we went here for snack and drinks. We ordered a pizza(prosciutto & cheese) and also had one beer and two wines. It was a great service. food was served pretty quickly. choice of music could have been better(they played a children tune) but I loved the decoration. Overall a pleasant visit

Absolutely amazing!!! The empanadas are cooked in the brick oven and so killer. The Gambit cocktail is smoky, sweet and citrusy. Max the bartender is the sweetest! Not to mention the décor is so sweet definitely suits the name.

Came to Brooklyn for the weekend flea and stumbled upon this place with interesting deco. There’s an event going on so a skating girl performing and pianist singing«Wonderful Xmas». Food was good and staff were pretty friendly. Food was also served quite fast. Overall a pretty happy and fun experience!

This is the worst place ever!!! Was seated at a communal table for just a party of 2, even though I asked to be seated at a 2 top, the latina hostess without the mostest said its reserved even though they were 30 min from closing. We sat for 12 minutes without somebody even coming to offer water. We walked out and will never ever be back.

The humita empanadas were amazing! One of the best I’ve ever had, their brick oven made all the difference in how the food turned out. Would definitely come back and recommend to a friend!

I don’t understand how this place has good reviews. Can people stop being fooled by décor? Sure this place looks cool and warehouse-y which is all the rage for bk but the service was a disaster and the empanadas were disgusting. First of all, they serve a quiche. That crap is not an empanada. The pulled pork which is «very popular» was overloaded with sugar and the quiche crust was soggy and terrible in texture. And the service was just awful. There weren’t many tables at 4 pm on Saturday but it took 15 minutes of waiting on a wine and a beer before we asked another server to help get our waitress(who was fooling around with friends). We even got our disgusting roast pork empanada quiche before the drinks. Then it took another 5 to 10 minutes for her to come over with beer and wine. In this time I watched the bartender make at least 4 complicated drinks that included crushing mint leaves. Our ditsy waitress obviously just forgot or wasn’t bothered to put our order in. Ugh. Please people, stop rating places based on décor. This place sucks.

Nice and cozy large party pit with soft couches, fireplace, Montana lodge meets Argentina. Wood fire ovens kicking out some tasty empanadas. Great bar with crafted cocktails and craft beers. Definitely stop by and see for yourself how nice the décor and atmosphere is.

Very bad service. We had such a rude server, but the food tasted okay, nothing special about it though.

It’s cliché, but I really am usually not one to write a review. I think people waste too much time writing about foods/restaurants/experiences rather than just enjoying the venue or experience for what it is. Sure– if a place does a kick ass job, they deserve some solid recognition. I’ve lived in New York for 6 years now and had my worst dining experience here at the Shelter. I understand people in Williamsburg run on a different clock and half of ‘em are in outer space, but people go out to eat for service. My group of 6 waited almost 35 minutes for our appetizer of one pie of pizza and roasted vegetables(vegetables never came). After that we waited an additional 30 – 35 minutes for our entrees. Another table next to us got seated 15 minutes after us, ate and paid the check and left before we even got our entrees. If I wanted to twiddle my thumbs all night I would’ve just done that in my apartment. Food was fine but the kicker was that b/c we were a group of 6, we were automatically charged a 20% tip. Joke.

To be honest, I’m not sure why this restaurant only has three stars — I had a fine dining experience here and would definitely come back. It has a beautiful interior that is divided into 2 floors — the downstairs is primarily for food, and the second level has couches where you can sit and enjoy drinks from the bar. We stumbled here after being underwhelmed by smorgasburg,(which is just 2 blocks away) and ordered two of their burgers at brunch time on a Saturday afternoon. We weren’t expecting much, but this was a surprisingly good and juicy burger. The fries were also great, and they were happy to give us a side of chipotle mayo sauce, which is also what they put on the burger I believe. Our server was also really nice, and we had a pleasant time. Definitely drop by and try the burger if you happen to be in the area.

I went to Shelter on a Friday night for dinner around 8. The place was packed so I’m glad we had reservations! We ordered drinks and the burrata to start, which took quite a while to come out. Between the four of us, we got the brussels sprout pizza, a margherita pizza, the short ribs, and the chicken entrée. All of it was just ok, which was disappointing given how much we loved the atmosphere. The roaring fire, busy bar, the antler chandelier-all created such a warm and cozy vibe but the food was very average. I’d consider coming back for drinks by the fire, but probably won’t be ordering any food!

I pretty much come here for the beautiful fireplace, super comfortable couches, and the rustic feel the environment brings. I’m such a sucker for those. I’ve tried half of the pizzas on the menu and although the portions are a tad on the smaller side for the price, they’re pretty great. The truffle mac and cheese is to die for. Service can be a bit more friendly though, and quite often, the waitresses take way too long with drinks.

Used to be my favorite place. Was a patron when the fish shack used to have late night parties in there. Kept the place open when a Saturday night had 2 people in there when it was new. Now they think they are hot shit and have horrible service. Tell your bartender to quit kissing all his friend’s asses and to do his job. Thanks for not making my drink order 25 minutes later just like you did in my previous visit in two weeks. Tell the manager asking a customer to step outside to fight is just an idiotic move. Again do your job! It’s a shame, this place was great. Hope they recognize warm weather is just around the corner and their popularity will dwindle with no need for a fire place or ski lodge atmosphere. Nor does their food stand out as the best. Empanadas are not that good and their pizza is just pizza there. Way to not use your awesome dueling ovens. Congrats on shooting yourselves in the foot team shelter.

