LOVEERBERT&GERBERT’S! From Duluth, MN, grew up with this awesomeness being available after bar hours, THANKYOUFORCOMINGTOBUFFALO!!! Very little meat!!! Try the Flash!, it’s loaded with meat! Also not sure if this location does this but $ 1 day old bread + bowl of soup = delicious cheap meal! Seriously, you gotta give this place a decent chance!

I desperately wanted to like this place. I love sandwiches and cute things so it seemed like a no-brainer. There is VERY little meat on their sandwiches and nothing tastes… like anything. From the bread to the mustard, it’s exceptional in its blandness. I LOOKS like a place that would have fresh, farm to table ingredients but you get home and there you are with a slice of deli meat and some fixins that you could have purchased at the corner store. The first time I went, I didn’t really understand the offerings so I asked for a typical turkey sandwich with some bacon and general fixins. I guess if I’d taken the time to read the menu board I could have just picked something similar but I didn’t and I got a little sass. I don’t think black olives are out of the ordinary but it kinda seemed that way from the response. The second time I went, the service was MUCH better. But the food was just the same. Both times I got a version of a turkey sandwich and soup, both of which left me wanting. Great location and idea but poor execution.

Owner was there and was very welcoming. Had the vegetarian avocado sandwich and the tuna sandwich(shared) on wheat bread. Very delicious. I love how they scoop the bread out so there is more room for tasty treats!

Becoming a good fast go-to. Great sandwiches, fresh ingredients and really friendly staff. Haven’t tried it yet but my partner loves their soup too.

Very little meat. Mayonnaise on everything. I think helmans secretly owns it. Bread I’d like something from a gas station. Flavorless and disappointing. It’s like a really bad Jimmy John’s knockoff. Avoid it I don’t understand how they are still in business

For the price, considering the Elmwood area, everything is great. If it were more expensive in say, South Buffalo or Cheektowaga, it would be awful. The cold cuts aren’t the best quality, but their tuna salad is awesome. The options are alright, nothing special, but the bread is always fresh and tasty. Is E&G’s better than Subway, not really. But then, Subway doesn’t deliver… and I am always surprised at how friendly the delivery person is so that’s definitely a plus. If you’re looking for a sandwich that’s going to have the Mmmmmm-Wow factor when you bite into it, you won’t find it at E&G’s. If you’re hungover, don’t want to leave your house and want your food in 30 minutes, you’ve struck gold.

Had their sandwiches while my son was in Childrens hospital. They deliver to the hospital which is great(I walked their though as it is a block away). Franchise owner and his wife waited on us and we’re very friendly. Subs are very fresh tasting, like a Jimmy Johns or Potbelly but better in my opinion. Solid chain sub stop.

So I was driving around with my girlfriend looking for a Loyds truck to no avail. Stop in on this place by accident on one of those ‘lets try the next place we see’ situations. the guy behind the register was extremely nice and seemed competent. The two girls making the sandwiches had such a demeanor of contempt on their faces it was awkward just being in their presence. «Are we bothering you? Should we come back another time?» My girl noticed them making her sandwich with the wrong bread and I encouraged her to let them know. Reasonable in my opinion. I couldn’t believe that these two girls faces could actually get more sour. Once we get home I realize they put tomatoes on mine and forgot my girlfriends bacon in which she was charged extra for. Not a big deal, but how many mistakes can one make on a such a simple order? Aside from the miserable service, the food plain sucked. It was worse than Quiznos. How can such a bad sandwich shop exist in chi chi Elmwood Village? Probably not for long I imagine. The worst part of the whole experience was the shame I felt for not being able to provide the girl I love with a decent lunch in a city with endless options. To end on a positive note, we got Loyds for lunch the next day and it was perfect! :)

Trying to figure where to go for a lunch date, my husband wanted a sandwich. We had seen this place before and thought it looked good. The menu includes about 15 – 20 sandwiches ranging in price from $ 4.50 to about $ 7.00. They also had 4 or 5 fresh soups. My husband got the Pompeii, it’s a summer sandwich special. I got the Erupter. Both sandwiches were made with grilled chicken breast pieces as a base. We made them meals with chips and drinks. It was $ 20 for us, which we thought was reasonable. The sandwiches were huge, fresh, and downright delightful. We ate on the patio and everyone walking by seemed envious! Everything tasted so fresh. The staff was also probably the friendliest I have encountered in a long time. We will definitely be returning!

