Taqueria La Jefa

Well, the third time was a charm, finally being able to eat here. Went by Saturday only to learn it closed at 2 pm. (Should have made note of the hours in my own photos, duh!). Went by again Sunday only to learn it was closed ALL day Sunday. So my wife and I hit it for lunch just before noon, as the 1^st leg of a three taqueria trek.
So they have a steam table and you point at what you want and they will tell you what it is. We went with (4) of the perhaps 8 or so selections.
We had the Bistek (beef stew), Beef Fajitas, Shredded Chicken and Chicharron (Pork fat /​skin in gravy). While we were not asked if we wanted flour or corn tortillas we were asked if we wanted rice and beans. That struck me as being odd but the first reviewer did state that the tacos came with rice and no cilantro, so I declined both rice and beans and instead just onions and cilantro only (in Spanish) and was handed a paper check to go pay at the Easy Shop 3 cash register. Clerk run me up and added tax and we sat at the only table and waited. The (4) tacos came to $ 8.36.
Wasn’t 3 – 4 minutes later and we were handed a paper bag and told thank you (a smile of any sort by either of the ladies would have gone a long way…) So we unwrapped them, snapped photos of all for your pleasure, and chowed down.
As it turns out they all came on very fresh fluffy flour tortillas that were probably made there and they had been flat grilled to get some char here and there. Quite nice in fact.
The clear winners were;
1) Shredded chicken with a huge portion of quite moist and finely shredded chicken that obviously took some time and care to prepared. My wife’s favorite.
2) Beef fajita that was nice and tender steak thick cut with onions and bell peppers in a stew. This was the only taco of the (4) that came with onions and cilantro as I had asked for. This was my favorite and I will order it again.
Runners up;
3) Chicharron — There are several ways of doing pork skins and they have obviously opted for the soggy stew like version. I think this might be way, way better when they first add the skins to the stew base.
4) Bistek — A tad too chewy and gristly to my liking. The breading was all but lost in the once again «stew» base. Everything here exact the chicken was a tad too greasy, fatty and had too much liquid in the pans. And with the Bistek it should have been hammer down more. I wouldn’t try it again.
Rating this is tuff because I’m trying to be as fair as possible. The true rating in my opinion is 2 stars as «I’ve had better is the truth». I’ve eaten every taco in Bryan and College Station that I am aware of, except for –1– single place. The lack of any personality or smile displayed by anyone there underscores the two stars; The fact that the order wasn’t correct and the onions and cilantro were left off 3 of the 4 items further underscores it and finally not even being asked if it was for here or to go (since the table was open) and being handed a paper bag to go kinda describes the experience to a tee.
There one thing I was impressed by and it was the tiny little portions of hot sauce. It was orange /​greenish and the way the heat built up I’m pretty sure it had habanero in it.
They do serve breakfast tacos from 5:30 am until 11 am, which we have not tried and I will return to try them. As there’s not much food to be found way out here and the fact that it might be a great place for breakfast to go, I’ll leave this at 3 stars for now to give the benefit of the doubt, until I get a chance to try breakfast and update this review.
