The jerk and curry chicken is to die for. Every time the meat falls off the bone. Every time I order the service is quick and prompt. The curry goat is tender and savory. The beef patties are very delicious. This is by far THEBEST jamican eatery

I am so happy to have found this place. I have been homesick lately as I attend school in Buffalo. My family is Jamaican so I was looking for the closets thing to authentic Jamaican cuisine possible. I’ve eaten at other Jamaican restaurants in the area and was not impressed. But this place is wonderful. For one, the prices are decent compared to other places I’ve been. I’m originally from NYC where west-Indian food is highly accessible and cheap. This place is pretty close to the price I’d usually pay for the portion they provide. The staff is also very courteous and helpful. I was in and out with 5 – 7 minutes. I ordered a small curry chicken and beef patty. The food was tasty but very mild in spices. It could use a little more seasoning or spice but I’m guessing they tone it down for the general population. The beef patty was good too, better than I had expected. My favorite part of the meal though is the Kalypso slaw. I really enjoyed the freshness of it and it adds texture and variety to the overall meal. Overall I’ll be back as I’ve found a piece of home here…

I got the brown stew fish and holy cow was it great! Huge portions for a reasonable price. Great location for near by college kids, one order can feed you for at least 2 days.

I ordered the small curry, which came w/rice & slaw, and it was cool. I walked in & ordered and w/in 8mins or maybe lesser it was ready. For a small the portions were huge(trust, I’m not complaining lol). It smelled amazing but the taste wasn’t very flavorful. It was ok, just ok. Maybe if it was spicy I would prefer it alot better.

I come here when I want flavor and a large quantity of food. GREAT for take out– The service is kind, quick, and the food is cheap, filling. I ordered coco bread, and the jerk chicken and oxtail combo. –No reason for me ordering a roll other than to stuff it in my face-but I assume this is for vegetarian patties/other patties. The combo comes with plantain, rice and coleslaw. The sauce is sweet, spicy, with a lot of warmth to it. I’m sure I tasted clove in the rice. The oxtail is inherently fatty, but here, it’s also cooked through. Watch out for little bones in the chicken! Also, make sure you enjoy the fruity(essentially sugar water) bottled beverages with your meal. So good.

One word… SCRUMDIDDLYUMPTIOUS!!! I have NEVER gotten something out of here that I disliked. The food is flavorful and the portions are amazing. This place is award worthy. I would be so disappointed if Kalypso was to cease to exist. If you decide to eat here, you will not be disappointed. This restaurant is definitely one of Buffalo’s best!

We’re going to preface this by saying that Kalypso is the bee’s knees. We are not Caribbean food connoisseurs yet but that will be definitely be changing. We experienced some of the best flavored foods of our life here and can’t wait to come back for seconds. Setting: Kalypso is a no-frills restaurant that appears to focus more on take-out than dine-in. Not a problem for us but I wouldn’t plan on hosting your next birthday party here. We knew we were in for a treat the minute we walked in the front door and got hit in the face with the aroma bellowing from the kitchen. The interior wasn’t grandiose, we made ourselves comfortable under a picture of Bob and a faux palm tree. Menu: The menu was solid. It featured Caribbean appetizers, salads, and entrees including jerk chicken/pork, oxtail, goat, fish stew, and coconut milk based shrimp curry. It was a tough decision so we followed the recommendations and ordered both a small jerk pork entrée and a small coconut shrimp curry entrée. Both entrees came with a fried plantain, Kalypso coleslaw, rice with beans, and the protein source. Food: The food arrived in two styrofoam containers that were so full they were bursting at the seams with their contents. The servers plastic tray was nearly bowing from the weight of our two«small» meals. Very nice. The unique fragrances from each meal hit us in the face a second time when we opened the styrofoam boxes to reveal the contents. We got warmed up with the coleslaw and moved on to a perfectly fried plantain before gorging ourselves on the main part of the meal. The jerk pork was as tender as it was succulent. It also managed to stay interesting without ever getting too rich. It was seasoned well and had a pretty good kick. The shrimp curry was just as good, attributing most of it’s claim-to-fame to the delicious coconut based sauce and mouthwatering shrimp. Overall: Kalypso is incredibly impressive. The food is great and the restaurant is unpretentious. It’s exactly what we look for when going out. They would get a perfect score if they offered non-disposable tableware for dine-in experiences. Overall: A–

I’ve been coming here for about 2 years and it has never let me down once. Just trying different culture food overall is something adventurous to do. There are a lot of different food choices for you to choose from but I usually get the jerk chicken. The flavor of it is very unique and it always satisfy my stomach. The curry chicken & pepper steak is also good but I still prefer the jerk chicken more. I have yet to try the other food on the menu but I will soon. Everyone has different taste buds so one might like Jamaican food while one might not. I do recommend this place to give it a try though.