Placed an order for delivery an it arrived fresh and on time. Great staff with positive attitudes and excellent customer service. Most polite delivery driver I’ve meet. Left a hefty tip for him(:

Ate here for the first time today. It was fine — nothing special. The sub had a ton of lettuce, not too much of anything else. Cookies are pre-packaged, not fresh baked — not cool. Few minor gripes — my to go order of soup did not contain a spoon, particularly ordered sliced pickle on the sandwich, got a pickle on the side. Probably wouldn’t go back, but it wasn’t horrible.

Not overly terrible but just good enough to eat. Sub roll was blah. Flavor was blah. Not enough meat or cheese. The best part of my meal was the soup. Creamy chicken with wild rice. And the soup probably came from a mix. I prefer local places. NY Metro deli is 3 store fronts down. Casa Di Pizza is across the street. Go to one of those places instead.

With family on their way to come stay with us, I didn’t want to dirty our kitchen. I also didn’t want to leave the warmth of my apartment on this cold December night. So, I did what I’ve been meaning to do for months and ordered delivery from Erbert & Gerbert’s. I ordered a Spartan sub on wheat while my husband got the Erupter on white. I debated whether or not to order soup but ultimately decided against it when I got a roundabout answer regarding whether soups were made in house on the phone. We were shocked at how quickly our food arrived and pleased with the $ 15 bill. With good prices and prompt service, I was almost sold! Then we opened our bag… Our sandwiches were not bad, but they weren’t great either. More than anything, I think we were surprised by the small size of the sandwiches after years of being spoiled by enormous Wegmans subs. I ate my entire meal within one sitting which is pretty unusual for me. While the portions were small, the flavors were decent. I enjoyed the spicy mustard on my Spartan and my husband liked the zesty Buffalo-inspired flavors on his Erupter. However, he was surprised that his sandwich wasn’t hot. I think he was hoping for something closer to a chicken finger sub. Although nothing was technically wrong with either sandwich, the ingredients did not seem very fresh– just your typical shredded lettuce and thinly sliced tomato. Overall, Erbert & Gerbert’s served its purpose. We were hungry and lazy and looking for a quick fix. Even though we aren’t itching to try other menu items, I wouldn’t say that I’d never order from here again. Next time I will just probably order soup in addition to a sandwich to ensure ultimate fullness!

Do yourself a favor and go to Joe’s deli instead. I’ll give you a run down on the food, two pieces of bread and some cold cuts. Nothing special you can make the exact same thing at your house for free.

Pretty tasty… I got the Quatro sandwich on wheat… The sandwich ingredients were very crispy and fresh… The wasabi cranberry sauce was tasty… I am not a big chicken fan but I thought the chicken here was quite edible… This might be the place I go to for chicken… Also, the roll was very fresh and tasty too… Pretty impressive considering I got my meal at about midnight… They have quite a few variations of interesting sandwiches… They are also open later… Friendly staff as well… I’ll definitely be returning… I did not realize this but they are a chain from the mid-west…Wisconsin, etc…

If I could give 0 stars I would. Friends of mine had tried this place out and said it wasn’t bad so I tried it yesterday. The shop is very small and looks like a glorified Subway. The one person working didn’t seem too thrilled to help or be there what-so-ever. I ordered a Narmer, basically a Turkey and Avocado stub. My boyfriend ordered a Comet Candy. He got a bowl of Clam Chowder and I got a beverage and a bag of chips. Our grand total for the order… $ 22. Really? $ 22 for one of the worst subs I have ever consumed. Literally ONE slive of turket, an inch of avocado sauce(?), and one slice of cheese with a MOUNTAIN of lettuce and an entire cup of mayo. It was absolutely terribly. There are SO many other sandwich shops in the area far superior in all aspects… whether it’s price or quality of ingredients. I will never be back here. Ugh.

