First I will start off by sayign I’ve only been doing Raw foods for a week. So i am not a Raw expert. but I LOVED the food here. I really LOVE Rawstar. This is my second Raw restaurant in NY. I went to Quintessence first whcih is also amazing. I’m so glad I went to Rawstar plus they have a 50% off scoutmob o my meal wa only $ 12. I love the spices in the food, the décor, and I am going back to buy that very reasonably priced artwork! I started off with the falafel recommended by the server. It came out very fast for a raw food place. I loved it. The only thing is the server didn’t ask me which sauce I wanted. But the one they chose(not Tahini I think it was Tamarind) was AWESOME! It was only 3 pieces of falafel so it was enough for me but probably not for a large group. Also keep in mind its raw so the pieces were hard but it was still really great. Second I got the savory tart. I didn’t care for it. It wasn’t savory to me but still VERY flavorful. I think its just cus I don’t like tomatoes that much and there were quite a few. It also has a kind of sweet flavor. So yeah I think the server recommended it cus it is actually a good dish, just not for me. Anyway it was great. Unfortunately there was no dessert when i went which was kind of sad so that’s why i took one star off but I WILL be back. GREAT local raw place: D

i had my second dinner at rawstar tonight, and can only continue my excitement about this establishment. i tried the cheese with sunflower crackers, guacamole with veggie chips, tomato okra, spinach papaya, curried plantains, mango pineapple chutney, and lasagna. everything.was.outstanding. the lasagna is special. if you’re conflicted about what to try, the lasagna is the quintessential dish that proves what rawstar is capable of. it’s a gem, and i hope they continue to grow and thrive. go there now.

I’ve been looking for a business to feature in a new segment on my blog but haven’t found any place that fits into what I am trying to do. That was until my wife and I did a raw foods cleanse. We went on a Friday to reward our discipline during the cleanse. Boy, did they open my eyes to some incredible raw dishes! The staff was very friendly and helpful in explaining their menu. Our food was so good, we ended up ordering the lasagna(which I highly recommend — Saturday is the only day) the very next night! Oh, did I mention the raw cheesecake. I drool just thinking of how good it was. I will definitely be producing a video about this place soon. Besides, it’s an excuse to order more food from them!

This review is super late. I have a friend who is the champion of discipline when it comes to what she eats. She’s explored every type of healthy food nut option from vegan to micro biotic, to gluten free. I can’t keep up. But she claims to still enjoy the experiencing of eating. So I decided to giver her a shot and live in her world for a few hours. She’s been wanting to try Rawstar for a while so I was the overzealous friend who committed to helping her along in the experience. My review of Rawstar is entirely biased as my ability to abstain from any food that I like because 20 years from now it more or may not cause my pancreas to explode is… nascent. Read here: I LOVE meat. Not only do I love meat, but I also prefer my food to be sauteed, fried, boiled, baked, bbq’d…basically I believe the statement«I Love you like cooked food» carries ALOT of weight. You’re taking two major components I love out of the food equation and I’m left with nothing but a blank stare. On the other hand, I consider myself to be generally open-minded when it comes to food. I enjoy the whole experience, from the texture to the flavor. So maybe raw food won’t be that bad. For raw food, Rawstar is kinda pricey(but I heard raw cuisine is labor intensive). I ordered the Curry Tempeh and it was about $ 14. I still don’t know what tempeh is. I don’t think I care to really know what Tempeh is. It looked like a mashed up granola bar that was light and kinda crunchy and my whole being was just disappointed and hungry. It came with a kale & pear salad… that sounds okay(kale is a bit bitter for my tastes) and was just okay. Then I had a side of broccoli, which I figured should be a homerun because I LOVE broccoli. I love it raw or slightly sauteed, so there is NOWAY they can mess this up. Ohhhh… but they did. They CHOPPED that broccoli so fine that it just tasted like watery mush in my mouth with a hint of broccoli. *Ultimate sad face* My friend ordered the lasagna. It was cool, because it was sweet. Like a lasagna pumpkin tamarind pie. The piece that she was served was small. I’m thinking, if we eating raw there should be an abundance of food on the table, like throw me a banana or something. I should be feasting at the Disciples table. I left hungry like a pauper. My friend who is actually into this tip of food crucifixion half way enjoyed her meal. Okay I think she ¾ of the way enjoyed her meal. So if we average that out I think this was a 3 out of 5 star review. Ionized water and all.

Let me be clear, I am giving 3 stars for the food and the additional star for the décor. Though some of the things the people in my group got were better than my order, my pizza was COVERED in pesto sauce to a point where it was almost inedible. I am not close minded about raw food, in fact I really love it. I leave feeling full, without feeling stuffed, it is really wonderful. The food was fresh, and I LOVE the«cheeses» made out of nuts. Of course I will return to try something else, but never again will I get the Pizza with Pesto.

Went here for lunch today with my roommate. I had been meaning to try this place for a while, however, I should mention that I typically hate vegan and raw foods. I can definitely enjoy a vegetarian meal — but am typically just not into the vegan or raw things. That said — I had seen rawstar dishing out delicious looking salads and other things at a street fair last year and it looked pretty damn good. We had the spinach pie with a kale pear salad and kale slaw. We also ordered the chips and guacamole. I thought the salads were very good… really good. And the guacamole was pretty good as well. The chips — not so good. They weren’t crispy(as I think a chip should be) but rather these leathery seed patties. My roommate and I both really enjoyed the salads. She didn’t really like the spinach pie — I thought it was nice and flavorful. The ambience of the place might be the best part. It’s a really nicely decorated calming space. It doesn’t feel like you’re in the city once you step in. The service however, was pretty slow. I’m glad I tried it. And I would recommend it to vegan /raw food lovers… but I probably wont rush back.

