Flying Penguin is the only local ice producer in Bryan /College Station and has been for over 30 years. Penguin is also the only local source of food grade ice which is reverse osmosis and ultraviolet treated. I use over 100 pounds of ice per month in the home brewing process(making beer) from wort chilling to a direct water substitute(a 10 pound bag is 1.25 gallons, roughly). All too often people fail to question or even think about what is in ice. It’s food according to the Brazos(and all other) Health Departments. So if you are going to drink it, should you not be aware of what it is? While you can find this ice around town(look for the logo) you can also pick it up(cash only) at their location on Dellwood right behind KAGS. Cash only, great service /they will load as much as you need in your vehicle. Prices are fair, $ 1.50 for 10 pounds or $ 3 for 20 pounds. This beats HEB at a whopping $ 2.99 for 10 pounds(typical rip off from that monopoly). The only other ice in town that was cheaper WAS at Speedy Stop(now 7 – 11) on Harvey Road and Texas Ave S. When 7 – 11 took over they doubled the price from .99 for 10 pounds to $ 1.99 per 10 pounds. That was just last month. So the best quality, only local and only food grade ice from the original and only company that purifies the water is once again the lowest in cost. They also deliver like to tailgates. If you stop by it’s the building to the left of the two. Just don’t park in Bob’s space; Cool place! ;)