The problem with Erbert and Gerbert’s isn’t that it’s bad per se. Rather, this restaurant is wholly redundant and inferior to its competition in concept, in ingredients, and in value. ATMOSPHERE: This E&G location is nigh microscopic. And as I think of it now, it’s a testament to the former Bistro Europa staff that they were able to do so much in such a tiny space. In the newly renovated space, a large counter(think Subway) now dominates the rear of the store with but a tiny entryway comfortable enough for but one average-sized person in which for people to queue up to order. With two registers, walking around one person to place an order makes me feel like I’ve boarded a rush hour train in Tokyo(albeit hopefully without those crazy subway molesters). With such a small space to queue, a queue of even one or two people will line up straight through the middle of the floor, exacerbating an already uncomfortable dine-in situation. See, all the seating in E&G has been arranged such that individuals sit on stools and directly face a hard surface. Even cafes in New York City, San Francisco, and Tokyo will try to cram a few tables in so that conversations can amenably here. Takeout is a must. FOOD: But why would you bother eating here? Sandwiches here are pedestrian and terribly uncreative. A turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and mayo makes the menu, as do a peanut butter and jelly, a turkey and ham(somehow on the specialty listing), and a ham and roast beef(somehow also on the«specialty» listing). Sweet chili chicken salad, cranberry wasabi chicken, and buffalo chicken and bleu cheese all might sound a bit more adventurous… should we hop in a DeLorean, scooch up to 88 miles an hour, and find ourselves back in 1992. Now, all might be forgiven were E&G offering artisan ingredients, premium meats, locally sourced breads, and so forth. But they aren’t. The ingredients appear comparable to SteakOut and Subway and certainly inferior to those of Panera. Worse, the ingredients are stored chilled such that a sandwich can emerge with a disconcerting temperature imbalance of too-cold lettuce and tomato on room temperature bread with hot meats. VALUE: All might be forgiven again if we were talking about a value proposition à la Tim Horton’s or Century Grill(irrefutably inferior food at bargain prices). But we’re not. Sandwiches run $ 4.00 and change for something as simple as turkey, lettuce, tomato, and mayo or up to $ 6.00 and change for, i.e., their take on a buffalo chicken sub all at sizes markedly smaller than a Subway footlong or a Jim’s SteakOut full. The sandwiches arrive sans any courtesy drink(even water) or side, meaning that a total lunch including water($ 1.75 for a Dasani) and a side($ 1.25 or more per) can easily approach the cost of lunch at Joe’s Deli or Globe, dwarfs the cost of lunch at Sazon Criollo, the West Side Bazaar, Phở Dollar, or other more interesting options. ENFIN: I’m not anti-chain by any means. When a chain puts out a good product(i.e. NYC’s Pret a Manger, Japan’s Mr. Donut, Einstein Brothers, etc.), I’ll happily visit and may even evangelize.(Don’t get me started on the virtues of downtown Charlotte’s Panera as a breakfast option relative to anything else there. What a mediocre city. Geeze.) But this Erbert and Gerbert’s just doesn’t make any sense to me. Nothing is premium. Nothing is adventurous. Nothing is even a decent value. Short a complete overhaul, it boggles my mind that anyone would EVER visit this place twice. 1 star for atmosphere 2 stars for food 1 star for value 1 star overall