Been going to this place for a while now, needless to say its really good. The portions are generous and very tasty. The pepper steak is my go to, the meat is flavorful and tender but the jerk chicken is equally amazing. That, combined with the staff being really pleasant and courteous makes this place the place for a great hot meal. Go there, try it now.

3.5 star rating Location: Located across from the side of a 7⁄11 and parking is pretty limited. No washrooms. Spacious seating. Seats around 20 – 25 people. 4⁄5 cleanliness. Service: The young man who served us was kind and since we knew what we wanted checkout took less than a minute. Food was ready within 5 minutes(no line up). Food: I’ve had jerk chicken in a lot of different cities(toronto and new York to name a few). The rice was the general rice all jerk places serve. Little to no beans in the rice. Rice was hot. Chicken was very tender as it was falling off the bone very easily. Tasted like it was cooked in a slow cooker(I prefer grilled jerk chicken). The chicken itself was 3.5÷5 spicyness(5 being very spicy). The gravy is a sweet type of gravy which I didn’t like too much next time I would order the chicken without it. The coleslaw was mediocre. Overall my experience here was pretty standard. Definitely better than a fast food chain however I just didn’t prefer the slow cooker taste of the chicken. May be someone else’s cup of tea.

Jerk chicken is the most popular choice, sauce kinda like BBQ sauce and chicken meat string is well separated.

Let me start off by saying, I was not just raised by my parents, but also by an old school Jamaican woman by the name of Tenci that will always have a part of my heart. She was an amazing woman with a heart of gold that loved me as her own. That being said, Tenci made her specialty oxtail, goat, chicken feet, and jerk chicken a regular part of my diet. Thinking back on this I am quite amused about all the different foods I was raised on from Greek to Jamaican, to Italian, to Japanese, to Turkish, to happy, happy greens. Nonetheless, I digress. Yes, all of Kalypso’s meats are fall off the bone tender, but after three tries, the flavors just don’t hit me. I have tried the jerk chicken of course, the oxtail, and the curry goat. Each time I wanted to love it, as I was looking for a little taste from my childhood, but alas, nothing. The plantains are OK, but really, truly, the flavors are just not there. However, if this is your first time having Jamaican food, it is a good introduction. The food here is more Americanized, and isn’t nearly as spicy, or boldly flavored as authentic, old school Jamaican cooking. I guess I was just expecting too much. Overall, Kalypso is well priced, the service is nice — as everyone is quite friendly, and the food is well cooked. However, I would say — yes, they are authentic Jamaican dishes, but it is not authentic Jamaican cooking.

When I heard that there was another Jamaican option available I got pretty excited. I love everything about Jamaican Food, the spices and tenderness of the meats that just melt in your mouth keeps me coming back for more. Kalypso is located on Winspear Ave right near the corner of Main Street in the University District for UB South. The 7⁄11 convenience store is across the street. The restaurant is very small with a walk up window to order and pay. There is very minimum lighting so the place is pretty dark once you enter from the street. I usually have to let my eyes adjust for a minute or two. The first time I ordered take out I got the combo meal with Jerk Chicken and Oxtails. This came with a large portion of Jerk chicken that was nicely sauced and had a spicy sweet flavoring that was very tasty. The chicken was very tender and had a texture of rotisserie style chicken. The oxtails in my opinion were the star as it was so incredibly tender it literally fell of the bone. The meat was so tender and the flavor was so delicious I wished I had just order Oxtails so I didn’t have to share my stomach space. To top off this meal was a large portion size of rice and beans that may have felt a tad mushy, plantains and a very fresh coleslaw mix. I loved the food here and this will be my new take out spot as the portions are very big even for a small order.