I am not sure if it was because it was a Saturday night, but this place has horrible customer service with the bar and table service. HORRIBLE. I went with a big group of people to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Keep in mind, we called in advance and planned in advance for a group to come. It took us almost 4 hours to get a table for our group, and the bartenders would ignore us perodically. We did not want much, and it would take 45 mins to just order drinks or food. Things happen and we understand, but this happened like 5 times with different people in our group. On top of this, the bartender Franchesco kept going off anytime we would try to get his attention, threatening to kick us out. I know people say the empanadas, drinks and ambiance are great here, but to commute all the way to Brooklyn for this awful service on someone’s birthday is unacceptable. Keep this in mind when you go!

Shelter’s in North Williamsburg, close to the water. It’s a gorgeous, large space– really good for big parties. It’s decorated like a cabin in the woods, with fireplaces, all wood furniture. Our waitress was very sweet. The service is a little slow, but it was a Friday night. I ordered the Alice In Wonderland cocktail, which is a tasty mescal cocktail that tastes like bacon. We had the macaroni & cheese to start, which is made with penne pasta and white cheese. It was good. The real winner are the pizzas. It’s brick oven baked and very delicious! I loved the crust and the sauce/cheese ratio was perfect. I definitely recommend coming here for the pizzas, and will be back to try the empanadas.

A chunk of firewood popped and nearly missed my friend’s shoulder. We asked to move to a spot farther away from the fire and didn’t realize how big of an ordeal it would be. We explained what happened to a number of people(4 – 6). After repeated visits, attitude and confusion from the staff(meanwhile our friend standing away from the table, traumatized by what could have been a very serious injury, and that very chunk of wood, laying near us was still bright red from the fire) we finally got moved. The waitress wrote us off with saying”…it happens.” We were treated like problem guests from something that was clearly the restaurant’s ignorance. When we asked one of the staff to talk to the manager about this safety issue they simply replied, «I know, but I’m not going to talk to him about it.» Something which also implies to me that the work environment might not be so forgiving. We tried to be understanding at first and asked if maybe they had a grate or some sort of protective sheet to put around the fire and we would stay put. We didn’t know how inexperienced and ill-equipped with having a fireplace the restaurant would be. So no grate. I work in the service industry and this is no way to treat someone who may have been seriously hurt by your restaurant environment. The staff was rude and although apologetic, it took some talking to. We didn’t feel comfortable afterwards. I’m not saying this will happen to you, but you may be treading on thin ice if you approach the staff with any issues.

Had such high hopes for this place. I really wish I could say that I had a good dining experience, but it was mediocre at best. The one thing I could say Shelter Pizza did have going was the décor. The place is excellent for large groups, as they have different types of seating options conducive to drinking, eating, and good conversation. The place has a «lodge-y» feel. It has a fireplace, is dimly lit, and has many hunting accents along the walls. All of these things mean nothing, however, if your service is bad. I went in with a group of four on a Thursday afternoon. The place was completely empty inside with the exception of one other table. We were seated right away, but had to wait over an hour to finally receive our food. The waitress checked on us only once more throughout our stay, and it was to bring us the check. Did I mention the place was practically empty??? I ordered the truffle Mac and cheese(was good but tasted nothing like truffles) and a cheese pizza which was a bit bland.

Shelter pizza promises: — Cool ambiance, fit for groups — Range of pizzas, fit for the picky — Couch seating, fit for the casual — Full bar, fit for the drinking — Poor service, fit for low maintenance — Mean hostess, fit for a different job Xoxo.

I came here with my boyfriend on Saturday for brunch. We happened to pass by, and the interior looked cool, so we decided on this restaurant. We were immediately sat, but the service was VERY slow and it was not crowded. We sat for about 30 – 35 minutes before a waitress came over. We were both very underwhelmed with our food. I wouldn’t come back. RESTAURANTOVERVIEW: –Very big and spacious –American/barn/rustic vibe — decorated very cool –Casual/hipster FOOD: –Ham & Cheese Empanada: This was good — much doughier than other empanadas I’ve had. It’s a shame they only give you one though for $ 6. –Steak and Eggs: My boyfriend ordered this. The meat was VERY undercooked for his liking(he ordered medium cooked and got something that looked very very rare). The bacon was delish(they ask you how you like your bacon, so he said crispy)! Everything else on the plate was very mediocre. –Burger: I ordered a medium rare burger. It was very big, so I only had about half. It was alright. I’ve had MUCH better burgers. I wouldn’t get this. I asked if I could have fries instead of the potatoes they serve, and the waitress said they have their own version of fries. They were bad. They were just like potato chip straws. Very hard to eat, and not good. SERVICE: –SO slow. We got seated, waited for maybe 20 mins. We flagged down a guy that was not a waiter, but he didn’t know the menu, so wan’t able to answer any questions. Then a waitress was finally sent over to us about 15 mins later. She didn’t know the answer to a question about what dressing is used, so had to check on that. We waited about 10 more mins and finally placed our order. It took about 35 mins to get the food. We were STARVED at this point, and the food was just mediocre. I would ultimately never come back here.
