Our solar window screens were old and tired so it was time to replace them. I didn’t realize how much there was to know about screens until I started looking into replacing ours. It boils down to this: Functionally, there are 2 types of window screens; solar or insect screens. Solar, as the name suggests, provides protection from the sun’s light/heat which reduces cooling costs, and fading to carpets, furniture, etc… they also provide a degree of daytime privacy. They come in varying degrees of solar protection so they differ in percentage of solar blockage and color. Insect screens, as one would imagine, are intended to keep bugs out if you open your windows which we love to do in the spring and fall! Additionally there are aesthetic considerations. Solar screens cover the whole window, creating uniformity in the look of your home whereas insect screens cover only the portion of the window that opens. Solar screens and frames come in various colors which you can coordinate to best complement your existing home accents. And the percentage of solar blockage greatly impacts how dark the screens are. If your goal is to actually get more natural light into your home, obviously no screens or bug screens are better for this purpose. Having the benefit of shade trees, heat reduction was less of a priority for us but I knew I wanted solar screens because of their exterior cosmetic appeal and security benefits. But I also had some concerns. Many solar screens I’d seen around town were so dark that it created huge black«holes» in the look of the home making it look like the windows were not yet installed. I knew I didn’t want that! Before calling, I perused Rick’s website which was exceptional in terms of complete and straightforward screen information in an organized and concise way. I called and off the bat, Rick was accommodating and scheduled to come out as soon as I was available. I had my list of questions ready and he came in and was really easy going and friendly. He patiently listened and provided great recommendations and I’m so glad he did! We decided to go with the 65% solar screen in charcoal gray but the coolest part is the grid work he put on our screens. If you haven’t seen grid work before, it’s definitely worth taking a peek at his website or Facebook page to see his pics. Grid work is applied right onto the outside of the screen which recreates the look of French window panes so it looks like you don’t even have screens at all! He is the only screen company I researched who mentioned this option and it’s shockingly affordable. I can’t believe everyone doesn’t do grid work because it looks so much better than plain screens in my opinion! It’s funny to think you could get excited about window screens but done well, they really do provide a clean and polished look. We feel lucky to have found Rick; he does all the work himself, uses superior materials and provides very high quality workmanship. He listens and makes well-informed suggestions based on your preferences. He’s trustworthy and easy to work with. His pricing is excellent, far better than I would have expected given the high level of quality, and he works quickly.

Capitols Screens have been creating my wood screens for several years now. I really like Rick a lot and he is very knowledgeable about working on old houses. My house was built in 1908 and each window is a different size. He also lets me do just a few at a time if need be or all at once which helps if you are on a budget. He custom fits them and does beautiful work. A true craftsman! Living in an older home makes it difficult to find businesses who will do such detailed work and once I do find them I keep them. I would highly recommend using his company.

This recommendation is a long time coming. In the past and for many years we used Capitol Screen to replace a screen or two at our house in Anderson Mill. Never had a problem. Last year we moved to Round Rock to a house that faced west and really heated up in the afternoon sun. All of the rooms in the front, upstairs and downstairs, were hot in the summertime. We spoke with several contractors about this issue but were really impressed by Rick with Capitol Screens. My wife was especially concerned how solar screens could diminish the appearance of our house. Rick was thorough, honest and showed up on time, not only for the consultation, but for the installation as well. He did an awesome job and the screens greatly enhanced the appearance of our house. We are very happy with his service and product and recommend him highly.

GREAT job! We had Capitol Screen Co. replace all of our window screens and make us a screen door for the sliding patio door. They did an excellent job — the screens look/work great. They did the work with a quick turnover time and speedy installation. And the prices were extremely reasonable. I’ve made my own screens before, so I know how much it costs.