I really enjoyed eating at this place. I ordered a small oxtail plate and got plenty of food. The oxtails were seasoned pretty well and tender. I will definitely be back to this spot.

Stopped here while staying in town for night to grab takeout and head to domewhere with beer. Walked in expecting a wait because I didnt call in takeout. Service was excellent and got my food quickly. Got oxtail, goat curry, and jerk chicken. True to other reviews slaw was a little dry but was almost a nice reprise from richness of meat. Loved the jerk chicken and oxtail, goat was good but paled in comparison. Dining area had 6 or so 4 person tables, larger than other reviews led me to believe, but not much ambiance, so Id stick to takeout.

I’ve been here a few times. Food is fantastic. Great authentic carribean flavors. I work in the area and normally take my lunch break at the same time they open. Wish they consistently opened on time because I’d definitely frequent them. Overall, the place is great. Tip: Jerk is spicy here. It’s not a mild or sweet jerk like some other places serve. You’ll most likely need a glass of water along with the meal. Happy Eating!

If you like jerk and curry, look no further. Here’s what we tried: — jerk chicken –curry chicken –chicken patty — fried plantains All of them were excellent. The jerk has a kick to it. Just enough to make your lips burn, but the sweet sauce has more than heat. It has flavor. The curry has a kick, too. Also, lots of flavor. Rich and semi-sweet, if you like Jamaican curry, try some curry chicken. The portions are also enormous. We ordered«large» entrees at around $ 10. There’s plenty left for lunch tomorrow. Do not worry about the tiny dining room. This is a takeout joint. Get your jerk and get home. It’ll all be good. I’ll be back… A lot.

I wish I knew of this place when I used to live around the area. It is a great find for anyone who is interested in great Caribbean food. I admit I am not the most versed person in Caribbean, most specifically Jamaican, cuisine, but this place seems as mom-and-pop-family-styled-cooking as it gets! I ordered the Jerk chicken large, which came with some cole slaw, rice and beans, and THREE chicken pieces. I believe the pieces were thighs, which in itself, is incredibly portions. But what really makes this meal incredible was the way it was slow-cooked that made the chicken super soft and fall off the bone. Slathered on was the jerk sauce, which the cashier warned me was very hot. I am accustomed to spicy foods so I did not mind, but those who are more sensitive might want to avoid. I never take home food as it never really tastes as good when you have to reheat it and I can usually finish my food in one sitting. This, however, was a challenge. I was literally stuffed and might have actually gotten an ulcer if I tried to force down one more bite. I gave up, my streak had to end sometime. Definite, definite, definite recommend!

What do you call it when the moon covers the sun while you eat at this place? A total e-kalypso of the sun. What do you call it when you use this place to sit and crack codes? Kalypsography. When your hair keeps going in your mouth while you eat here, what can you use to stop it? Hair Kalyps. What is a Latin Term that was invented by the chef here? Kalypso Facto! OK enough. What to get: Jerk Chicken with extra Jerk Sauce. So I am thinking of changing my performer name from Fox Elipsus to Fox Kalypso for two reasons.(1) I want to conquer the untapped Jamaican market. And I don’t mean sell records in Jamaica. Oh no. I mean I literally want to own a market on the corner of a main street in Kingston or Montego Bay. Hook me up pls. Kthxbye.(2) I looooooove this place. The food is phenom and that’s all you need to know baby. This is my favourite Jamaican place in town, and one of the best Jamaican places I have tried in the whole country. The patty is very good, the amazing fruit drinks from the fridge are remarkably awesome. The Curry Chicken is good, but probably not as good as the spicier one from Dr Bird’s across the street, and probably the one on Utica St. at the Soul Food place too. But their Jerk Chicken is the piece-de-resistance. It is fall-off-the-bone-delicious, it is very cheap, $ 7 for a small which is actually large… it is beyond amazing. The sauce is so hot and fiery that it will rock your world, but they’ll give that to you on the side if you want. They really know how to do on-the-bone chicken. It’s become a favourite place of mine despite the fact that I only recently discovered it. I am a massive fan of Kalypso and would recommend that everyone and their mother and their mother’s friends and extended family try it. And as for all the delicious drinks in their fridge, the Pineapple Guava is the really incredible one that you should go for. But all of them are very good. Straight in as one of my fave places in Buffalo to eat. Bravo.
