & the City is a boutique pet store that caters to a particular kind of clientele. They offer organic & holistic nutrition, pet sitting, dog walking, and vet taxis, all in an adorable little place!
I stopped by the other night on my way home from work because my cat was running low on treats and had run out of wet food days earlier. (Don’t worry, I still fed him dry food.) I had just read about them on a neighborhood blog so I decided I would go to support the local business.
I had not realized how small of a space they are but they managed to place dog & cat food, treats, bowls & other essentials, and beds along the walls so it doesn’t feel cramped. The employees are helpful and nice. They also accept custom orders!
Overall, Paws & the City is a nice little store that fills a very specific need: holistic pet nutrition. I hope their business does well because there’s no need to travel to other parts of Brooklyn for wholesome pet food.