Curry Tempeh with Tamarind Sauce Kale and Pear Salad Curry Plantains Nice meal. The kale and pear salad was dressed with a tahini dressing and was delicious. It might have been my first time having kale and I was not disappointed. The greens were slightly peppery and the pear contrasted perfectly with it’s sweetness. The tahini dressing complemented it all with it’s creaminess and slight bitter taste. The curry plantains were a bit smooth and slimy in texture but was still nice. The curry flavor was subtle and complemented he sweetness of the ripe plantains. The curry tempeh was a bit of a miss. I am not sure if it was an error but there was no distinguishable tamarind flavor and the sauce almost tasted like tahini. The tempeh was hard and almost had a burnt flavor. Overall the meal was not bad, however I don’t think I need to return.

GO! I love a juicy steak; however I’m cleansing my body for the spring and this vegan spot satisfies all of my carnivorous appetite. I had take-out tonight and am planing a dinner there tomorrow night with some friends. Can you say hooked?

What a nice little spot! It’s a little off the beaten path for me, but don’t let that intimidate you if you’re not from the neighborhood, you’re easily within 10 minutes of a couple train lines. We ordered some apps and some dinners and they were awesome. I’m pretty sure anything on the menu is great, but if you take my path and just ask the server what his favorite things are, and then order those, you’re in business. Totally affordable, way casual and much better looking than the pictures would lead you to believe. Well worth the trip and the money, and you should go eat here. word.

I dont think I get it. I love salad as much as the next person, but the raw vegan thing is… well…strange. The veggie burger is bitter and chewy, the plantains are… well like baby food. The kale and pear salad is the only thing I really liked. My husband got the spinach pie, also bitter and uninspired. We got dessert, which was icky for lack of a better word to described fermented fruit. I dont know, I like other vegan places but this one… hmm…not so much. Again, maybe I dont get it.

I went here with olé boy & we were both extremely glad we did. First, the space is a vast improvement from when I last poked my head in a while back. Tho still tiny it at least feels relatively comfy & there’s more space than before. The waitress bought us glasses of alkaline water, which they use in & for everything,(I think it’s Kangen & there’s info out there about the health benefits of that) & I appreciated that. We shared the spinach cheese puff appetizer, olé boy had the garlic stuffed mushroom with a side of plaintain & I actually have no memory of what I had except that it, and all the dishes, were dee-damn-licious! First off, I don’t know what it is about raw that fills you up so quickly but I like to eat & am always skeptical about small portions. Tho the portions here aren’t «tiny» I’ve had bigger. No matter! These portions WILL fill you up. Everything we ate was filled with amazing amounts of burst in your mouth flavor, lots of texture and was incredibly colorful. Olé boy kept exclaiming over his mushroom jammy which, as I remember, was a gigantic whole portabella filled with yumminess of some kind or another. I have a sweet tooth & was impressed enough with the plaintain side dish to not feel the need to order dessert. The plaintains are soft & sweet with a hint of curry or some other spice. My dish, whatever it was, was also delicious. Because we were wondering about it, the waitress was kind enough to bring us a complimentary sample of the cashew cheese with flaxseed crackers appetizer. We didn’t like it. Maybe it was because our tastebuds had already adjusted to what we were eating & the flavor of this appetizer got cancelled out, you know, like how you drink something sweet after brushing your teeth & it’s disgusting? The cashew cheese appetizer wasn’t disgusting but we were definitely not feeling it. Anyhoo, my only other small critique is «Mawule, get an updated website already!» The one listed here on Unilocal is blatantly wrong(pictures of cooked chicken wings & ackee? c’mon son!) & needs to highlight the food actually served here. Quite confusing. Outside of that, Rawstar’s vegan live cuisine is delicious & affordable. Get you some!

Welcomed with open arms into this small, neighborhood café serving amazing raw food. I only had raw food once before(in LA, at Juliano’s Raw), but went to another place since Rawstar(Quintessence) – and liked Rawstar best. The food was more compelling, and the staff made me feel like family. They’re moving to a new location soon, and I can’t wait to go back. Thanks, Nikki and Robert!

This place is great! Nothing has been disappointing yet, with great flavors and well-matched ingredients. Definitely love the stuffed portobello, the plantains, and everything else I’ve tried. Have yet to get there early enough for a pizza… They do run the place short-handed, so don’t go there to eat in if you’re in a hurry. I’ve seen plenty of people call ahead for pick up so give that a go. Beautiful presentation and they don’t rely to much on nuts for that heavy, oily feeling after eating. YUM!

Since only 1 person works here at a time, the service can be slow, but it’s worth it for the amazing food. Dishes are fresh and very flavorful. They use really imaginative combinations, and I don’t know how they make certain dishes without«cooking.» It’s magic! We split the napa sandwich which had mango, cashew butter, and lots of other fresh veggies inside. The fruit parfait is simple but really flavorful. I wonder if they use organic produce because it seems so fresh. Their huge menu has appetizers like falafel and crackers with cashew cheese, entrees consist of pasta and burgers, they have soups, salads, green smoothies, weekend brunch, raw desserts… I can’t wait to try more! I loved that a couple on here said they went to Rawstar for Valentine’s Day! That is a great idea! It’s not super fancy, but the intimate atmosphere and lovely food are great for V-day. It is a little pricey but definitely worth it considering the quality and the freshness. Much better than the nearby curry joints with trays of food that have been sitting out for hours. The place is tiny! There are only a few tables. I think the woman who opened it offers cooking classes!
