Authentic Malaysian food, large clean restaurant. Friendly staff and can accommodate large parties. The Roti Canai(roti prata) Indian bread with chicken curry is a must try. Hainan Chicken rice and mixed satay were also nice, reminiscent of what I’ve eaten in Singapore. Worth a visit if you are anywhere near the Brooklyn Sunset Park Chinatown.

I alternate between Redang and Nyonya about 2 blocks down depending on my mood. If you’re looking for better Malaysian food, but don’t mind the waiters being rude as hell to you, go to Nyonya. If you’re just having a bad day and want someone to at least smile when they take your order, go here, but expect the blandest Hainanese chicken.

It’s never easy writing harsh reviews. However, they are necessary when the food and or service is not up to standard. If you have read any of my other reviews, you would know by now that food for me is serious business. A friend of mine who knew that I was keen to try Malaysian food decided to take me to this establishment. She rated it high on her list. By the end of the night, she was apologizing and felt embarrassed that she took me to Redang Island. Let’s start with the food: My friend did most of the ordering with my only input was to ask that my food be spicy. I warned the waitress not to serve us an «Americanized» Malaysian Food. My friend who is Malaysian also reaffirmed my request. We ordered Prawn Pree, Spicy Thai Chicken, a dish of Vegetables and Sting Ray in Lotus Leaf. The Prawn Pree was bland although we asked it to be spicy, it lost its warmth very quickly and was not tasty once it got cold. The noodles were nice and cooked well. The broth was not very tasty and was on the bland side. Spicy Thai Chicken was the worse dish of the night and I give it ZERO out of 5 stars. I don’t know how this dish could be advertised as «Spicy Thai Chicken.» It was more like«Bland Thai Chicken.» It was undercooked in my opinion. The vegetable dish was also requested to be spicy and it turned out to be a bland. However, it retained its heat very well and turned out to be good. The best dish was the Sting Ray in Lotus leaf. The fish was cooked to perfection and the sauce was decent. To close our meal, I tried their shaved ice which was okay – nothing that special. I will suggest that if you try it, get the lemon instead of Coconut milk. The squeezed lemon provided a nice sweet and sour contrast. Overall the service was okay. Our waiter was all smiles with us until I told her the food was not spiced up as requested. After that she was not smiling with me anymore. The guy who made the ice was super nice especially to my friend and is the reason why this review is a 2 and not a 1 star rating. Get it together folks!

Love this place. Has a great vibe. It’s nothing fancy. More rustic and laid back. The staff are attentive. But be patience because when this place is busy it may take a little time to get your order. It’s well worth it. The food is spot on. Deep rich flavors. You can do mild or go spicy . Just dig in a try it all. Every trip we have one or two favorites and try a least one if not two new dishes.

Very authentic Malaysian food. The best«Har Mee» in NYC. Better than Nonya across the street. Will definitely come back for more.

In Brooklyn’s other«Chinatown» or as I like to call it «The place where people come to die while waiting for parking», The ball n’chain really wanted her curry noodle soup so we checked Unilocal and bam — Redang Island, here we come. Décor is your typical wooden everything. Started off with the Roti(Indian pancake) that came with a curry dipping sauce. It”s the perfect starter to get your appetite wet. The curry has a nice flavor and kick to it so spicy fans will def love this. My beb’s curry mee was decent thou she did say that her main spot in flushing is a lot better. I took a sip of the broth and realize that it lacked body. Not a hardy soup and had somewhat a diluted taste. I ordered the Hainese chicken and for about 10 bucks, you get half portion. The chicken was decent thou It wasn’t as fresh as it could be. There was way too much soy sauce on the bottom of the plate which the chicken soaks up and masks the subtle flavor of what would be a ginger poached chicken. I’ve had better on Elizabeth st and the Manhattan location of Nyonya. Overall a good substitute If you’re in the area for Malaysian cuisine. Or you could skip this and walk over a few blocks to Nyonya.