I received a flyer for Erbert & Gerbert’s in my mail recently and thought what everyone in Elmwood Village thinks when they get these«Super. Another sub shop. We don’t have enough of those…» There are just so many and everyone already has their favorite. Last night I got hungry and decided to give them a shot. Yes I have my favorites and yes it’s a chain, but I decided to be a good neighbor and give them a shot. I called for delivery and two things surprised me. My sub would be here in 10 minutes and it would only be 7ish dollars. That’s a big promise to deliver on! True to their word my sub showed up super quick and with a decent tip I was feeling good about my purchase. As I carried it to the table I noticed the size was not substantial. I’d almost classify it as what a sub should be. There weren’t going to be any leftovers, but why should buying a sub be grocery shopping for lunch tomorrow? I’d ordered the Tullius which is billed as a DOUBLE roast beef, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo. Nothing crazy here. So why the 3 stars Brian? Everything was fresh. The taste was good, but no different from any chain sub restaurant. My big problem? My DOUBLE roast beef was less than I’d expect on a normal sandwich. I wasn’t hoping for beef falling out the sides in a carnivore’s delight of a cow’s bad day, but I was definitely expecting more. I’ll try them again, but next time I’m going for DOUBLEDOUBLE roast beef!

I figure the best way to get over the old Bistro Europa up and moving is to see the new sandwich store that replaced its spot on Elmwood. The first thing I thought walking into Erbert & Gerbert’s is, how did Bistro Europa ever fit all those tables in here?!? That is one small space. My second thought was, this is a really clean, fresh looking little sandwich place. Everything is redone and freshly painted in a nice contemporary style. This little restaurant really adds to that block of Elmwood. The servers are incredibly friendly and seem to have a good time working there. The menu is pretty standard, with sandwiches and soups, including one vegetarian option for a sandwich. And the prices are pretty much what you’d pay at other, similar kinds of places. You can easily eat here for under $ 10. I ordered the Titan on whole wheat, which is a turkey sandwich with some kind of spiced mayo and sun dried tomatoes, and I picked up a bag of chips along with it. My lunch was completely satisfying. One of the things Erbert & Gerbert does is scoop out some of the bread — which, by the way, was very fresh — from the inside of the sandwich roll so that the meat and veggies aren’t always on the verge of sliding out. Neat idea! You get the scoped out bread on the side along with the rest of your order, ostensibly for soaking up soup or just plan enjoyment. I think that’s a bit much. But hey. If it floats your boat, why not? Some people might complain that Erbert & Gerbert is just another chain opening on Elmwood(like Spot Coffee). In my opinion, this is exactly the kind of place that will do very well in the area. The place is small and really best suited for take-out or a very quick bite. The sandwiches are tasty. The ingredients are fresh. The place is warm and friendly. Yes, Joe’s Deli is better. But if you’re in a rush or just want to pick up something for home, check it out.

I showed up for lunch after driving by a few times. I have never eaten at E&G, and have heard nothing about them before. Anyone that ate at Bistro Europa knows that 484 Elmwood is small, but E&G does a good job at utilizing the space they have. There is ample seating inside and outside, and the facilities were clean. I had the Spartan; a decent chicken and bacon sandwich. I ordered the combo meal, which got me a drink and a soup of my choice(I am a sucker for New England Clam chowder). The portion size and quality were adequate: not the best bacon or meat that I’ve had, but better than most fast food establishments. The clam chowder was better than most, with a good flavor and ample large chucks of clam. The standard white bread roll was pretty fresh. At E&G they hollow out the mushy center of the roll like a canoe before they fill the roll, and set the mushy bread on top of your sandwich when they wrap it up. I am unsure of why they do this. The cost of the combo meal was above $ 10, which puts it into the pricey category. At Wegman’s & Guercio’s the same combo meal can be purchased for a few dollars less, and the quality of the ingredients at these places are noticeably better. Joe’s Deli and Chris’ NY Deli are around the same price, but have much better sandwiches and a more diverse menu. I’m not sure if this is the right location for G&E: there are a number of sub-shops and deli’s with a 2 mile radius that do it better, some for less money. Overall E&G’s is on par with a Jimmie John’s: better than Subway, but worse than the many local alternatives we have in Buffalo. But if you’re at the bar on that block and don’t want to venture to Jim’s or Casa, then it’s worth a try. Otherwise I would stroll down Grant to get a sandwich on a Le Metro roll and a pop for $ 5 at Guercio’s.