Pretty good food. Small portions though, came on a Monday and the service was pretty okay. Good place to come for a quick dinner when you don’t want to cook

Needed some Malaysian food elsewhere, other than Nyonya for a change. Not much choices on 8th avenue, Rendang would be the closest. Besides looking for a different experience, we needed some new things to eat, no Hainese Chicken today, no String Beans with Shrimp Malaysian Style today, no Calamari today. We actually took a second to go through their menu to see what else Malaysian cuisine has to offer. The Pearl Noodles Clay Pot came to the table and the picture of having them a few times a week, as a kid, before grocery shopping with my mom around 8th ave rushes in. The memories just flew by my mind, the last time I had noodles in a clay pot was more than 15 years ago, can’t really find them these days. The thick pearl noodles just wouldnt stop slipping off my chopsticks, a spoon is needed for this. The broth was mild, besides pieces of pork, mushroom, and baby corn, a nice raw egg in the hot broth would’ve hit the spot. The Coconut Jumbo Prawns sounded promising so we went for it. The prawns was jumbo alright, but not big enough for $ 24.95– only 5 pieces? Fried till super crisy that the shells were edible, lots of rich«red goo»(don’t know what it’s called) in the heads so give it a good suck. Did not taste too much of the coconut, I think it was deep fried coconut shavings and salted duck eggs sprinkled all over? What ever those shavings are, it was perfect for rice. As for the Princess Tofu, silky egg tofu, fried, and tossed in a chicken mushroom sauce, the portion was a bit small, nor did it look fancy enough for a plate to be named Princess, none the less the dish was okay. Will I be coming back? Yes, to the clay pot noodles, and to try out my usual dishes from Nyonya and see how they compare.

I really enjoy going here, it is cheap and oh so delicious. It’s easy in my pocket and tasty in my mouth, can’t as for anything better that that. The roti canai(indian pancake) is delicious that comes with chicken and potato dipping sauce. I thought of just ordering a couple of that because it is so good. I also got the nasi lemak which comes with coconut rice, anchovy, pickle, curry chicken and hard boiled egg. I want to come back here already just talking about the food. Service was fast and friendly.

Very standard food. Usually, I’ll get the roti and the curry isn’t spicy so that works out perfectly for me. I also like the chicken and salted fish fried rice or noodle, full of flavor and a good ratio of rice/noodle to chicken and fish. Service is generally friendly and attentive, and the place feels cleaner than Nyona, so I like it better.

The Hainanese chicken was on point! The Spicy Thai chicken or what not is just a brown sauce over the Hainanese chicken, and it isn’t spicy. The sarang burong was a little disappointing though, I think it lacked flavor/texture? But I can’t put my finger on it. Get the coconut pudding! I don’t even like coconut, but it’s so good! You can of course eat coconut meat while eating the pudding or after you finish the pudding. It’s such a light and refreshing dessert after a meal.

Comparing this with Nyona since I’ve been told it’s better. I love their spicy thai chicken here, one of the usuals that I order at Malaysian. Theirs is much better than nyona because the chicken is not only fatter, but also perfectly steamed and served to you in a warmer temperature with way more of that extra delicious brown sauce they put on top. One of the other things that I usually LOVE to order is the sarang burong(shaped fried taro bowl w/veggies, chicken and shrimp). I usually don’t even like eating taro, but the fact when they fry it and mix it with other stir fried stuff makes it so different and delicious. Nyona had this dish quite better, their fried taro shape bowl has a lot more seasoning on it and deep fried to where it’s more soft than Redang’s. What I like about this place is that it has the same stuff nyona has but even a few more variety and different dishes nyona doesn’t. Like their twist on Indian pancake, roti telur, which is a pancake filled with eggs & onions with the dipping curry on the side still. BUT their curry for the Indian pancakes are really bland compared to nyona’s. I’ll be going here still to test out the rest of their menu!

This tile and florescent light Asian eatery in Sunset Park is pretty typical of most interiors. The main objective here is to eat not to admire the beige ceiling tiles are the framed art work on the walls. The diner crowd was at its peak on the night we went. The food here comes out quickly and so are the orders. We barely sat down and the waiter was ready with the notepad. We weren’t quite ready and ushered him away for another 2 minutes before he would be returning. We quickly decided in anticipation of his arrival. As on cue, he was ready with the notepad. We ordered the Dried Curry Squid, Kang Kung Belacan, with Fried Egg with Osyters. The Belacan in shrimp paste was still crisp and the curry squid was very good. The curry was flavorful but not overwhelming like some Indian curries and who doesn’t like Fried scrambled eggs with oysters? Of the Maylasian restaurant Redang Island is one of the on my list when I want authentic flavors with all the bustle of frenzied eating only one can see in Asia.

This place is good AND consistent. When you are craving Malaysian, Redang is a sure bet. I’ve had about 4 dinners in a row here that were super satisfying. Curry noodles, garlic chicken, Roti appetizer, yellow rice… all solid, tasty options. Friendly and courteous service too. Thumbs up.

This is a very decent place for Malaysian food! My favorite dish here is the Curry Mee with Young Tofu but I order it with rice noodles! I appreciate that they are accommodating because I am a big fan of rice noodles! The curry soup was excellent and flavorful! I love the tofu skin, regular tofu, eggplant stuffed with fish paste, hot green pepper stuffed with fish paste! Very enjoyable dish especially during the cold, snowy weather! The roti was okay. It is very crispy but I wish it had some parts where it is soft too. The roti is nothing special and almost the same as any other Malaysian restaurant. Where in the world is my favorite roti place?! I will still order it just because its a normal appetizer to order at a Malaysian spot. Curry with the roti is less flavorful… which can be explained because it was very watery and the color is very light compared to other Malaysian spots. I would like Redang Island to be more consistent in their curry. How can my Curry Mee soup be so flavorful but the Roti Curry lack so much flavor?

Their food is not as tasty as the Malaysian spot on 54th street. Their roti is not as crispy and thin. The curry is weaker and more watery. The other dishes are okay but isn’t as flavorful. The thing this place does have that trumps all dishes is the Princess Tofu! It is amazing. It’s crispy tofu with tofu that tastes like steamed egg. I come here just to get this dish even if the other dishes aren’t as good.

LOVEEE. I’ve been here a couple of times and their food tastes great. What I especially like is their coconut pudding. It’s $ 8 but worth it in everyway. After the first time I came here, I’ve started to make my own coconut pudding, but it just can’t compare. What I’m curious about is how they have the pudding inside the coconut.

My boyfriend and I came here for lunch today. I ordered Nesi Lemak. It’s not my first time having this dish so I know how it suppose to taste. When the dish arrived, I thought to myself. It doesn’t look that bad but the min I tasted, I can barely continue. It’s suppose to be coconut rice but they gave me plain white rice. There should be fried anchovies(suppose to be crispy) but I only saw 2 pcs and its soggy because it’s mixed with bunch of onion in a sauce. The curry chicken was okay. Overall this place have the worst Nesi Lemak. The waiter was inattentive and somewhat rude. When I was walking out, the waiter was mumbling about low tips. I paid exactly 15% so that’s avg. How is that low? Do they expect like 18% or 20% for the disgusting food and terrible service? Ps I won’t be eating here again. I don’t recommend to anyone.

Your typical run of the mill local Malaysian restaurant. Typically, the restaurant is not crowded and there are plenty of seats inside. It’s a great spot to drop-in and get a quick/cheap lunch or dinner. As mentioned, the menu doesn’t vary much from other Malaysian restaurants as they serve the usual appetizers(i.e. Roti Canai), rice dishes(i.e. Beef Rendeng, Hainanese Chicken, Spicy Thai Chicken, Young Chow Fried Rice, etc), noodles(i.e. Chow Funs, Rice Noodles, Noodle In Soup). Usually, I order the Roti Canai and a rice dish. As you can tell, I wrote this review, so I survived from their food. It’s nothing out of the ordinary and it’s on par with any other restaurant.

After a three day trip in Philadelphia of not eating Asian food, I had a deep craving for Asian food and that craving was successfully satisfied! Very comfortable and cozy environment with Chinese music playing in the background. The AC was on full blast which we were very happy about since it was an insanely hot day. Staff were friendly and I was very impressed at how quick the service was. Soy Milk with Grass Jelly — I love this drink! Whoever thought of combining soy milk with grass jelly is a genius idea! So refreshing and enjoyable to drink. My only complaint is that the grass jelly was so small. I prefer my grass jelly in chunks. Roti Canai — This is a MUST have whenever we have Malaysian food. There was something different about this particular Roti Canai that I had. It tasted differently but in a good way. So fluffy and airy. The curry chicken & potato dipping sauce had a nice kick to it. Haianese Chicken — My boyfriend always orders this dish when we’re eating Malaysian food. We got a half chicken with extra soy sauce. The Haianese Chicken was scrumptious! So moist and tender. Chicken Broth Rice — The rice cooked just right. Moist and tasted a lot like chicken broth. Sarang Burong — I love this dish! It’s a deep fried taro bowl filled with baby corn, shrimp, mushroom, snow peas, peanuts, button mushrooms, pepper, onions, and of course chicken. I really love the different texture and the taste of the food combined together. A little expensive, but very tasty! I was really happy with the great quality of food and service here. I definitely will return to Redang Island again. I am interested in trying their other dishes so I guess that gives me another reason to visit.
